Itinerary
Island Peak Aggressive Climb: Standing at 6,189 meters, Island Peak is a smaller yet challenging trekking peak located in the Everest region of Nepal. The effort required is rewarded with breathtaking views of Ama Dablam and the south face of Lhotse. The peak is situated at the end of Chhukung Valley, which can be reached from Dingboche, though it requires careful planning due to limited acclimatization time.
This aggressive climb is designed for those with excellent physical fitness and prior mountaineering experience but who are constrained by time.
The adventure begins with a practical rock climbing course in Kathmandu, followed by an exhilarating mountain flight to Lukla. From there, you'll trek up the Dudh Kosi Valley, passing through Sherpa villages such as Phakding, Namche, Tengboche, and Dingboche, ultimately reaching Chhukung, where we establish our base camp. After a day of trekking from Chhukung, along the Lhotse Glacier and past the glacial waters of Imja Tsho, we reach the Base Camp and prepare for the ascent. Depending on weather conditions, scaling the peak may take an additional day or two. The climb culminates in reaching the summit (6,189 meters / 20,306 feet) after spending a night at the High Camp on the South West Ridge, offering magnificent views of the Khumbu region.
Important note:
Your safety is of paramount importance to us at the Alpine Club of Himalaya. We have the absolute authority to cancel the trip or change the itinerary, when deemed necessary or when we have reason to believe your safety is at stake. Weather conditions, the health condition of a group member, natural disasters, and such, can contribute to changes in the itinerary when traveling in remote mountainous regions. In these extreme situations, we kindly request that you offer your full co-operation to the trusted leader of the group appointed by the Alpine Club of Himalaya. However, we assure you that we will make every effort to keep to the above itinerary.
Tour program
Arrival KATHMANDU (1300m/4265ft)
ROCK CLIMBING COURSE or SIGHTSEEING
An expedition trip to Nepal requires more preparation than typical international travel. To ensure you are well-prepared, we offer a visit to Balaju, a natural rock climbing spot located a 3 km drive away. Here, you'll receive a climbing course covering essential skills such as using ropes, harnesses, ice axes, and crampons, even though there may be no snow. After the course, we return to Kathmandu for an overnight stay. If you feel confident and prefer not to take the course, you can opt for sightseeing around Kathmandu Valley instead. Overnight stay at the hotel. Meals provided: Breakfast.
Fly to LUKLA (2800m/9187ft); trek to PHAKDING (2610m/8563 ft) 2-3 hours trek; 200m descent, 50m ascent
Take an early morning flight from Kathmandu International Airport to Lukla Airport, then trek to Phakding. As we descend through fertile farmlands, we pass through Sherpa villages including Chheplung, Ghat, Sano, and Thulo Gumela. Along the way, we visit shrines and monasteries such as Drangdrak Gompa and Pema Choling Gompa, with stunning views of the sacred mountain Kumbila and the Kusum Kanguru peaks. Overnight stay at a guesthouse. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Trek to NAMCHE (3420m/11221ft) 5-6 hours/1000m ascent, 100m descent
On the way to Namche Bazaar, we pass through the hamlets of Zamphute and Tok Tok, where we can admire the dazzling Thamserku, which will accompany us throughout much of the trek. We continue through the picturesque Sherpa villages of Benkar, Chumoa, and Monjo, reaching Utche Choling Gompa, perched on a bluff overlooking the Dudhkoshi River. From here, we proceed to the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As we complete the first half of the journey to Namche Bazaar, we prepare for the steeper second half of the trek. After crossing the last village of Jorsale, a steep, stepped path takes us to a stunning high bridge over the Dudhkoshi River gorge, where it meets its tributary, the BhoteKoshi. We then begin the final uphill stretch, gradually ascending to Namche Bazaar. From here, we get our first glimpse of Mt. Everest peeking over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. After approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles), we reach Namche Bazaar. Overnight at a guest house. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Trek TENGBOCHE (3870m/12697ft) 4 hours; 350m descent, 750m ascent
From Namche, we take an easy trail that contours around the ridge from Chhorkung, leading us to a viewpoint with a stunning panorama of peaks including Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Everest. We then continue to Kyangjuma (3,550 meters), and a short walk from there brings us to the important trail junction at Sanasa (3,600 meters). From Sanasa, we take the trail to Tengboche, which descends gently towards the river.
The trail gradually drops to Lawichasa, where the thumb-like peak of Ama Dablam becomes visible above the trail. From Lawichasa, a narrow path branches north to Tashinga (3,380 meters). The trail then descends steep stone steps to Phunki Thenga (3,250 meters) and crosses a bridge. After the bridge, the trail climbs past water-powered prayer wheels and ascends steadily through a forest of tall, mature rhododendrons, where we might spot musk deer and Himalayan tahr.
Eventually, the path reaches a kani and a pair of chortens, marking the entrance to Tengboche village. This village is spread across a wide, grassy saddle below a crescent-shaped ridge covered with scrub pines and rhododendrons. The highlight of Tengboche is the renowned Tengboche Monastery. Overnight stay at a guesthouse. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Trek DINGBOCHE (4360m/14305ft) 3-5 hours; 70m descent, 580m ascent
From Tengboche, we follow a trail through a forest of conifers and rhododendrons, keeping an eye out for monal pheasants and musk deer. The path leads us to the village of Debuche, where we visit Debuche Gompa, known for its expressive old thangkas and murals painted on wooden panels. Debuche also features a small Buddhist nunnery on the eastern hillside.
The trail continues through dense forest to Milinggo and then descends steeply to a suspension bridge over the Imja Khola. After crossing the bridge, we climb the hillside opposite to a white stupa with Buddhist eyes. A short walk further reveals another stupa on an exposed bluff, mirroring the towering Ama Dablam at the end of the valley. East of the stupa, we find the footprint of Khumbu’s patron saint, Lama Sange Dorje.
We soon reach Pangboche village, home to the oldest monastery in Khumbu, Pangboche Gompa, founded by Lama Sange Dorje. Following the Imja Khola, the trail climbs towards the village of Shomare. Beyond Shomare, we cross the treeline and traverse an alpine terrain with patches of scrub, isolated pastures, and fields with yak grazing.
Passing through yak pastures and herdsmen’s stone huts at Orsho and Tsuro Wog, we turn right and descend to a point near the confluence of Imja Khola and Khumbu Khola. Finally, we climb a low ridge to reach the sprawling settlement of Dingboche, known for its cold and windy conditions with sub-zero temperatures even in summer. Overnight stay at a guest house. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Trek to CHHUKUNG (4730m/15519ft)
On this day, we traverse an epic trail along the Imja Khola to reach Chhukung, a small summer settlement nestled among ridges of moraine. Surrounded by mountains and glaciers on all sides, Chhukung is the perfect spot for our final preparations before the challenge ahead. Overnight stay at a guesthouse. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Climb to ISLAND PEAK BASE CAMP (4970m/16307ft) 3-4 hours
The trail from Chhukung follows a steep ascent, initially climbing south before turning east along the main valley line. It then meanders along or below the southern flank of the Lhotse Glacier moraine. A short, pleasant walk by a stream leads us to a notable landmark known as Big Rock. From here, the route to Amphu Lapcha veers southeast. Navigating through the moraines of the Imja and Lhotse glaciers, we arrive at a wide valley on the southwest side of Island Peak. We will overnight at the Island Peak Base Camp in a tented camp. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Climb to ISLAND PEAK HIGH CAMP (5600m/18372ft) 2-3 hours
The path ascends beyond base camp for several hundred meters before veering left up a steep hillside. Initially sandy, the trail soon transitions to grass and then becomes strewn with boulders. As we climb, the slope narrows, and the path enters a steep rock channel. We will spend the night at Island Peak High Camp. Overnight will be at a tented camp. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Climb to SUMMIT BASE CAMP (6189m/20305ft); Back to CHHUKUNG 8-10 hours
We begin the climb to the rocky gully early in the morning. While the climb is not overly difficult, it involves navigating several short rock steps before we reach the right side of the gully. The route then follows a ridgeline, leading to an exhilarating and exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier.
We will need to rope up for the glacier, which is crevassed but manageable. From there, we face a 100-meter (330-foot) snow and ice slope at a 40-45° angle, where the guides will secure a rope for our ascent. After scaling this slope, we will traverse three rope lengths along a sharp summit ridge to reach the top.
After taking in the stunning summit views, we will descend to Chhukung for an overnight stay. Accommodation will be at a guest house. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Trek to TENGBOCHE (3870m/12697ft) 5-6 hours
The trail descends gradually through scrub junipers and around mani stones, following the hillside. It passes numerous mani walls and traverses deep rhododendron forests. After crossing the Imja Khola, the path climbs past many carved mani stones to reach Pangboche. A visit to Pangboche Gompa, the oldest monastery in the Khumbu region, is highly recommended. From Pangboche, the trail descends into the valley and then continues through alpine meadows. It then gradually climbs to Tengboche, home to the largest monastery in the Khumbu. Overnight will be at a guesthouse. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
