План подорожі

Decades in the making – and yet to be finished – the Olympic Discovery Trail follows an old logging railway along the northern portion of the Olympic Peninsula. We take advantage of over 60 miles of the completed trail, keeping you off the sections where it follows busy roads. Pedal with the snowcapped Olympic Mountain Range to one side and the Strait of Juan de Fuca on the other. And no logging trucks! We circumnavigate the peninsula, beginning at Lake Quinault before heading north and then east around the peninsula, stopping at Kalaloch and Ruby Beach on the coast, the Hoh Rainforest, Lake Crescent, and Port Angeles before we hit the high point of the tour (and the peninsula) at Hurricane Ridge. We also get off our bikes to take a closer look at things, hiking in ancient forests, on beaches, and through sub-alpine meadows. Enjoy waterfront lodging every night and stay at two different National Park lodges (3 nights). Finish the week with a coastal bike ride and beautiful ferry ride straight into the heart of the Seattle waterfront!

Програма туру

День 1

Meet in Seattle then shuttle to the Quinault River basin, hike along a lake, explore Kalaloch & Ruby beaches.

To the Northwest Coast natives, Quinault means "river with a lake in the middle." It is the name of the land, the lake, and the tribe who lives here. The Quinault River basin famously holds six different species of record-sized trees. It's a bit of a drive (~2.5hrs) from Seattle, but don't worry, you will be craning your neck to catch a glimpse of the tops of the “Big Trees” before you get out of the van! Explore the network of trails along the lake this afternoon to see some of the largest western red cedar, Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and Douglas fir trees on the planet. Sample a dozen or more varieties of native berries depending on the season. From Quinault we drive another half-hour to Kalaloch on the Pacific Coast.

Kalaloch means “a good place to land" and we think you will agree. In sharp contrast to the soaring inland forests, forbidding-looking tangles of gnarled spruce and wind-whipped shore pines line the coastal beaches. Take a walk on the beach, keeping an eye out for scurrying shore birds, surf-riding scoters, playful otters and soaring bald eagles. In the evening, the garnet-tinged sands and offshore haystacks of Ruby Beach form a photo-perfect sunset backdrop. Spend the night overlooking the beach at Kalaloch National Park Lodge.

День 2

Explore the Hoh Rainforest - one of the quietest places on earth!

Spend a whole afternoon in the most famous rainforest in the park! Cited as being one of the quietest places on earth, Hoh means "whitewater," an apt description for this boulder-strewn, braided ribbon of a river flowing from Blue Glacier on Mt Olympus – the lowest glacier in the lower-48 states. Hike the Hall of Mosses Nature Trail in the morning before continuing up the Hoh River Trail in the afternoon. With luck, we will track down an elk herd along the way. Regardless, colonnades of spruce stretch toward the sky, big leaf maples spread out over fern meadows, and lichens and mosses run wall to wall and floor to ceiling. There is more biomass here per acre than anywhere else on the planet! In this valley, you will inevitably run out of different ways to describe "green". After the hike we shuttle (~1hr45min) to stay at another National Park Lodge for the next two nights. Lake Crescent Lodge sits amid towering old growth forest on the shores of an enormous gem of a lake. Woodsy trails through this rare and magnificent eco-system are accessible right outside your door to wander and explore.

- Hike up to about 8 miles, 100ft gain, 800-900ft elev.

День 3

Begin cycling east on the Olympic Discovery Trail, Stay at historic Lake Crescent Lodge

Today, after a short van shuttle, we begin cycling east on the Olympic Discovery Trail. Pedal the Sol Duc River valley through dense 2nd and 3rd-growth forests that surround the National Park on our way to glacial-carved Lake Crescent. The clear, cold waters (you can see up to 60 feet down!) and stunning depth (over 600 feet!) give the lake its blue-green color. Two species of trout found nowhere else in the world also call it home. Stay another night at Lake Crescent National Park Lodge. You can enjoy more time on the lake, brace yourself for an invigorating swim, or immerse yourself in more ancient forest on a great short hike from the lodge to a wondrous waterfall. Stop to ponder which is more spectacular here: is it the waterfalls, the lake, or the old-growth forests they reside within? Whatever you decide, we think you will agree that it’s a special combination when you put them all together!

Ride the Olympic Discovery Trail to Port Angeles

Rejoin the Olympic Discovery Trail where we left off yesterday. Savor a relaxing ride along the shores of sparkling Lake Crescent in the morning before having lunch on your own at a lakeside resort. Shuttle (or ride alongside the roadside) to the recently unfettered Elwha River – the site of the largest ongoing dam removal project in the world. Learn more about this important habitat restoration program before continuing on toward Port Angeles (pop. 20,000), the biggest city as well as the busiest port on the peninsula. Ride out Ediz Hook for beautiful views of the Straight of Juan de Fuca and Port Angeles with the snow-capped Olympic Mountains as a backdrop. Stay on the waterfront at the Red Lion Hotel, our lodging for the next two nights. Lunch and dinner are on your own today.

День 5

Ascend Hurricane Ridge, the highest point in the Olympic Range!

Today we ascend to Hurricane Ridge, the literal high point of the tour. As its name suggests, wind truly shapes this land, gusting to over 70 mph, with snows 30-35 feet deep in the winter. Go for a hike through alpine meadows and tree islands, dodging black-tailed deer and Olympic marmots – an endemic and adorable species of giant ground squirrel. Revel in a panorama of sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Vancouver Island. Enjoy lunch with a view near the Visitor’s Center (currently being rebuilt after a fire in 2023). In the afternoon, we return to Port Angeles for a celebratory dinner at our favorite local restaurant.

Special Note: We are saddened to have to announce that, as of 2024, the National Park Service no longer allows commercial tour participants to cycle on the road to Hurricane Ridge. We apologize that we are unable to continue this amazing cycling opportunity. It is our hope that they will change their minds on this matter, but currently those are the restrictions.

- Hiking: variable, about 4 mi with 1000 ft of gain at an elevation of 5400 ft.

День 6

Ride the Discovery Trail to the small town of Sequim in the rain-shadow on the peninsula

Ride the Discovery Trail right out the front door of our hotel this morning. Continue east through forests dotted with farmlands to the small town of Sequim (pronounced “skwim”), the rain-shadow retirement capital of the peninsula and home to Western Washington’s only native cactus – the brittle prickly pear. While not quite a “desert,” less than 30 inches of rain fall here per year, compared to nearly 200 inches just 40 miles away at the Hoh! The area is renowned for its lavender festivals as well as the world’s first interactive elk-crossing. The female herd-leaders have been fitted with collars which set-off warning signals on the highway when they are in the area. Continue to Blyn for lunch before we load up bikes. Shuttle to Bainbridge Island where we catch a ferry into downtown Seattle – the perfect end to a perfect week!

Розміщення / проживання

Our regional expertise, a constant re-evaluation of last year's inns, and a continuing search for the best experience ensure that our lodging is always among the finest the area has to offer. By limiting the number of guests on each trip, we expand our choices and are able to fit into some smaller, award-winning bed and breakfasts and country inns that wouldn't be able to accommodate a larger group.

Lodging is based upon two people sharing a room with a private bath. If you're traveling solo on any of our trips and you're open to sharing a room with another solo traveler of the same gender, you pay 50% of the single supplement fee up front. If we are able to assign you a roommate, that fee is refunded to you. You can guarantee a private room and bath if you pay the full Single Supplement Fee. Occasionally, a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed. Call our office to see if this is applicable to the trip and date you select.

Транспорт

You are welcome to ride in the van at any time - no explanation required. Some want a lift for just a few miles; others have ridden in the van for the entire trip. It's your vacation - you decide.

We use a fleet of specially ordered and customized 15-passenger vans. Most have a seven-liter V-10 engine, high rear axle ratio, and heavy-duty trailer towing package for efficiently moving a van full of people pulling a large trailer full of luggage and food. Each van also has heavy-duty professional bicycle racks on top of a custom-made, steelwork platform on the roof.

Харчування

All meals except for one lunch and one dinner are included in the cost of your tour. On the days that you're on your own for a meal, there will be ample options within walking distance of our location.

At Bicycle Adventures we like to eat well. Dinner is eaten together at the best restaurant in the area each night. If we have to shuttle everyone a short distance to get to that special place, we do it. At most restaurants, you order what you want from the menu. Except for alcohol, everything is included, even appetizers, salad, soup, and dessert. Breakfast is typically provided by the hotels and inns that we stay at, but if there's a local spot known for great breakfast, we'll find it and you'll be treated to a nutritious meal to start off your day. Lunch is provided at a state park or similar scenic setting midway during the day’s ride. Guests are always surprised at the variety and quality of lunches we prepare. Besides sandwich fixings and cold drinks, we offer fresh fruits and vegetables and hot lunches such as tortellini with pesto or veggie burritos. If you prefer a certain item of food or drink, just let your tour guide know and we will be sure to prepare just the right lunch to keep your energy up for the rest of the day.

During the day water, fruit juices, soft drinks, energy bars, fruit, and snacks are available from the van. A cold beer from our cooler waits at the end of the day, and you can relive the day’s highlights at our wine and cheese party before dinner.
