Itinerary

Travel+Leisure Magazine calls the San Juan Islands "a place out of time." Bike pastoral roads and beside sparkling waters. Hike through ancient forest. Spend a half-day kayaking coastal waters with naturalist guides. Experience the very best of life on the Salish Sea. Top it off with award-winning lodging and fresh island cuisine. Conde Nast Traveler named Friday Harbor one of the Most Beautiful Towns in America. Fodor's Travel Guide trumpets, "You won't find a nicer place to ride than these islands in the Pacific Northwest's Puget Sound." At the end of your tour, hop aboard a chartered floatplane for a spectacular flight straight back to Seattle, included with your trip.

Tour program

Day 1

Meet in Seattle then shuttle to Anacortes where we begin riding on Fidalgo Island before catching the ferry to Lopez Island.

Meet us in Seattle for a complimentary van shuttle north to Anacortes, on Fidalgo Island. Ride across the forested southern end of Fidalgo Island and along the shores of Padilla Bay. Contemplate nature’s horizons against the skyline of industry as flocks of birds from the wildlife refuge circle a neighboring oil refinery. Our first ferry of the day takes us across the Salish Sea to Lopez Island. Ride to Spencer Spit State Park then Lopez Village and Fisherman Bay, the heart of Lopez. Spend two nights in pampered luxury at the historic Edenwild Boutique Inn. Their fresh, gourmet breakfasts and convenient location make it a top choice for an island getaway!

To Ferry: 13.7 miles · +337 ft / -338 ft

On Lopez Island: 15.8 miles · +797 ft / -807 ft

Day 2

Explore Lopez Island, the "cyclist's island".

Explore Lopez Island today. Lopez is the flattest, most rural, and least populated of the three main San Juan Islands. It’s also considered the ‘bicyclist’s island’ for its quiet roads, gentle terrain, spectacular marine vistas, and friendly residents who wave as you bicycle past. Ride clockwise around the island, starting with Spencer Spit State Park, then south to Watmough Bay (watch for seals!). Listen to the sound of the waves gently stirring the rocks on the shore at Agate Beach. This is a great day for views of the Olympic Mountains and looking ahead to some of the places you will explore this week.

Day 3

Take the ferry to Orcas Island, pedal to Moran State Park & to the summit of Mt. Constitution before taking another ferry to San Juan Island

Take a short Washington State Ferry cruise to Orcas Island, the largest and most mountainous of the San Juans. Shuttle (or pedal) to Cascade Lake at Moran State Park. Hike through the last remaining old-growth forest in the islands up to the summit of Mt. Constitution, the literal high-point of the San Juans! Prefer to ride? Challenge the switchbacks on the road to the top of “Mt. C” instead of hiking the trail. It’s one for the books! Either way, your reward at the top is a marvelous view of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges with the emerald archipelago flung out wide below. Instead of taking the ferry to San Juan Island in the afternoon, we hop on a 3-hour private water taxi and wildlife watching cruise (included). After the excursion, the boat will drop you off in Friday Harbor where the Friday Harbor Suites will be our home for the next three nights. Enjoy dinner on your own in Friday Harbor.

- Hike Mt. Constitution – Short and easy, or up to 4.3 mi · +2300 ft

- Cycle Mt. Constitution – 11.1 mi · +/- 2,001 ft

Day 4

Kayak the calm waters of the Salish Sea, explore Friday Harbor

Kayak the calm waters of Puget Sound and the Salish Sea today. Our sister company, San Juan Kayak Expeditions, will provide two-person kayaks, guides, and instruction. Spend today watching and learning about the abundant bird and marine life along the rocky, tree-lined shore of San Juan Island. Stop at charming and diminutive Turn Island for a picnic lunch and the opportunity for a nice 1-mile walk around the circumference of the island. After kayaking, we hop on our bikes for an easy 10-mile pedal around nearby Pear Point – a route so charming we do the prettiest part of the loop twice!

Day 5

Bicycle the shores of San Juan Island, explore the English Camp & Lime Kiln State Park

Bicycle the serene shores of San Juan Island today, enjoying open farmland and marine vistas from quiet country roads. Savor views of the Olympic Mountains across the Strait of Juan de Fuca on your way to Cattle Point Lighthouse. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mt. Rainier as well – 125 miles! Have lunch at Lime Kiln State Park, one of the best orca ('killer') whale watching spots in the country. Visit a national historic park that was once part of the “Pig War” between England and the United States and stop by historic Roche Harbor on your way back to Friday Harbor.

Day 6

Ride to American Camp, explore San Juan Island's longest beach before flying back to Seattle on a float plane!

Choose between visiting the Whale Museum (included) or joining us on an outing to English Camp this morning for a 2-mile hike to a viewpoint, or an easy stroll along the water. Afterward, have lunch on your own in Friday Harbor before we bypass the infamous Seattle gridlock – on a Friday afternoon, no less! – and return to the “big city” in style via a chartered float plane. Marvel at birds-eye views of Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountains, and Olympics as you soar over and past the traffic. The van will meet you in Seattle to take you to your flight or your hotel.

Accommodation

Our regional expertise, a constant re-evaluation of last year's inns, and a continuing search for the best experience ensure that our lodging is always among the finest the area has to offer. By limiting the number of guests on each trip, we expand our choices and are able to fit into some smaller, award-winning bed and breakfasts and country inns that wouldn't be able to accommodate a larger group.

Lodging is based upon two people sharing a room with a private bath. If you're traveling solo on any of our trips and you're open to sharing a room with another solo traveler of the same gender, you pay 50% of the single supplement fee up front. If we are able to assign you a roommate, that fee is refunded to you. You can guarantee a private room and bath if you pay the full Single Supplement Fee. Occasionally, a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed. Call our office to see if this is applicable to the trip and date you select.

Transport

You are welcome to ride in the van at any time - no explanation required. Some want a lift for just a few miles; others have ridden in the van for the entire trip. It's your vacation - you decide.

We use a fleet of specially ordered and customized 15-passenger vans. Most have a seven-liter V-10 engine, high rear axle ratio, and heavy-duty trailer towing package for efficiently moving a van full of people pulling a large trailer full of luggage and food. Each van also has heavy-duty professional bicycle racks on top of a custom-made, steelwork platform on the roof.

Insurance

Insurance is not included. Travel insurance is required for this tour. Please make sure you are adequately covered.

Flights

A seaplane flight from the San Juan Islands back to Seattle is included on the last day of the trip.

Meals

All meals except for one lunch and one dinner are included in the cost of your tour. On the days that you're on your own for a meal, there will be ample options within walking distance of our location.

At Bicycle Adventures we like to eat well. Dinner is eaten together at the best restaurant in the area each night. If we have to shuttle everyone a short distance to get to that special place, we do it. At most restaurants, you order what you want from the menu. Except for alcohol, everything is included, even appetizers, salad, soup, and dessert. Breakfast is typically provided by the hotels and inns that we stay at, but if there's a local spot known for great breakfast, we'll find it and you'll be treated to a nutritious meal to start your day. Lunch is provided at a state park or similar scenic setting midway during the day’s ride. Guests are always surprised at the variety and quality of lunches we prepare. Besides sandwich fixings and cold drinks, we offer fresh fruits and vegetables and hot lunches such as tortellini with pesto or veggie burritos. If you prefer a certain item of food or drink, just let your tour guide know and we will be sure to prepare just the right lunch to keep your energy up for the rest of the day.

During the day water, fruit juices, soft drinks, energy bars, fruit, and snacks are available from the van. A cold beer from our cooler waits at the end of the day, and you can relive the day’s highlights at our wine and cheese party before dinner.

Guide

Our guides are selected and trained for unparalleled personal service. Their backgrounds vary, but all share a love for the outdoors and, most importantly, a desire to help people make the most of their vacation. There are several ski instructors, a political analyst, an Emmy-winning journalist, and a college professor, among others. Almost all are college graduates. All are mature adults with expertise in leading our tours and extensive knowledge of the region we travel through. Almost all of last year's guides will be returning to lead our trips again, so you can count on having experienced leaders who love what they do.
