Tilicho Lake And Thorong-La Pass Trek, a unique way to experience the incredible wonders of the Annapurna Region. Tilicho Lake is one of the most popular destinations of the Annapurna Circuit trek. The Lake nested at 4920 meters collecting the glacial waters of the entire northern slopes of Annapurna and Thorong Peak. One of the extensive glacier systems of the great barrier. The glaciers terminate in a vertical wall of ice 70 meters high that forms the west shore of the lake. Snowbound by a ridge between Khangsar Kang (7485m) and Nilgiri North (7061m). The next attraction is Thorong La Pass. A high mountain pass with an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 ft) in the laps of Damodar Himal, north of the Annapurna Himal. The highest point of your trek.

Overview:

The Tilicho Lake And Thorong-La Pass Trek starts with a long drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar. Besisahar has long been the starting point of various treks of the Annapurna Circuit. From Besisahar trekking across terraces farms with grand views of Himalchuli and Manaslu dominating the horizon reache village of Bahundanda. Next trekking along banks of the mighty Marsyangdi River following a series of steep stone paved stairs head towards Chamje. Then move on towards Bagarchhap, following the deep wilderness of bamboo, rhododendron, blue pine, spruce, hemlock, maple, and oak.


From Bagarchhap, traversing through the lush woodlands of Pines and Fir enter the beautiful Manang Valley and to the settlement of Chame. Next following the trails of steep narrow valley head to Upper Pisang. Along the way witness the Paungda Danda rock face, a dramatic curved rock face rising 1500-meter from the river. Along with Annapurna II to the south and Pisang Peak to the northeast.


Tilicho Base Camp

Then traversing across with the scenic views of high alpine landscapes and an endless range of mountains in the background head towards the bustling settlement of Manang. Situated in the broad valley of the Marsyangdi River. After an acclimatization day exploring wonders of Manang proceed to Khangsar village nestled on the banks of the Khangsar River. Then move on following screed slopes to a side valley towards the Tilicho Base Camp.


Following cliffs with sheer drops and moraine that cuts along the side of the mountain head towards Tilicho Lake. Along this section witness grand views of the mountain giants of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Khangsar, Muktinath peaks, and other endless peaks. At Tilicho soak in the energy and relax on the brown banks of the turquoise waters. The following day traversing across alpine vegetation and green meadows reach Yak Kharka a high alpine pastureland of the region. Then following the trails of high alpine grassland with patches of shrubs and dwarf junipers. Along the mountain giants of Gundang, Syagang, Thorung, and Khatungkan reach Thorung Phedi. The last village perched on the foothills of the high Thorong La pass.


Thorong La

The next day cross the high mountain pass of Thorong La at an elevation of 5416 meters. The highest point of your trek. From the top of the pass witness, grand views of the Annapurna, Mukut, and Mustang ranges with the Kali Gandaki valley seen far below. Following the downhill, path reach the ancient settlement of Muktinath.


Muktinath is one of Nepal’s most sacred pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath means the place of Nirvana and is home to the Muktinath temple. Here visit the ancient temple and witness grand views of the landscape, the green apple orchards, and snow-white peaks on the backdrops of brown, grey hills. Next head towards Jomsom following the river down south, through the wide, windswept, and barren valley. Jomsom is an important settlement of the region and provides basic to grandeur amenities. The following day catch a picturous flight to Pokhara. At Pokhara explore the attractions around and eventually head back to Kathmandu which marks the end of the Tilicho Lake And Thorong-La Pass Trek.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu (1400 meters/ 4593 feet)

Upon arrival at the Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport. A representative from the Alpine Club of Himalaya will assist you with your accommodation. Upon arriving at your hotel, rest for a while. In the evening join in for a special dinner program where you will experience excellent Nepalese cuisine.

Day 2

Drive to Besi Sahar (760 meters/ 2493 feet) 6 hours’ drive

After breakfast head on a long drive towards Besi Sahar along the Kathmandu-Pokhara highway. Besi Sahar is the headquarters of Lamjung and has long been the starting point for the Annapurna circuit trek. Upon reaching Besi Sahar explore the bustling settlement.

Day 3

Trek to Bahundanda (1270 meters/4167 feet) 5-6 hours

Following the dirt road at the northern end of the Besi Sahar start your trek. As you progress proceed on a rough rock staircase down to the Puwa Khola and join the road to Khudi at an elevation of 830 meters, the first Gurung village on the trek.

Next, cross the suspension bridge and rejoin the road on the other side of Khudi and continue to Bhulbule at 840 meters. Along this section witness, the grand views of Himalchuli and Manaslu dominate the horizon. Now leaving the road cross a suspension bridge over Marsyangdi Khola from where the trail travels up past an impressive 60-meter waterfall surrounded by tropical trees. As you progress the trail takes you across terraces and farms with views of Manaslu and Ngadi Chuli to the tiny settlement of Ngadi at 900 meters.

Crossing Sisneri Khola reaches a Tibetan settlement and porters stop. Traversing across hills and chasing river networks, reach a hot water spring in the region. A steep ascends through bamboo grooves, and you will finally reach Bahundanda.

Day 4

Trek to Chamje (1410 meters/4626 feet) 5-6 hours

Trekking across terrace farms and lush agriculture belts you will reach the village of Ghermu. The trail then crosses over to the west bank of Marsyangdi, continuing along you will pass the villages of Syanje and Srichaur.

From here, you will be traversing on steep stone paved stairs for about 150 m/ 500 ft. Then the trail leads you on a downhill section. As you descend witness views of Jagat at a distance perched on a small hill. Cross the suspension bridge over the rapids of the mighty Marsyangdi River and reach Jagat. A gradual climb along a rocky trail will eventually lead you to Chamje.

Day 5

Trek to Bagarchhap (2160 meters/7087 feet) 6 hours

Start your trek by crossing a suspension bridge across the mighty Marsyangdi River. As you progress you will come across a huge boulder, following the rocky trail and steep stone staircase reach the village of Sattale at an elevation of 1480 meters.

Next, traverse across the deep wilderness of bamboo and rhododendron on a descending route towards Tal Besi. From Tal Besi, the trail crests up a ridge top covered with a razor-wired fence. An army camp on the border of Manang district. Following the ridge section, you will enter a large plain area at the foot of a large waterfall. The village of Tal at an elevation of 1700 meters.

From Tal following the northern trail and crossing a suspension bridge, continue through the cliffy way right above the river to Dharapani at 1960 meters. Beyond Dharapani, the wide trail climbs gradually over a spur through a forest of blue pine, spruce, hemlock, maple, and oak to reach Bagarchhap. Bagarchhap is the first village on the trek with typical Tibetan architecture. Upon reaching the village head out to explore.

Day 6

Trek to Chame (2710 meters/8892 feet) – 5-6 hours

Today you will be entering the beautiful Manang Valley. Following the ascending route with might views of the Himalayan peaks start your trek. As you progress you will be traversing through lush woodlands of Pines and Fir and reach the settlement of Danaque also known as Syal Khola at an elevation of 2210 meters. From here head on a steep climb crisscrossing through rhododendron forest to reach the scruffy settlement of Timang at 2630 meters.

From Timang climbing through deep canopy cross villages of Thanchowk and Koto and eventually reach the large village of Chame.

Day 7

Trek to Upper Pisang (3310 meters/10860 feet) - 4-5 hours

Traversing on an ascending and descending route along the hill section follow the trail. As you progress you will be following the trails leading through a steep narrow valley. From here catch your first view of Paungda Danda rock face, a dramatic curved rock face rising 1500-meter from the river along with Annapurna II to the south and Pisang Peak to the northeast. Passing various sparsely populated settlements descend towards Manang valley. A brief walk and you will reach the village of Pisang. From Pisang, a steep ascent and you will eventually reach the village of Upper Pisang.

Day 8

Trek to Manang (3540 meters/11615 feet) 5 hours

Today continue through the drier upper part of the Manang district, cut off from the full effect of the monsoon by the Annapurna Range. People of this region herd the yaks & raise crops for part of the year.

You will have two options for the trek, a high route to Manang via the villages of Gyaru and Ngawal which takes around 8 to 9 hours, or a shorter main trail to Manang which goes through a low pass into the valley below Pisang peak and takes around 5 to 6 hours. Ask your guide for advice, both trail has scenic views of high alpine landscapes with an endless range of mountain in the background. Along the trail visit the Barge Monastery, the biggest monastery in the Manang District.

Day 9

Acclimatization at Manang Village

Today is your day of acclimatization, due to thin air at high altitude acclimatization is very important for your body. The settlement of Manang has various vantage points that you can choose from. Providing a perfect acclimatization excursion with views of Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna III (7555m), Gangapurna (7454m), Chulu East to the north, and huge glaciers tumbling down from Gangapurna. Explore the lake and settlement around and witness the majestic sights at dawn and dusk.

Day 10

Trek to Khangsar Village (3745 meters/12287 feet) 4 hours

Traversing across arid mountain country head towards the western gate and follow the downhill trails to the river network. Progressing on the trail witness grand views of Tilicho Peak and Annapurna range all along the way. Follow the narrow tracks and pass through small scenic settlements and the ancient Tore monastery. Enjoying the breathtaking views of the Khangsar River and the grand barrier reach Khangsar village.

Day 11

Trek to Tilicho Base Camp (4045 meters/13272 feet) 5 hours

From Khangsar continue on a large path and cross a monastery. The route ahead follows on a recently constructed path up towards a high ridge to the junction. From here there are two paths, one path maintains the altitude, traversing the slopes towards a place where the valley narrow downs. The other continues to ascend towards the line of the ridge.

The former path is much more difficult as it goes on a steep screed. The latter is the new path on which you will continue to reach a high crest and descend on switchbacks carved out through the screed slopes to a side valley. At its bottom is a brook. On the other side nestles Tilicho Base Camp.

Day 12

Trek to Tilicho Lake (4920 meters/16143 feet) to Base Camp. 6-7 hours

Today start early as the weather can deteriorate quickly at higher altitudes. Start by following a tough ascent. Next, the trail traverses onto a moraine and then cuts along the side of the mountain. Witness the splendid views of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Khangsar, Muktinath peaks, and other peaks all around. A strenuous climb will take you to Tilicho Lake.

Upon reaching, one of the highest lakes in the world, you will get to admire its tranquil beauty. Sometimes reflections of the surrounding peaks are seen on its turquoise waters, at other times the lake remains frozen. Take a break beside the calm waters and soak in the astounding views before heading back to the base camp.

Day 13

Trek to Yak Kharka (4020 meters/13190 feet) 5 hours

After breakfast head towards Yak Kharka. The trail leads out of the Marsyangdi valley and the abrupt change in surroundings can be noticed as the tree line disappears and is replaced with more alpine vegetation. The trek continues through the ruins of the old Khangsar village until you cross a log bridge over the river between Gumsang and Yak Kharka. The typical Himalayan village of Yak Kharka is an accolade to its name, where you can see yaks grazing around with Annapurna III on the backdrop. High alpine pastureland for Yaks. Day 14

Trek to Thorung Phedi (4540 meters/14896 feet) 3-4hours

Traverse across high alpine grassland with patches of shrubs and dwarf junipers. A brief uphill stretch and you will cross a suspension bridge which brings you to the village of Ledar. From here ascend further on small grey and brown hilltops along the towering cliffs of Mount Gundang, Mount Syagang, Thorung Peak, and Mount Khatungkan you will eventually reach Thorung Phedi, the last village perched on the foothills of the high Thorong La pass.

Day 15

Trek to Muktinath (3800 meters/ 12,467 feet) via Thorung La Pass. 7-8 hours.

Today start early before 3 am. As you will be crossing a high mountain pass it is very crucial to start early, the mountain weather may deteriorate as the day progresses. The trail to the summit is not technical but the altitude may be a problem so take frequent rest and stay hydrated.

Following the steep, long trails reach the summit. From the summit of the pass witness, an amazing panorama of the Annapurna, Mukut, and Mustang ranges with the Kali Gandaki valley is seen far below. After spending a brief time descent down with views of Dhaulagiri (8167m), Tukche Peak (6920m), and the brown-grey hills of the region. Traversing along this downhill section you will finally reach the village of Muktinath.

Muktinath is one of Nepal’s most sacred pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath means the place of Nirvana and is home to the Muktinath temple. The main pilgrimage normally takes place in September, but devotees, pilgrims, and saints visit the temple all around the year. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has 108 waterspouts around it taking a dip in this holy water is believed to wash away all your sins and assist you towards liberation. Another attraction nearby is the Jwala Mai Temple where a spring and an eternal flame fed by natural underground gas are present. Also witness grand views of the landscape, the green apple orchards, and snow white peaks on the backdrops of brown, grey hills.

Day 16

Trek to Jomsom (2760 meters/ 9055 feet) 4-5 hours.

From Muktinath, the trail descends towards the Kali Gandaki Valley, passing through the village of Jharkot, back-dropped by sensational views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri (7061m). The terrain around Jharkot is a yellow, barren, almost moonlike landscape, dotted with patches of green cultivation, where man-made canals cut across the fields, irrigating the crops and fruit trees.

From here a short steep descent leads you to Eklebhatti on the floor of the Kali Gandaki Valley. Next, following the river down south, through the wide, windswept, and barren valley you will reach the ancient settlement of Jomsom

Day 17

Fly to Pokhara (822 meters/ 2696 feet) 30 mins flight

Today you will take an early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara which takes around 30 minutes. On the flight witness grand views of the landscapes flying parallel to the mountain ranges. Upon reaching Pokhara stroll around the city or head on a guided tour. Later visit various pubs and restaurants in the region.

Day 18

Drive to Kathmandu 6-7 hours’ drive

After breakfast head towards Kathmandu valley following the winding roads of Prithvi Highway. Upon reaching Kathmandu head towards your accommodation. Later in the evening join in for a farewell dinner program that marks the end of your adventure.

Day 19

Final Departure

General Booking Conditions

Deposit Policy

For trips to Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, a photocopy of your passport and a 35% deposit of the total trip cost are required to confirm your booking.

This 35% deposit is non-refundable and is used to secure hotel reservations, transportation, trekking permits, and other advance arrangements.

The remaining balance must be paid upon arrival in Kathmandu, prior to the commencement of the tour.

Booking a Trip

* A 'trip' encompasses any itinerary or activities, including trekking, tours, expeditions, and other adventure programs that you purchase from us.

* The contract between Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. and the client is established only when we send a confirmation invoice or email to the customer.

* We reserve the right to adjust the prices of trips or tours before the booking is confirmed and the contract is finalized.

Alpine Club of Himalaya   Pvt. Ltd. will not be responsible for any warranties, collateral agreements, prior agreements, or descriptions of services or conditions beyond those explicitly stated in this agreement.

Cancellation Policy

­ 

If you need to cancel your booking with the Alpine Club of Himalaya, please provide us with written notice. We will confirm the receipt of your cancellation request. The amount you will be charged for canceling will depend on how close to the departure date you make your request:

A non-refundable cancellation fee of 35% of the total tour cost will apply.

•⁠  ⁠45 to 59 days before departure:

40% of the total tour cost will be charged.

•⁠  ⁠30 to 44 days before departure:

50% of the total tour cost will be charged.

•⁠  ⁠15 to 29 days before departure:

70% of the total tour cost will be charged.

•⁠  ⁠7 to 14 days before departure:

85% of the total tour cost will be charged.

•⁠  ⁠Less than 7 days before departure:

100% of the total tour cost will be charged.

Please note, no refunds will be provided if you voluntarily drop out once the trip has begun or if you do not use any pre-paid services such as accommodation, transportation, or meals.

Cancellation by Alpine Club Of Himalaya  Pvt. Ltd.

Alpine Club of Himalaya   Pvt. Ltd. reserves the right to cancel any trip, including those guaranteed to operate, before departure due to circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, flight cancellations, strikes, industrial action, wars, riots, illness, quarantine, government restrictions, adverse weather, or other unforeseen events. In such cases, we will provide a refund of the trip price only. If a guaranteed trip is canceled, you will have the option to either receive a full refund or choose an alternative trip of equal value.

Significant alterations do not include changes to airline carriers, flight schedules, or itineraries, as long as departure and arrival dates remain the same. Changes in cabin category or hotel accommodation will be within the same category.

Please be aware that Alpine Club of Himalaya   Pvt. Ltd. is not liable for any incidental expenses or consequential losses incurred by the client as a result of the booking. This includes costs such as visa fees, vaccinations, non-refundable flights or rail fares, parking fees, loss of earnings, or loss of enjoyment.

Additionally, no refunds will be given if you choose to withdraw from the trip after it has commenced, or if you do not utilize any pre-paid services, including accommodation, transportation, or meals.

Last-Minute Booking

­ 

Last-minute bookings for Nepal trips are accepted up to one day before departure. Full payment is required immediately. Last-minute bookings for Bhutan and Tibet trips are not accepted.

Trip Postponement

­ 

If you need to postpone your trip, notify us in writing with your new departure date. We will transfer your reservations to the new date at no additional cost, unless there are changes in rates for the new date.

Medical Conditions and Special Requirements

If you have any medical conditions or special requirements, please inform Alpine Club of Himalaya   Pvt. Ltd. at the time of booking. This includes physical disabilities or any other conditions that may affect your ability to travel. Failure to disclose such conditions may lead to refusal of travel and potential forfeiture of your deposit or even the full trip cost.

Certain trips may not be suitable for clients based on age, physical conditions (such as mobility issues or pregnancy), or mental health. It is your responsibility to verify suitability before booking. Alpine Club of Himalaya    Pvt. Ltd. will not provide special accommodations unless explicitly agreed upon in writing. We will make every effort to accommodate special requests, including dietary preferences, but such requests are not guaranteed and do not form part of the contractual agreement.

Medical facilities and standards vary by country, and Alpine Club of Himalaya    Pvt. Ltd. makes no representations or warranties regarding the quality of medical treatment available.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for all clients. It should cover personal injury, medical expenses, repatriation, helicopter rescue, and other relevant risks. We recommend purchasing insurance from a reputable provider in your country.

Passport and Visa

­ 

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Nepalese visas can be obtained at the Nepalese Consulate or on arrival at Kathmandu Airport. Visa costs are the client’s responsibility.

Flight Delays and Changes in Itinerary

­ 

Please be aware that mountain adventures are subject to unpredictable weather conditions. Bad weather in mountainous regions can lead to delays or cancellations of domestic flights. In such cases, Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. will arrange accommodation (guesthouse) and provide meals (lunch and breakfast) if requested by the client. However, clients are responsible for covering any additional expenses, including those for extra food and accommodation. If you opt for alternative arrangements, such as a helicopter flight to bypass delays, you will be responsible for all associated costs.

Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. is not liable for missed international flights. We will make every effort to assist with alternative arrangements where possible. Additionally, please note that changes to the itinerary may be necessary due to adverse weather conditions or other factors beyond our control during outdoor activities.

Risk and Liability

Adventure trips inherently involve risks, and clients accept responsibility for any personal injuries, damages, or additional expenses that may arise.

Cost Adjustments

Injuries and Evacuations

Our package costs do not include personal insurance. Alpine Club of Himalaya  is not liable for injuries or health issues during the trip. Clients should have their own insurance coverage.

Client Responsibilities

Our tour/trek leader has full authority during the trip. Any unlawful behavior may result in immediate removal from the tour, with no refund.

Publicity

We may use photos and videos of clients for promotional purposes on our website, but we respect privacy and will not disclose personal information.

Personal Belongings

While we take measures to ensure the safety of your belongings, Alpine Club of Himalaya   is not responsible for lost or damaged luggage or personal items during the trip.

Missed or Unused Services

No discounts or refunds will be provided for missed or unused services. This includes situations such as voluntary or involuntary departure from the tour due to illness, family emergencies, late arrivals, or early departures, whether voluntary or involuntary.
