Welcome to Mongolia! Do you like a winter tour? And what about the real experience where you will visit a Nomadic Reindeer herders in far northern Mongolian Taiga? Discover Altai team offers you a unique expedition! 

The reindeer people are located in the northernmost part of the Mongolia. Nowadays there are about fifty families who could keep their ancient way of living. Their lifestyle is very attractive and full of meaning.

You have an opportunity to stay at teepees and explore their ancient cultures. Be a part of the wildlife with the reindeer family where you feel the maximum close to the mother-nature.

During the tour, you have an opportunity to enjoy the stunning nature of Taiga. Hike up to the hill where you can enjoy the breathtaking surroundings. Also, visit the frozen Lake Khuvsgul, take a walk on crystal ice and get memorable photos.

Day 1

Meet in Ulaanbaatar

    Welcome to Ulaanbaatar. Ulaanbaatar is the capital city of Mongolia and here are living over half of the Mongolian population. Our Discover Altai team will meet you on your arrival in the city or any location that you are staying in. Today we will visit the main attractions of the city as Gandan Monastery and the Museum of National History. City tour continuous with a welcome dinner at the restaurant. 

Make sure that we are all set for the trip. 

You will be transferred to your hotel. Take a rest and be ready for the trip.

Day 2

Drive to Murun.

  In the morning we will drive to the Khuvsgul (Huwsgul) province. The province is famous for the majestic Khuvsgul lake and home for the last reindeer herders. It is one of the most popular destinations in Mongolia. Upon arrival in Murun, we check-in at the hotel. Dinner at the restaurant.

Day 3

Drive to Tsagaannuur town

   After having breakfast we will head to the Tsagaanuur town. It will be a long way along rough roads. For lunch, we will stop at Ulaan-Uul village. In the evening we will arrive at Tsagaannuur town. Stay at Haltra's wooden guest house. A traditional dinner from Bataa. 

Day 4

Arrive at Reindeer Tribe's winter place

Today we will arrive at the Reindeer tribe's winter place which is located in east Taiga, at the Rinchinlhumbe mountain. Meet the reindeer herder's family. The nomadic reindeers are one of the slowly disappearing ethnic groups with ancient traditions. Nowadays there are only about fifty families who could keep their traditional way of living for thousands of years. They migrate over four times a year and herd the reindeers. We will be guesting the reindeer family for the next three days and stay at their teepee's.

Day 5

Stay at reindeer's family

  The Reindeer people or well known as Tsaatan People have their own language and religion. Their belief and way of living are based on Shamanism. You have an opportunity to explore more about their ancient traditions and be a part of reindeer life. The east Taiga is famous for the stunning nature and picturesque landscape. Enjoy your day!

Day 6

Stay at reindeer's family

   Today we will climb to the Rinchinlhumbe mountain where you can enjoy breathtaking surrounded nature. It takes around four hours. We walk up to the mountain through the deep snow, so it is recommended to bring gaiters. Back to the tribe, you are always welcome to take pictures of reindeer people and have a memorable picture with reindeer. 

Day 7

Khuvsgul lake,

   Today we will drive to the lakeside.  After having breakfast say "goodbye" to the reindeer people and drive to Khuvsgul Lake. The lake is famous as the largest freshwater lake in Mongolia, and it holds 1% of the world's freshwater. With the 130 km long and 240 meters deep. Also known as "young sister of Baikal Lake". It totally freezes from the middle of January. Today we will stay by the lake and enjoy the stunning nature of Khuvsgul.

Day 8

Drive back to Murun

   Today we will drive back to Murun. But on the way, we will visit Mongolian biggest ship "Sukhbaatar".

It is the active biggest ship and with a capacity of 350 people. Upon arrival in Murun, you will be transferred to your hotel. Dinner at the local restaurant,

Day 9

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar

     After having breakfast we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar. You will be transferred to your hotel. Farewell dinner at the restaurant. End of the service. Thank you for coming!!!

There are a certain set of rules that must be followed. The guide is experienced and concerned about your safety as well as their own and will do their best to ensure no incidents. Please respect the guides and follow the guidelines they set for the tour. This is for everyone’s safety.


Be ready for varied weather and climate. The climate can quickly change from hot and sunny, to stormy and tumultuous. If there are any questions about the locations during any season or time, we are happy to answer these promptly.


The local nomads also have a large number of traditions that have been passed down through the generations that pertain to their living. Please respect these traditions and try not to hurt their feelings.


Cancellations Policy:


Discover Altai team has a very easy and reasonable cancellation policy. Please alert us to a cancellation as early as possible.


  • Cancellation more than a month before departure will result in payment of 300 USD reimbursements.
  • Cancellation less than a month before departure will result in payment of 600 USD reimbursements.
  • And the rest of the payment will be refunded

Our responsibilities: We must provide tours as they are booked. We will stick to a time and start date that won’t change and are as set when booking the tours. We will provide you with an experienced local team that knows the locations and logistics.


We are not responsible for: cancellation or delays on domestic flights. Your personal or medicinal needs are your responsibility and should be examined or taken care of before initiating a tour. Realize that any risks of injury facilitated by your own actions are not the responsibility of our team. If something is lost or misplaced, the team is not responsible.

We are well equipped with a sleeping bag and mattresses,

 but if you have a super warm sleeping bag it would be super!

Meals

Unfortunately during the trip, we can't cook. But, we will have a meal with the family. You have an opportunity to try the traditional meals. There is no cooking condition on this trip, somedays we will drive long and some days at the reindeer's family there is not a space for cooking equipment. But, also we can bring with us a box of products that we can make a small table and make some sandwiches. During the stay in the village and province, we will have a meal from the restaurant. Freshwater and snack are included.
