Itinerary

This Costa Rican adventure will take you from coast to coast across the country and bring you face to face with the country’s natural diversity and beauty. Sarapiqui’s whitewater rafting is adrenaline-pumping, Arenal’s volcano is breath-taking and the mysterious and vibrant Cloud Forest of Monteverde.

Tour program

Day 1

Journey to the Caribean Lowlands

Once you've touched down to San Jose, you'll be warmly welcomed by your driver. Leaving San Jose, you will continue your journey by private transportation to Sarapiqui, the drive is approximately 2 hours long.

Located at the junction of two Caribbean rivers in the lush northern lowlands of Costa Rica, Sarapiqui is the gateway to many thrilling adventure activities. On the banks of the Sarapiqui River and next to the Braulio Carrillo National Park, this place is a nature lover's paradise. The region is covered with thick lowland rainforest, home to many species of birds and is recognized as one of the richest areas in the country for bird watching.

Depending on the time of your arrival in Sarapiqui and having settled into your lodge the rest of the day is free to either relax or take an optional afternoon excursion. Although we're not bird watching fanatics, we highly recommend exploring the Tirimbina Reserve, where you can spot all types of exotic birdlife, as well as orchids, monkeys and sloths (always a favorite!). For a little local culture, there's the Museum of Indian Cultures too or for the sweet-toothed traveler, you can go on a tour of the artisanal Tirimbina chocolate plantation to see how the cacao fruit is transformed into delicious chocolate!

Meals - None.

Day 2

Adventure on the Sarapiqui River

Today you will immerse yourself in a day of excitement and adventure with the Sarapiqui River playing the leading role. After breakfast you will go to the small town of La Virgen de Sarapiqui, where you will start your whitewater rafting tour along the beautiful La Virgen de Sarapiquí section of the river with Class II-III river rapids. At the put-in point, you will have time to change into your rafting gear before receiving a comprehensive safety talk, as well as for instructions on the basics in paddling which you'll definitely need today!

As you launch your raft into the river accompanied by your guide let the paddling commence as you float your way through a beautiful part of the Sarapiqui River. Filled with exciting whitewater rapids as well as relaxing sections of the river, will give you plenty of time to appreciate and admire the wonderful natural scenery around you. Rafting down 13 kilometers of the river, you'll pass by the lush rainforest with its brightly colored plants, calls of wildlife and birdsong which make it a fascinating yet thrilling way to experience Sarapiqui's verdant nature. Keep an eye out for caiman, sloths, monkeys, toucans and many other bird species. The take-out point is located at the Chilamates operation center where changing rooms are available in case you need them to have a quick change before heading back to your lodge where the rest of the day is free to spend at leisure relaxing at your lodge or enjoying a different optional activity.

Please note that the minimum age for the rafting La Virgen section is 9 years old and the maximum age is 60 years old. If you are not so thrilled by white water rafting, we can also offer you a relaxing floating trip. Only please let us know upon booking what you prefer.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 3

Journey to the Arenal Volcano

Leaving Sarapiqui, you will continue your journey by shared transportation to Arenal, the drive is approximately 2 hours long.

As you approach the town of La Fortuna, one of the first things you'll see is the Arenal Volcano. Although it is no longer spewing out hot lava your first sighting of the sleeping giant will always be the most memorable as it rises up high above the surrounding landscape. Depending on the time of your arrival to the town of La Fortuna, situated at the foot of the Arenal Volcano and having settled in to your accommodation, the rest of the day is free to explore or relax.

If you're ready to start your Costa Rica adventure in La Fortuna, one of our favorite optional activities is the frog & cultural exchange night tour (not included). You will spend the evening at the home of Don Oscar and his family who own an amazing property with beautiful gardens and rainforest. An expert nature guide will take you out along the property trails as the sun goes down to help you spot nocturnal wildlife at this magical time of night. Here you will get eye to eye with Costa Rica's famous frogs and is a great introduction to the wildlife of this region. Afterward, you will sit down for a typical home-cooked meal prepared on a wood-burning stove.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 4

Chocolate Tour and La Fortuna Waterfall

Today, you will enjoy two of what we consider some of the most interesting activities to do near the Arenal Volcano: a nature hike to the La Fortuna Waterfall as well as a delicious Chocolate Tasting Tour. You will be picked up at your hotel and drive towards the La Fortuna Waterfall where you will enjoy a guided hike to the La Fortuna Waterfall. This waterfall is a must-see when you come to the Arenal Area. Its cascading 150-ft crystalline waters are refreshing and the exuberant nature that surrounds this secluded canyon will astound. The base of the waterfall offers a perfect place to swim, relax, and take photos. Not only will the waterfall take your breath away, but also the hike back up, but it is well worth it!

Then continue for just a bit to enjoy the Rainforest Chocolate Tour, discovering the ancient secrets of chocolate: from its discovery and use in tropical America, to the processing of the product we know and enjoy nowadays. Considered a gift of the Gods, the cacao tree was very important to the ancient culture, it was not only used as a ceremonial drink, but its cocoa seeds were also used as currency because of its economic value in many regions of Mesoamerica, including Costa Rica. The tour brings history, culture, traditions and flavor together as you participate in the production process, from the harvesting of the fruit, drying and grinding of the seed, to the tasting of a high-quality organic chocolate.

Arriving back in the town of La Fortuna, the rest of the afternoon is free for you to relax or take an optional excursion. After a morning hike, we recommend taking a soak at the hot springs warmed by the heart of the Arenal Volcano. Many of the area's best hot springs are situated just at the foot of the Arenal Volcano which means that you can enjoy looking up at the mighty volcano while soaking in the warm waters rich in minerals while listening to the calls of the rainforest around youthis is truly a heavenly experience!

Tip: Don't forget to bring a bathing suit and towel if you would like to go for a short swim at the waterfall, as well as sunscreen, insect repellent, hat and camera.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 5

Lake Crossing to Monteverde

Leaving Arenal and La Fortuna behind, you will continue your journey by shared transportation across the lovely Lake Arenal before heading up into the lush, green cloud forest high of Monteverde. The total duration of this adventure connection is approximately 4 hours long and this is the fastest way to get from Arenal up into the Cloud Forest of Monteverde. The first leg of the connection takes you by transfer to Lake Arenal where you will board a boat that will take you across to the other side of the lake, during which you may have the opportunity to see the Arenal Volcano as well as some beautiful tropical birds. After the lake crossing, you will continue the journey by land in shared transportation for the last 38 kilometer drive of scenic dirt roads into the mountains, to the cloud forests of Monteverde. Upon arrival, you will be taken to your hotel.

Located on the Pacific highlands, the small town of Santa Elena sits as the gateway to the beautiful Monteverde and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. The area is known as one of the most outstanding wildlife refuges in the New World Tropics. Santa Elena is slightly reminiscent of a tropical Switzerland, with its charming wooden houses and alpine climate. This environment creates a constant game of drizzle and warm sunshine; a combination that makes Monteverde the most famous cloud forest in the world. It is called a cloud forest rather than a rain forest because of its altitude: as the high-altitude forest juts up through the clouds.

Depending on the time of your arrival in Santa Elena and having settled into your accommodation, the rest of the day is free to explore or relax. If you're feeling a little hungry or like cheese, then the Monteverde Cheese Factory is where you should head to. Opened in 1953 by the area's original Quaker settlers, you can learn about the history of Quakers in Costa Rica and how they make their incredibly tasty cheese, especially the Monte Rico which is famous throughout Costa Rica. Alternatively, you may wish to get your wildlife adventure started and there are several places in Monteverde to get your wildlife fix ranging from the Butterfly Garden and the Serpentarium to the Frog Pond and Bat Jungle.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 6

Explore the Canopy by Hanging Bridges and Zip-line in Monteverde

Today you will enjoy the beauties of the Monteverde Cloud forest and the surrounding area, on a combination of one of the most famous activities in Costa Rica; the so-called Hanging Bridges Hike or Skywalk and Canopy Zip-Line or Sky trek. The Sky Walk and Trek are combined with a ride on the Sky Tram (gondola) that provides for an unforgettable full-day excursion.

You will be picked up at your hotel and taken halfway between the town of Santa Elena and the Santa Elena Reserve, where a bilingual nature guide will accompany you on your excursion to give you a local insight to the surrounding flora and fauna. First, a ride in an open-air gondola, the Sky Tram, will take you up into the Monteverde Cloud Forest to the highest observation point in the area, also called the Continental Divide, where you will have some time to admire the view of the Nicoya Gulf, the mountain range and the Cloud Forest.

From this area, your nature guide will take you on a hike to explore the treetops walking on suspended bridges that span across canyons and through the canopy bringing you face to face with the upper level of the Cloud Forest. There are five bridges in total, the longest of which spans some 984 ft. with the trail extending for slightly over 1.5 miles (2.5 km), making this tour extremely feasible for anyone as the climb is not strenuous or muddy, and the trails are well maintained and generally very flat. Your local guide will accompany you throughout the whole experience and will be on hand to explain the surrounding flora and fauna. Until recently, little was known about life in the tops of tropical forests, as it was nearly impossible to get so high but thanks to the suspension bridges and platforms that you'll be exploring today, biologists can now find out more and more about this unique environment.

Following your easy-going and relaxing journey through the treetops of the canopy you'll start the adrenaline pumping part of your Cloud Forest adventure. With 1.7 miles of cable slung between towering trees, stretching across canyons and between the treetops, you'll set off on a heart-pounding zip-line, whizzing through this amazing environment. You'll zip your way from lofty platform to lofty platform as you work your way down to the starting point at ground level. The Sky Trek is similar to other canopy tours in Costa Rica but incorporates some significant differences, such as being on a much larger scale, with more zip lines and platforms to explore. Its construction is of the highest quality, utilizing protective and secure materials, including metal platforms and mesh-covered steel rails, which prevent falling or sliding. The zip line is simply there to add a little perspective, so you can tell how high you are or how fast you're going and it adds a nice background to the photographs as well. Although you'll be moving too fast to see much of the wildlife on this part of the tour, it's a thrill worth experiencing and without a doubt one of the most thrilling zip lines in the country!

Meals - Breakfast, Lunch.

Note: For safety reasons you need to wear closed shoes and long pants during this tour! The minimum age for this tour is 8 years old. Maximum weight 125Kg (275lbs).

Day 7

When a major change is made the Client will have the choice of accepting the change of arrangements, purchasing any other available tour, or canceling the tour and obtaining a full refund **PROVIDED THAT THE MAJOR CHANGE IS NOT BECAUSE OF FORCE MAJEURE** (please see the following definition of Force Major).

Force Majeure

Force majeure is defined as and includes: natural disasters (earth quakes, floods etc), an act of war, threat of war, riots, civil unrest, industrial dispute, terrorist activities, nuclear disaster, fire or adverse weather conditions, technical or maintenance problems with transport, changes imposed by cancellation or rescheduling of flights by an airline, the alteration of airline or aircraft type, or other similar events beyond the control of Class Adventure Travel.

Limitation of liability

Class Adventure Travel, its employees and stakeholders do not own or operate any entity which provides services for its tours. All transportation, accommodation, restaurants, tour services etc, are independent and are purchased by Class Adventure Travel for the tour package. Class Adventure Travel acts only in the capacity of an agent upon the legal conditions that, while exercising every possible precaution, it is not responsible for injury, sickness, damage, loss, additional expenses, accidental delay, or other irregularities which may be caused either through willful or negligent acts or omissions made by the companies or individuals providing or engaged in transportation, accommodation or other services related to the accomplishment of the tour, or through illness, disease or force majeure (as defined in the above section) such as natural disasters, social upheavals or other causes. In the event of force majeure, illness or disease Class Adventure Travel is not liable for any charges in the event of cancellation of the tour or part of the tour, downgrading, or a change (beyond their control) to the departure time or date of a tour, flight or other form of transport. Class Adventure Travel is not responsible for any damage to property, injury, death or financial or physical loss or illness during the tour. Class Adventure Travel advices all passengers to ensure that they are fully insured for their trip and to be aware that travel in South America can be dangerous. The Client assumes all risks associated with participating in their tour.

Surcharges

Class Adventure Travel reserves the right to increase the tour cost to take into account the following items: government actions, currency, transportation costs – including the cost of fuel, overflying charges, airport charges and increases in scheduled air fares. If the surcharge results in an increase of more than 10% of the tour cost, the Client may cancel the booking within seven days of receiving notification of the surcharge by Class Adventure Travel and obtain a full refund. No surcharge will be imposed within 60 days of departure.

Special Requests

Special requests made by the Client, such as adjacent or connecting rooms, bedding requests, smoking rooms and special dietary requirements should be advised at time of booking. Please note that though Class Adventure Travel will make every effort to organize any special requests they cannot be guaranteed. Please note that if single accommodation is requested, a single supplement fee will be included in the quote. Single rooms may not always be available.

Changes to booking after initial deposit

Charges may apply to modifications requested by the client after the payment of the initial deposit. This does not include additional services or days in addition to those already paid for in the initial deposit. All changes that disrupt the chronological order of the booking and/or currently booked hotels or services may result in a supplemental booking fee.

Client Refunds

Any refunds due to the Client will be made in the same manner in which they were paid, and are subject to any service fees, transaction fees, or any other charges that the relevant bank, or other 3rd party service provider, may apply.

Passports, Visas and Vaccinations

It is the responsibility of the Client to be in possession of a valid passport (which must be valid for at least six months from their arrival date in each of the countries they are traveling to), all necessary visas, inoculations and preventive medicines as may be required for the duration of the tour. Information about these matters is given in good faith in our FAQ section, but without responsibility on the part of Class Adventure Travel. Government Policy towards acquiring a Visa changes and inoculations can change at any time for citizens of different countries all around the globe; it is the client’s obligation to request information in writing for any Visa needed for entry into any country in South America. Payment of any fees due upon entering or leaving a county is the sole responsibility of the client and is not included in the package price. Departure tax and airport taxes are not included in the price of the package and are the sole responsibility of the client (though some airport taxes may be included in the price of the airline ticket). Class Adventure Travel is not responsible for any incidental expenses or consequential losses that the Client may have incurred as a result of the booking such as visas, vaccinations, non-refundable flights or rail, non refundable car parking or other fees, loss of earnings, or loss of enjoyment, etc.

Age, Fitness and Participation

All Clients are expected to ensure themselves that they are fit and able to complete the itinerary of their choosing prior to booking. Persons over 60 years of age are advised to obtain medical evidence of fitness to travel on their chosen itinerary. No unaccompanied minors (those under 18 years of age) can be accepted on tours operated by Class Adventure Travel .Class Adventure Travel reserves the absolute right to decline a booking at their discretion. Clients agree to accept the authority and decisions of Class Adventure Travel employees, tour leaders and agents whilst on the tour with Class Adventure Travel . If in the opinion of such person the health or conduct of a Client before or after departure appears likely to endanger the safety, comfort or progress of a tour, the Client may be excluded from all or part of the tour. During travel in South America the Client may experience extreme conditions such as high altitude, high temperatures or low temperatures. It is the responsibility of the Client to ensure that they are prepared for these eventualities and Class Adventure Travel accepts no responsibility for illness, damage to possessions or health or inability to complete all or part of the tour due to such factors.

Baggage restrictions and responsibility

The Client is entirely responsible for their own baggage at all times and must ensure that they comply with all size and weight restrictions imposed by airlines for both domestic and international flights, as well as on any other mode of transportation related to the tour. It is the Client’s responsibility to ensure that all luggage and personal effects are fully insured and Class Adventure Travel accepts no responsibility for loss of, damage to, or any costs or inconveniences as a result of the loss of, or damage to baggage or personal effects.

Local laws

All participants in tours operated by Class Adventure Travelare expected to obey the laws and regulations of the countries visited and any failure to do so will relieve Class Adventure Travel of any and all obligations that they may otherwise have under these booking conditions.

Illness or disability

Anyone with suffering from illness or disability or undergoing treatment for any physical or medical condition must declare the true nature of such condition at the time of booking and make arrangements for the provision of any medication or other treatment which may be required during the tour. Failure to make such disclosure will constitute a breach of these booking conditions and result in such persons being excluded from the tour in which case all monies paid will be forfeit. If the chosen holiday includes a cruise or excursion or transfer by boat of any sort the Client must make it known at the time of booking if he/she is unable to swim. This will not prevent the Client from participating in the tour but will enable Class Adventure Travel to take additional precautions for the Client’s safety at such times as may be appropriate. Anyone with dietary restrictions, food allergies or otherwise, assumes full responsibility for ensuring that their own needs and requirements are met. Whilst Class Adventure Travel will make every effort to ensure that client in catered for wherever possible, it is not always possible to provide alternative meals or ensure that food is prepared entirely free of certain elements (such as nuts). In the event of any illness or loss of enjoyment resulting from such issues Class Adventure Travel assumes no responsibility.

If the Client has a Complaint

If the Client has a complaint about any of the tour elements or services he/she must bring it to the attention of the tour leader or other representative of Class Adventure Travel at the time so that they can make their best effort to rectify the situation. It is only if/when Class Adventure Travel is made aware of any problems that there will be the opportunity to make any necessary changes to rectify the problem. Failure to complain on the spot will result in the Client’s ability to claim compensation from Class Adventure Travel being nullified, or at least reduced. Should the problem remain unsolved, a complaint must be submitted in writing to Class Adventure Travel within 28 days of the completion of the travel.

Flight Bookings

Class Adventure Travel will make its best effort to ensure that all flight prices are correct at the time that they are quoted. Airlines reserve the right to amend or withdraw fares without prior notice. Once a deposit is paid on an airfare, it guarantees that a booking is being held for you, but it DOES NOT GUARANTEE the fare. The fare can only be guaranteed when the flight booking has been paid for in full and a ticket has been issued. Flight bookings cannot be transferred. The flight times given by Class Adventure Travel are for general guidance only and are subject to change. Up-to-date flight times will be shown on the tickets. The Client must check the tickets very carefully immediately upon receipt of the latest timings. Class Adventure Travel will attempt to inform the Client as soon as possible in the event of any flight alteration. Details of airlines are also subject to change. Such alterations do not constitute a significant change to the travel arrangements and will therefore not be entitled to cancellation without paying the normal charges as a result. Class Adventure Travel cannot be held responsible for any delay to your flight whether this delay is caused by adverse weather conditions, the action of air traffic controllers, airport authorities or (local) governments, the rescheduling of flight times by the airline, mechanical breakdown, strike, industrial action or any other reason

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is highly advisable for all Clients traveling on a tour organized by Class Adventure Travel. Clients together with their personal property including baggage are at all times solely at their own risk. Clients are wholly responsible for arranging their own insurance. A suitable insurance policy should provide adequate cover for medical expenses arising through illness or accident prior to or during travel and loss of travel monies through cancellation or curtailment of the holiday for insurable reasons. Clients should ensure that there are no exclusion clauses limiting protection for the type of activities in their tour. Clients should satisfy themselves that any travel insurance arranged is what they require and should arrange supplementary insurance if need be. Travel insurance is able to protect you against any losses due to any changes that may occur prior to your travels, as well as providing security for the duration of your travels. Class Adventure Travel can provide travel insurance through ITravelInsured. However, Class Adventure Travel acts only as an agent for this company and accepts no responsibility for any issues that arise between the client and the company (ITravelInsured). All dealings with and claims made must be directed at and discussed with ITravelInsured and not with Class Adventure Travel.
