The center of England has always been one of the most important centers of power, culture and education. Let's follow in the footsteps of university life, the great poets and writers, the aristocracy and the landed gentry. And we enjoy the well-formed nature of the English landscape gardens. Even after decades as a tour guide, the middle of England is still worth a trip for me. Yours, Burkhard Hillerich

Arrival in London

From the present day straight into the 16th century. After your arrival at London Heathrow between 10:00 and 13:00, we will travel to Hampton Court, the residence of the scandalous King Henry VIII. It was not only his wives who had a hard time with the king. Lord Privy Seal Cardinal Wolsey, the previous owner of Hampton Court, also fell out of favor with Henry and lost the castle. In the Great Hall, the Tudor kitchen and the magnificent state rooms, we immerse ourselves in the English Middle Ages before strolling through the extensive gardens to the Great Vine. 120 km (A)
What is it like to live, teach and study in the English university city of Oxford? We find out, stroll through the old town and visit Christ Church, the largest of the colleges. If you want to know what English students think about tuition fees, reforms and Oxford's prospects in the next rowing regatta against Cambridge, you should ask here. North of Oxford, we explore Blenheim Palace. In the landscape gardens, we meet Lancelot "Capability" Brown for the first time, who saw "possibilities" for shaping almost every landscape. He proved it impressively more than 170 times in England. 35 km (F, A)
English picture-book landscapes, small towns, hidden gardens ─ that's Shakespeare Country. The garden at Hidcote Manor is a place to dream: yew trees and finely trimmed hedges divide the intimate grounds. A real insider tip with a view of the gentle Gloucestershire countryside! Next, and as a beautiful contrast, is the colorful flowering cottage garden of William Shakespeare's parents-in-law at Anne Hathaway Cottage. Inside the house, we get to know the world of a wealthy 16th century farming family. In Shakespeare's birthplace in nearby Stratford-upon-Avon, everything revolves around the English national poet. Finally, we stay at Kenilworth Castle in the age of Elizabeth I. Count Leicester did everything he could to impress the Queen here. He even had the recently reconstructed gardens laid out for his lady of the heart. How did the love story end? You'll find out on site! 175 km (F, A)
Owned by the Vernon family since the early 18th century, Hanbury Hall is now open for us to look around the building and beautifully landscaped gardens. George London was one of the most influential and celebrated landscape designers of his time and laid out the gardens at Hanbury Hall in 1705. There have been numerous changes over the centuries, but the garden was restored to its original Georgian state in the 1990s using the surviving original plans. Today, we can once again see the geometrically laid out paths and hedges, the trimmed boxwood bushes and the colorful flower beds that bloom all year round. A visit inside the estate is also worthwhile. The absolute highlight is the large mural by Sir James Thornhill in the staircase. The garden at Biddulph Grange, which we visit in the afternoon, is completely different. This is an absolute masterpiece of Victorian garden architecture and we take a look around together. We reach Chester in the evening. 286 km (F, A)
Our first visit of the day takes us to Chirk Castle, Edward I's only 14th century border fortress, which is still inhabited today. The original defensive structure has been repeatedly adapted to the needs of the times and on our tour of the house we hear about the special significance of the castle during the Wars of the Roses. Our second destination in Wales is the idyllic little town of Llangollen. We take a narrowboat along the canal and let the landscape pass us by at a leisurely pace. These boats were used to transport goods from around the middle of the 18th century and were traditionally pulled by horses. With the invention and spread of the railroad, this method of transporting goods became obsolete and today it is more of a journey into the past. I wonder what history the house and garden of the famous "Two Ladies of Llangollen", who lived here for 50 years, has in store for us? Your alternative: You don't want to see a garden today? No problem! Take a walk to Llangollen railroad station and travel back in time. Here you can discover old puffing trains and experience what train travel was like in the past. 50 km (F, A)
Chatsworth House has belonged to the Cavendish family, the Dukes of Devonshire, for 450 years. And it's not just any aristocratic residence that we visit: The state rooms full of paintings by Tintoretto, Canaletto, Rembrandt and van Dyck, the ceilings designed by Louis Laguerre, priceless tapestries on the walls. In the park of the estate, we stroll through every possible architectural design since the Baroque era: cascades and canals here, a landscape park by Capability Brown there, and finally a fountain by Joseph Paxton. A little further on, rose gardens and mazes, greenhouses and rock gardens, herb gardens and sensory gardens. In the gardens of Renishaw Hall, Sir Georg Sitwell realized his personal dream 100 years ago. Today, Renishaw is one of the most important Italian gardens in England. And so beautiful that parts of the film adaptation of Jane Austin's novel "Pride and Prejudice" were even shot here. 235 km (F, A)
Lincoln Cathedral is one of the most outstanding examples of English Gothic architecture. So outstanding that after the towers were completed in the 14th century, the church replaced the Pyramid of Cheops as the tallest building in the world. In Cambridge, we devote ourselves in detail to the elite university city. Of course, a visit to one of the famous colleges is a must. Why not ask the students here what they think of their chances in the next regatta against Oxford? 210 km (F, A)
Together you will travel to London Heathrow Airport, from where you will fly back home between 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm. 70 km (F)
