15-day Camino de Santiago hiking tour on the Camino portugués "Coastal Way" from Porto to Santiago de Compostela

All roads lead to Santiago de Compostela. The Portuguese Way is one of them.

The Portuguese Way of St. James begins in Porto and enchants above all with its lovely landscapes and great hospitality along the way. It leads through small, sleepy villages, past vineyards, meadows and fields, over medieval bridges and along secluded bays. You will hike over hills, through valleys and through forests in beautiful natural surroundings. Feel the proximity of the sea and the history of a millennia-old cultural landscape. The scallop shell became a symbol of the Way of St. James because in earlier times it was a typical find from the coasts of Galicia and was taken back home by pilgrims as proof that they had completed their pilgrimage.

  • Ideal for Camino beginners
  • Hiking on well-marked paths
  • Places with a long history and tradition
  • Good water and food supply en route
  • Individual - easy hiking at your own pace and without luggage
  • Reliable luggage transport from accommodation to accommodation
  • English-speaking tour assistance
  • Detailed road books, GPS tracks, hiking maps
  • 24-hour emergency service

Individual arrival Porto

Start of the Portuguese Way of St. James "Coastal Way"

Individual arrival in Porto. You have time to look around the streets of Portugal's second most important city after Lisbon. The famous port wine, or Vinho do Porto as it is called in Portuguese, is known all over the world. There are many wineries where you can taste the port wine, ideally accompanied by a fado, a Portuguese folk song with a melancholy character. The Douro River flows through the city of Porto - take the time to go on a short boat tour to see the city from the water.

Metro Aeroporto [E], Via do Aeroporto, Moreira, Porto 4470-558, Portugal

Don't leave Porto without visiting the Sé Cathedral, the Clérigos Tower, the Bolhao Market and the Crystal Palace Gardens. You will travel from Porto to Matosinhos, where you will start the stage on foot, discovering places such as Leça da Palmeira, Labruge, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim, your end of the stage. This beautiful town has a fortress: Cividade de Terrosso, which is more than 3000 years old and is the origin of the current town. In Póvoa you can visit the aqueduct, the Monumental Plaza de Toros (Monumental Praça de Touros), the fortress of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. You decide whether you walk 20 or 25 kilometers, which means you can take a transfer from Porto to Matosinhos and start your journey in this city or you can start your hike in Praia de Leça da Palmeira and walk the 20 km to Vila do Conde.

1 overnight stay in Vila do Conde

You leave Vila do Conde and continue along the Paseo Marítimo, reaching the chapel of San Andrés after a few kilometers. A wooden footbridge leads you to Aguçadoura. A little later you cross the North Coast Natural Park, where you can see different habitats: Pine forests, wetlands and the estuaries of the Cávado and Neiva rivers, as well as various bird species and more than 200 different plant species can be observed there. You walk on and after a while cross an iron bridge over the Cávado and arrive in the town of Esposende.

1 overnight stay in Esposende

From Esposende, you walk past the lighthouse and along the beach towards Marinhas. You continue along the coastal path and cross beaches and dunes. After a few kilometers you reach Amorosa beach and continue along wooden walkways and dune paths to Rodanho beach. You walk along a forest path that leads you to the small port of Cabedelo, which is already at the mouth of the Lima or Limia River. You cross the Eiffel Bridge and arrive in the town of Viana do Castelo, which has one of the most beautiful and best-preserved old towns in Portugal. In this beautiful city you can visit the Mother Church, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (Igreja da Nossa Senhora de Conceição), the Minho Castle, Santiago de la Barra Castle, the Viana do Castelo Cathedral, Santa Luzia Temple and the traditional goldsmith museum.

1 overnight stay in Viana do Castelo

Before you leave Viana do Castelo, you have the option of taking the cable car up Monte de Santa Luzia or visiting the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, from where you have a fantastic panoramic view of Viana. Today you hike on flat paths and close to the coast. On your way, you will cross many beaches with wooden walkways over dunes, well-trodden gravel paths and sea promenades. You will find military fortifications such as the fort of Santiago de Barra. You will leave the towns of Areosa, Carreço and Afife behind you and shortly afterwards you will reach Vila Praia de Áncora, where you can take a refreshing dip at a beach called Praia Vila Praia de Áncora. You leave the plain of Vila Praia de Áncora and reach Moledo beach via the coastal path. A little further on lies the charming town of Caminha, the last Portuguese town on this pilgrimage, at the mouth of the Miño River.

1 overnight stay in Caminha

A leisurely hiking day awaits you today with plenty of time to enjoy the tranquillity of the pilgrimage route and leave the Portuguese part of the pilgrimage route behind you. From now on, you will continue hiking the Way of St. James in Spain. Take the time to walk through the pine forest along the beach before crossing the Miño border river on the pilgrim ferry to A Pasaxe. Another dip in the Atlantic? The beaches facing the Atlantic are highly recommended here!

Take time to travel back in time to the Celtic settlement of Castro de Santa Tegra on a viewing platform 341m above sea level, before reaching the historic border town of A Guarda. In the heyday of the largest Castro in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, around 5,000 people lived there in the 1st century BC. BC, around 5,000 people lived there. The mystical petroglyphs are located just outside the Castro, as is the Archaeological Museum. The view - between two countries - is spectacular: the small fishing port of A Guarda, the overwhelming Atlantic Ocean, the border river Minho and the Portuguese coast on the horizon. In A Guarda, the Way of St. James takes you past the port and the town center, where you can visit the Plaza del Reloj and the church of Santa María. We recommend you try the delicious fresh fish and seafood specialties - the town is famous for its excellent langoustines!

1 overnight stay in A Guarda

Take time for a detour to the Celtic settlement of Santa Tegra before you leave A Guarda. The views are spectacular. Follow the Camino through the town center and towards the rugged coast. Via coastal paths, forest tracks and asphalt roads, you reach the small village on the beach of Oia, which is dominated by its 12th century monastery.

1 overnight stay in Oia

The day begins by crossing fields and a few villages along the coast before changing landscape and terrain and hiking through mountainous terrain. A final descent through the countryside and surrounding villages takes you via two old churches to the medieval center of Baiona.

1 overnight stay in Baiona

ABANICO tip: Treat yourself to an overnight stay in the beautiful Parador of Baiona (for an extra charge - on request)

As soon as you leave Baiona, the region becomes increasingly rural with villages and wooded areas. There is a short section along a busy road, after which you cycle through villages and along meadow paths to Vigo.

1 overnight stay in Vigo

Follow the main shopping street of Vigo and leave the city on a long road that connects a series of peaceful mountain villages with views over the city, the estuary and the port. Around the halfway point, you'll swap houses for trees before the steep descent towards Redondela.

1 overnight stay in Redondela

The trail first leads through wooded terrain before descending to Arcade, a riverside town famous for its oysters. Leave Arcade via the iconic bridge. Follow the old stone paths through a forest and take a scenic detour along the River Tomeza to reach Pontevedra. Explore the historic town center, its atmospheric squares and tapas bars.

1 overnight stay in Pontevedra

You hike through hilly, wooded landscapes to Caldas de Reis. The hot thermal springs there invite you to relax and unwind.

1 overnight stay in Caldas de Reis.

The destination of today's pilgrimage stage is Padrón, one of the highlights of the Portuguese Way of St. James. The route leads through villages and the magnificent Velga forest. According to legend, the ship carrying the body of St. James docked in Padrón and was then taken onwards in a cart pulled by oxen to the place in Santiago de Compostela, where the cathedral stands today. Located on the rivers Ulla and Sar, the small town is also famous for its "Pimientos de Padron", small green peppers that are served as tapas in all bars.

1 overnight stay in Padrón.

The last stage of the Portuguese Way of St. James takes you through the typically green and hilly Galicia to the destination of all pilgrims: Santiago de Compostela, a city that awaits you with all its historical splendor, diversity and dynamism and has rightly been declared a World Heritage Site. Narrow alleyways alternate with squares and centuries-old granite buildings, some of which date back to the Middle Ages.

Enter the old town through the gateway to the Way of St. James, the Porta de Camino. Your first visit will of course be to the cathedral which, according to legend, houses the remains of St. James. You can enter through the pilgrims' portal or from the magnificent baroque side, the Pórtico de la Gloria.

Santiago de Compostela is also where the pilgrim's certificate is issued, which officially documents the completion of the pilgrimage to Santiago - provided you have collected enough stamps in your pilgrim's passport.

Have a good time in the market hall. Not only fish and seafood, but also local fruit and vegetables are on offer here. The special feature: You can also eat the products directly! For dessert, there is of course nothing better than tarta Santiago - made from almond flour instead of wheat flour.

The streets of Santiago are full of pilgrims and music, the bagpipes of the Celtic tradition are omnipresent here, as is the tradition of the "tunas", student music groups that play in the streets and squares. Particularly beautiful: in the evening, these groups often gather under the arcades around the cathedral square.

1 overnight stay in Santiago de Compostela.

ABANICO tip: Treat yourself to an overnight stay in the historic Parador of Santiago de Compostela at the end of the trip (for an extra charge - on request)

End of the Way of St. James walking tour or possibility of individual extension.

We will be happy to organize a transfer to the airport or a bus ticket to the starting point of your pilgrimage in Porto.
