Off we go to Naples

Packed your sunscreen? Then you're ready to go. You fly to Naples and can toast to an eventful day with a glass of wine or a cappuccino before dinner. (A)

День 2

A day in Bella Napoli!

Let's first get an overview of Naples. Where better to do this than in the elegant Vomero district with the Castel St. Elmo, from where we enjoy a magnificent view over the metropolis of Campania and the Gulf of Naples. Then we visit the monastery and cloister of Santa Chiara, the resting place of the kings of Naples and Sicily, and learn a lot about everyday life in antiquity in the National Archaeological Museum in front of the most important finds from the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Take a look at the Galleria Umberto and the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore on your own. (F)

From Naples via Pompeii to Mercato San Severino

Let's go to Vesuvius! We take a close look at the mountain that brings blessings and calamities. After a short, steep climb to the summit, we look forward to the magnificent panorama ─ the entire Gulf of Naples lies at our feet! Did the inhabitants of Pompeii have any idea in the summer of 79 what disaster Vesuvius would bring them? Probably not, otherwise they would have fled the volcano's eruption in droves. The ash preserved the Roman provincial town for thousands of years and so today we take a walk into the everyday life of the Pompeians, along the forum, through thermal baths, theaters and residential buildings. We then drive to Mercato San Severino to our next hotel. 70 km (F, A)

On the Amalfitana

Let's get our cameras ready! Because as we drive along perhaps the most beautiful coastline in Italy, we can expect breathtaking views that we should capture for posterity. Passing Positano and Amalfi, we reach Ravello, an oasis of peace. Here we first visit the cathedral, but then retreat to the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. It's hard to decide which is more enchanting here: the lush plants or the views of the Gulf of Salerno? 50 km (F, A)

From Mercato San Severino via Paestum to Capri

A relaxing day: probably the greatest evidence of Greek culture in southern Italy awaits us in Paestum. Three mighty temples rise up in the sacred district, which are among the best evidence of the Greek era in ancient Italy. We find the museum in the middle of the excavation site. Here we see the magnificent temple metopes and the unique image of the "Diver". In the late afternoon, we say goodbye to the mainland and make ourselves comfortable on the ferry to Capri. 130 km (F, A)

On Capri

We drive down to Capri. Our walk to Villa Jovis takes around an hour and a half. Tiberius retreated here in the last years of his life. Even then, the island's seclusion and climate were appreciated. The Augustus Gardens offer fantastic views of the Faraglioni cliffs and the serpentine Via Krupp, which winds its way down to the sea. As we walk through Capri Town, we are amazed at how quiet and idyllic the island suddenly becomes when the daily streams of tourists head back to the mainland in the afternoon. You will also benefit from this in the evening, when you can look for a place to eat in Capri or Anacapri and enjoy the flair of the island. (F)

From Capri to Ischia

The Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe chose one of the most beautiful places on the island for his retreat. His Villa San Michele is enthroned high up in Anacapri and offers almost endless views of the sea. We also pay a visit to the small church of San Michele before taking the chairlift up to Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island. You guessed it, there are fantastic panoramas here too. It's a good thing that digital cameras no longer require film! After a refreshing visit up there, we take the chairlift back down. In the afternoon, we leave Capri and cross over to the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia. (F, A)

On Ischia

Unlike Capri, Ischia is of volcanic origin, which is one reason for its lush vegetation. We discover the most beautiful corners and places on the island on a tour around the extinct volcano Monte Epomeo: Forio, Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola and the capital of the island: Ischia-Porto. The monumental Aragonese castle in Ischia-Ponte, which we view from the outside, is connected to the town by a bridge. 25 km (F, A)

Little sister Procida

Procida, just four square kilometers in size, is Ischia's little sister. And yet there is a lot to discover here: We visit the Terra Murata, a former prison, and enjoy the fantastic panoramic view over the island and the sea. We then stroll along the harbor through the main town. In the afternoon, we return to Ischia and take a look at the fishing port and marina. You will also have enough time to look around on your own. Perhaps you simply want to enjoy the tranquil life with a glass of wine or relax in one of the hotel's pools? (F, A)

Our Italian days are over! We cross over to Naples, drive to the airport and fly home. Those who extend their trip for a few more days on Ischia can count themselves lucky. We wish you a good rest! (F)

The 4-star thermal hotel is centrally located in Ischia town, within walking distance of the harbor and the Via Roma promenade.
