Details of your cycle tour in South Tyrol

Before you start your cycle tour, you will have plenty of time to explore the beautiful town of Bressanone/Brixen and sample the first Italian and South Tyrolean delicacies. On day 2, you first take the train to Brennero/Brenner and then cycle through the picturesque Isarco/Eisacktal valley, where castles and palaces line the route.

The route to Bolzano takes you along an old railroad line and through countless vineyards, before Sigmundskron Castle is on the program the next day and the lakes of South Tyrol invite you to enjoy a swim. On the stage to Merano, you first follow the Eisack and then the Etsch on first-class cycle paths. For the finale, you cycle through the Vinschgau Valley - accompanied by King Ortler, the highest mountain in South Tyrol!

Highlights of the seven-day tour in South Tyrol

Swimming in the lakes of South Tyrol: In addition to the imposing mountain scenery, the crystal-clear lakes are not to be missed. Don't hesitate to take a dip - Lake Kaltern is considered the warmest bathing lake in the Alps. Surrounded by forests and marshland, the Monticolo/Montiggl lakes are located in a nature reserve, but are also ideal for swimming.

Fragrant orchards: Wine and fruit growing play an important role in South Tyrol - the many hours of sunshine provide an ideal climate for this. Above all, you will encounter apple trees on the tour, as there are over 7,000 orchards in the region. But don't forget to taste the peaches, apricots, plums and wine!

Mediterranean lifestyle in Merano/Meran: Just a stroll through the old town will make you feel the magic of this city. Stroll through Merano's Laubengasse, where you can buy souvenirs for those at home in the stores and enjoy a fine cappuccino and cooling gelato in the cafés. The botanical gardens of Trautmannsdorff Castle are also worth a detour, as are the Postbrücke bridge and the thermal baths.

Tour program

Day 1

Arrival to Brixen

Handover of travel documents and rental bikes, if applicable. A first walk through the charming old town is recommended.

In the morning, take the train to the Brenner Pass. From the small border town of Brenner, take the well-developed cycle path, mostly along the Eisack river, first to the small village of Gossensass and then straight to the once mighty Fugger town of Sterzing. Here, you can take a longer break before continuing downhill on the cycle path to the beautiful Reifenstein Castle and Franzensfeste with its famous fortress. From there, it's only a few kilometers back to Brixen.

The old railway line from Brixen to Bozen has been adapted into a fantastic cycle path. The route is steadily slightly downhill and leads first through the medieval town of Klausen with the Säben monastery. The valley becomes narrower and narrower and the vineyards of Italy's northernmost wine-growing region come closer. Bozen is reached far too quickly! You shouldn't miss a walk through the Laubengasse to the famous "Ötzi Museum" and a glass of wine at Waltherplatz.

On the cycle path past Sigmundskron Castle with the Messner Mountain Museum to Eppan and then on to Lake Kaltern with fantastic views over the valley. Wine and apples in abundance line the path. Back to Bolzano via the Montiggler Lakes nature reserve with wonderful swimming opportunities.

Visit the Princely Castle, stroll along the Tappeinerweg and enjoy a creamy gelato on the spa promenade.

Take the Vinschgau railway towards the Reschenpass. First you go from Mals to Glurns with its completely preserved medieval city wall. Over the Montani ruins through Schlanders down to Merano. Castles and palaces are located on or high above the route. You can enjoy views of the impressive Ortler massif and the Stilfserjoch while cycling. The route can be shortened individually.
