Tour program

Dag 1

Laat het los!

Your adventure in Costa Rica begins! You fly to San José, the capital. Your tour guide will be waiting for you at the airport. You will then go to your hotel, where you can recover from the flight after a small snack.

Meals
There will be a small snack in the hotel.

Accommodation
Studio Hotel
At the Studio Hotel, you will feel like you are in a gallery - the hotel is tastefully decorated with works by Costa Rican artists. Only the collection of the art museum in San José is larger than this collection. The hotel is conveniently located in the center of the Santa Ana district and offers you a great view of San José and the surrounding Valle Central.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 15 km.
The day begins after breakfast with a visit to the farmers' market in Zapote. Here you can sample the most delicious fruits. You will then visit the National Museum, where you will learn more about the history of Costa Rica. In the "witch town" of Escazú, in the El Encanto project, you will cook regional delicacies together with your hosts, garnished with fabulous stories and old legends. This is also the subject of a private mask factory, where you can look around to your heart's content.

Meals
Breakfast and lunch are included today.

Accommodation
FOLLOW-UP OVERNIGHT [subsequent overnight stay]
You spend the night in the same accommodation as the day before.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 45 km.
You drive to Irazú, the highest volcano in Costa Rica at 3,442 meters. Tropical mountain vegetation, a bizarre volcanic landscape and a fantastic view await you. From there, continue to Cartago to the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, a beautiful cathedral. A visit to the Lankester Gardens rounds off the day. The diverse botanical garden with its extensive orchid collection is perfect for a stroll. Take the Panamericana into the mountains to the Savegre Valley. Here you will find the largest variety of endemic plant species in the whole of Central America. Your lodge is located near the Cerro de la Muerte, the once infamous Death Mountain.

Meals
Breakfast and dinner are included today.

Accommodation
Trogon Lodge
Trogon Lodge at the foot of the 3,491-metre-high Cerro de la Muerte is located in an almost untouched valley. Countless birds live in the surrounding forests and the largest variety of endemic plant species in Central America can be found here. The rooms are relatively simple, but tastefully furnished. Lots of wood and fresh colors dominate the picture. As it can get quite cold here in the evenings, the hotel team will also put a hot water bottle in your bed. You can watch life in the nature park from the restaurant terrace.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 170 km. The highest point is 3,400 m above sea level.
It can get chilly in the mountains at night. However, your accommodation will provide you with radiant heaters and additional blankets, which you can obtain from reception.
The forest awakens early in the morning and you go stalking. You track down the shy quetzal, the Mayan and Aztec bird of the gods with its fluffy crest and long tail feathers. The fertile valley of the Savegre River is best known for its trout farming, which frolic in the ponds. Here we invite you to enjoy a delicious lunch, including freshly caught trout, of course. In the afternoon, you can explore the area around the lodge on your own or relax in your accommodation.

Meals
Breakfast and lunch are included today.

Accommodation
FOLLOW-UP OVERNIGHT [subsequent overnight stay]
You spend the night in the same accommodation as the day before.
You start on the Panamericana into the Pacific lowlands. You reach the sea at Dominical beach. Enjoy the sound of the waves or plunge into the water. There is still time to admire mysterious granite spheres from pre-Columbian times. They are among the most impressive archaeological relics in South America and are up to two meters in diameter and weigh 15 tons. You will reach your accommodation in the south of Costa Rica in the evening.

Meals
Breakfast and dinner are included in the price.

Accommodation
Esquinas Rainforest Lodge
Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is tucked away in the dense lowland rainforest of Piedras Blancas National Park. The lodge's private reserve and the adjacent national park are home to 300 bird species, which you can observe from your veranda. Coatis, monkeys, caimans and many other animals roam the beautifully landscaped garden. The complex includes nine huts with two rooms each, all colorfully furnished. The fabrics were woven by Guaymí and Boruca - this is how the lodge supports the local indigenous population.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 230 km.
Explore the incomparable flora and fauna on a hike in the Esquinas rainforest of the Piedras Blancas National Park. The "Rainforest of the Austrians" nature conservation project was founded here in 1991 to protect the Esquinas forest from deforestation. Here you will visit the La Gamba Biological Station. There you will find out what is being done to protect this sensitive ecosystem. The tropical station of the University of Vienna not only protects the rainforest from deforestation, but also serves as a teaching institution for students and research groups.

Catering
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price.

Accommodation
Esquinas Rainforest Lodge [overnight stay]
The Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is also your accommodation today.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 15 km.
You explore the Golfo Dulce. It's quite possible that dolphins will escort your boat. Enjoy the fantastic view of the jungle-covered rocky coast. Colorful coral fish and the occasional manta ray can usually be seen in the clear water. The mouth of the Rio Coto also offers excellent opportunities for wildlife watching. Thanks to the abundance of nutrients in the river delta, there is a great diversity of species here. You then travel along the Pacific coast through large oil palm plantations to the seaside resort of Manuel Antonio. After so many new impressions, your hotel offers relaxation.

Meals
Breakfast, a snack and dinner are included in the price today.

Accommodation
Parador Resort & Spa
The Parador Resort & Spa in Punta Quepos is located very close to the famous Manuel Antonio National Park. The location on a hill in the middle of the rainforest offers you a fantastic view of the bay of Manuel Antonio. The resort is only a 15-minute walk from Playa Biesanz, a small beach that seems like an insider tip, which you can reach via a jungle path. There are also regular shuttle buses to the equally beautiful main beach of Manuel Antonio. The eco-hotel participates in various programs for environmentally friendly tourism and ensures that recycling, water and energy conservation and the preservation of Costa Rica's rich natural resources are supported.

Notes
The route today is approx. 200 km.
We recommend that you wear light, water-resistant shoes, as the ground may be wet and stony when you get off the boat.
In Manuel Antonio National Park, jungle and paradisiacal sandy beaches have formed a unique symbiosis. You start the day with a hike in the species-rich national park: you may come across representatives of Costa Rica's four monkey species and coatis, iguanas or sloths. At the end of the day, you can enjoy the sea and sun on the white beach - and admire the wildlife, as monkeys and iguanas sometimes come right up to the beach here. Relax in the afternoon in your accommodation or on the nearby beach.

Catering
The included meals consist of breakfast.

Accommodation
FOLLOW-UP OVERNIGHT [subsequent overnight stay]
You spend the night in the same accommodation as the day before.

Notes
Manuel Antonio National Park is very popular in high season, especially at weekends. The local authorities have limited the number of visitors to the park. A visit is nevertheless recommended, as the chances of seeing animals, especially the rare sloths, are particularly high here. Don't forget your swimsuit: A swim at one of the national park's gorgeous beaches will win you over. To enable you to visit the national park, your guide will be with you at the park entrance early in the morning. Be prepared for an early departure from the hotel.

The Pacific is rough. Sometimes there are high swells with corresponding currents, which vary depending on the time of year. From January to March, the winds tend to be strong and the swell tends to be stronger.
A boat awaits you at the Río Tárcoles to explore the mangrove forest. You will encounter numerous water birds such as herons, ibises and water hens, as well as howler monkeys, spider monkeys and capuchin monkeys, iguanas and bats. Crocodiles often sunbathe on the sandbanks. After a rustic lunch in a simple restaurant by the river, you continue north into the green mountains of Monteverde. There you will experience an evening hike through the cloud forest at dusk and can observe the nocturnal animals.

Meals
Breakfast and lunch are included in the price today.

Accommodation
Arco Iris Lodge
Arco Iris Lodge is a small accommodation run with great charm by its owner. It is located in the middle of a tropical garden on the edge of the village of Santa Elena near the Monteverde nature reserve. The village center with stores, bank and restaurants is only a few minutes' walk away. When furnishing the lodge, great importance was attached to natural materials from the surrounding area in combination with local craftsmanship. You will spend the night in one of the twelve beautiful bungalows.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 210 km.
The Bello family runs an organic coffee farm. A family member will take you on a tour of the finca and tell you all about the cultivation and its history. After the theory comes the practice: deliciously fragrant coffee awaits you in the main house, accompanied by homemade traditional specialties. Then it's off to the Arenal volcano. It feeds hot springs everywhere in the area, including at your accommodation. Enjoy a warm bath and, weather permitting, the view of the Arenal.

Meals
Breakfast and typical local delicacies with the Bello family at lunchtime are included today.

Accommodation
Hotel Arenal Manoa
The Hotel Arenal Manoa is located at the foot of the Arenal volcano in a lush tropical garden. The grounds are very spacious and the rooms are extremely large. Weather permitting, you have a wonderful view of the volcano from the balcony of your room. After an eventful day, you can relax in the spacious pool or the hot springs or stroll through the beautiful gardens.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 110 km.
Today we drive to the foot of the volcano. It takes an hour and a half to hike to the viewpoint in the Arenal National Park. In good weather, you have a wonderful view, but the walk is also worthwhile in foggy weather. Afterwards, you will visit the Maleku, an indigenous community living nearby. Nowadays, there are only around 300 Maleku left; their customs and traditions are threatened with extinction. Your visit will help the village to preserve its culture. The Maleku will tell you about the difficulties of a traditional life in a modern world. At the evening farewell dinner, you and your fellow travelers can reflect on the many impressions and experiences.

Catering
Breakfast, lunch and the farewell dinner are included in the price. Lunch is traditionally cooked and served on a banana leaf. You eat with the Maleku.

Accommodation
FOLLOW-UP ACCOMMODATION [subsequent overnight stay]
You spend the night in the same accommodation as the day before.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 100 km.
We recommend that you wear good shoes on today's hike and use mosquito repellent during the day. If you don't want to do the whole hike, you can rest on a lava slope and wait for the others.

The activity of the Arenal is subject to natural fluctuations. At the moment, the Arenal is unusually quiet. As a result, lava can only be seen very rarely.

If the excursion to the volcano is not possible due to bad weather conditions, it will be postponed to the next day.
Before saying goodbye, we will make a stop in Sarchi, where you will experience the traditional production and painting of the ox carts that are famous in Costa Rica. You will then arrive at San José airport.

Meals
Breakfast is included today.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 130 km.
You return with a wealth of impressions in your luggage. Welcome home!
