Welcome to Auckland City

Personal meet and greet, and private transfer to your accommodation

On arrival you will be met by one of our team and driven to your Auckland accommodation.

Auckland, New Zealand’s self-proclaimed ‘City of Sails’ is the country’s largest metro area. Resting between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea, this urban paradise has something for everyone. Surrounded by native bush, rainforests and an abundance of beaches, Auckland is a playground for both the city savvy and those with an eye for adventure. Explore the central museums and galleries on foot, or take a drive through one of over 800 regional National Parks to see deserted beaches, waterfalls and native forest.

Immerse yourself in the activities and attractions on offer in Auckland 'City of Sails'

Perched on the edge of a large natural harbour, New Zealand's ‘City of Sails’ offers the best of both worlds. Sandy beaches, native bush and lush rainforests give way to a vibrant urban culture, humming with life. 

Harbour Dinner Cruise with Explore

This unique on-water dining experience is not to be missed while you're in Auckland. Enjoy smooth sailing on the Waitemata Harbour - then watch this photogenic city come alive with twinkling lights. Enjoy your meal as you sail around the beautiful Auckland Harbour taking in the view as the sun slowly sets. You'll be treated to canapés and a drink as you set off towards Westhaven Marina. Choose between dining in the downstairs cabin or on deck to take in the iconic sights of the Auckland Harbour. To finish the evening off, savour your dessert course as you leisurely sail back to Auckland’s vibrant Viaduct Harbour.

Day 3

Head South through lush Waikato farmland. Stop at Hobbiton for a behind-the-scenes movie experience before continuing on to geothermal Rotorua

Auckland to Matamata and Hobbiton

Head southbound on State Highway one through the lush farmland and dairy pastures of the Waikato region. The Bombay Hills mark the outer boundary of the greater Auckland area and its here you turn inland towards Matamata. This is the real Middle Earth, and its here you can see many locations used in the filming of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit - as well as visiting the actual set of Hobbiton.

Hobbiton Movie Set Tour

In the heart of New Zealand, you can step into the lush pastures of the Shire with a guided tour of Hobbiton, as featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies. Hobbiton is located just outside of Matamata - in the heart the lush Waikato farming region. Here you can visit such iconic Hobbit locations as Hobbit Holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the Mill and the Party Tree with a guide sharing behind-the-scenes tales and insight into the making of the films.

Matamata to Rotorua

Just south of Matamata is the township of Tirau, home to the largest tin sheep and sheepdog, but it also offers a surprising number of bric a brac, art, craft and antique stores if you feel like browsing.

Arriving into the City of Rotorua the regions geothermal activity becomes evident as you see steam rising from the roadside and surrounding hills.

Day 4

Spend a full day in Rotorua discovering volcanic attractions and the local Maori culture

Explore Rotorua

Peppered with natural hot springs, boiling mud pools and steaming geysers, Rotorua sits within one of the worlds most active volcanic regions. Geothermal landmarks aside, this city of sulphur has a rich indigenous history.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland ( Suggested activity ) 

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a spectacular showcase of New Zealand’s most colourful and unique geothermal elements sculpted by thousands of years of volcanic activity. You are introduced to a uniquely different natural landscape – the key to what you see lies below the surface – one of the most extensive geothermal systems in New Zealand, extending over 18-sq. km. Enjoy viewing unique volcanic features as you walk at your own pace along well-defined tracks. Relax in the first-class Visitor Centre, home to the Gift Shop and Café facilities. Visit the Mud Pool, the largest in New Zealand, it was originally the site of a large mud volcano which was destroyed through erosion in the 1920s. See the history and beauty of the Lady Knox Geyser at 10:15 am every day. Lady Knox Geyser provides a unique opportunity to see an eruption to heights of 10 to 20 metres.

Te Pō - Indigenous Evening Experience

Enjoy an in depth experience of the customs and traditions of Māori, with a traditional pōwhiri (Māori welcoming ceremony), a warrior's challenge and a full kapa haka (Māori performing arts) concert. Feeding guests is regarded by Māori as an honour and a sign of a tribe's mana (standing), so a sumptuous banquet is provided during the evening. This banquet combines contemporary cuisine with a traditional hangi (earth-cooked oven meal). Following dessert, you will be transported to enjoy the spectacular lighting of the Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley. Guests can wander around the illuminated natural attractions, including our world famous Pohutu geyser, while enjoying more Māori-inspired delicacies and a hot drink.

Day 5

See Lake Taupo, the Desert Road and Kapiti Coastline today as you make your way down the country to New Zealand's capital city, Wellington

Rotorua to Wellington

The drive from Rotorua to Wellington takes you via the township of Taupo home to New Zealand’s largest lake. Following the lakeshore South you’ll pass Turani and then ascend the central plateau onto the high country Rangipo Desert. Skirting the edge of Tongariro National Park, you’ll reach the military town of Waiouru before descending through rich farmland and the rural towns of Taihape And Mangaweka. Follow the coast through Paraparaumu, Paekakariki and Plimmerton to arrive at your destination, Wellington.

Day 6

Today you'll cross the Cook Strait on the Interislander Ferry. Cruise through the spectacular Marlborough Sounds before arriving in Picton

Interislander ferry Wellington to Picton

The 92 km journey between Wellington and Picton takes around 3 hours and has been described as 'one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world'. Leaving Wellington Harbour you pass many interesting points such as Pencarrow Head on top of which is New Zealand's oldest lighthouse (1859). Red Rocks is home to a seal colony and Oterangi Bay is the site which recorded the country's highest ever wind speed of 268 kph (167 mph).

From the Cook Strait spectacular views of the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island can be enjoyed and dolphins and many sea birds are often seen. Around one hour of the cruise takes you through the Marlborough Sounds and this region of bush covered mountains, small islands, crystal clear waters and secluded bays offer remarkable photographic opportunities. The final leg of your cruise travels through Queen Charlotte Sound before coming to an end in the picturesque town of Picton.

Day 7

Drive on the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway to Christchurch today

Picton to Christchurch

From Picton you cross the dry hills of the Marlborough ranges as you head towards one of the most spectacular coastlines of the South Island, the Kaikoura Coast. The road hugs the shore for around 50 kilometres and offers many chances to view native wildlife such as seabirds and New Zealand fur seals. To the east is the turquoise waters of the South Pacific Ocean and to the west the towering Kaikoura Ranges. Kaikoura Township is a bustling place with many cafes, restaurants and shops - but the main reason for visiting here is the wildlife. Whale Watch Kaikoura is New Zealand's only marine-based whale watching company offering visitors an exciting up-close encounter with the Giant Sperm Whale at all times of the year. Depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales.

The drive from Kaikoura to Christchurch continues to follow the spectacular coastline before heading inland and through North Canterbury's major wine region, the Waipara Valley to arrive into Christchurch City.

Discover the delights of Christchurch, New Zealand’s ‘Garden City’

Explore Christchurch City

Following the 2011 earthquake that razed its centre and much of the outlying suburbs, Christchurch is well into a billion-dollar makeover. In the middle of the Canterbury Plains, bordering the pacific ocean, New Zealand’s newest city is an ideal gateway to exploring the middle of the South.

Christchurch Gondola, Punting, Tram & Gardens Tour

Experience 4 of Christchurch's iconic attractions throughout your stay in New Zealand. The Christchurch Pass gives you the Gondola, Tram, Punting on the Avon River and the Caterpillar Botanic Gardens Tour. Each attraction does not have to be visited on the same day that your pass is purchased, which offers great flexibility. Take in the breathtaking views of the Christchurch Cityscape, Canterbury Plains, Southern Alps and the dramatic hills of the Banks Peninsula when you ride the Gondola. Your Christchurch Pass includes return transport from the City centre to the Gondola. The historic Tram is a delightful way to explore the changing face of Christchurch city. Punting on the Avon River will allow you to admire Christchurch's beautiful Botanic Gardens as you glide in a handcrafted flat bottomed boat, propelled by a skilled punter in traditional Edwardian attire. If cancelled 44-21 days prior to travel: 55% of Total Tour Cost non-refundable

If cancelled 20-8 days prior to travel: 70% of Total Tour Cost non-refundable

If cancelled 7 days or less prior to travel: 100% of Total Tour Cost forfeited 

T&Cs: 

A non-refundable deposit of 20% of the tour cost or NZ$250 per person, whichever is greater, is required to secure your booking. Any prepaid items (such as flights) will also need to be paid at time of booking.

For tours booked to depart within 45 days full payment is required at the time of booking.

Cancellation up to 45 days prior to departure:

If you cancel your tour at any time prior to 45 days before your tour commencement the deposit portion is non-refundable as are any additional fees collected.

Cancellation 45 - 21 days prior your tour commencement date:

If you cancel your tour 60-21 days prior to your tour commencement date a cancellation fee of 35% of the total tour reservation value plus any cancellation fees applied by other providers such as accommodation, car rental and other activities. Plus the above deposit values

Cancellation 20 - 8 days prior your tour commencement date:

If you cancel your tour 20-8 days prior to your tour commencement date the cancellation fee will be 70% of the total tour reservation value, plus any cancellation fees applied by third-party providers that are subject to cancellation terms.

Cancellation 7 days or less prior your tour commencement date:

If you cancel your tour 7 days or less prior to your tour commencement date a cancellation fee of 100% of the total tour reservation applies.

NOTE: while we understand that cancellations may at times be unavoidable we highly recommend you purchase adequate travel insurance to cover you for this.

  • Car rental - Toyota Corolla Hatch automatic or similar (driver must be 21 years old)
  • The minimum age to rent and drive a vehicle is 21.  Please note there is an additional surcharge of $28.75 (including GST) for drivers aged from 21 to 24 years inclusive. The cost of this is payable directly to Europcar upon collection
  • On collection you will require a credit card to collect your vehicle. Note debit or pre-loaded travel type credit cards may not be accepted. Europcar also require a bond of up tp NZ$350 in the form of a credit card imprint. This is only authorized and not debited to your card. This is fully refundable should no extra charges be incurred during your rental period. A full tank of fuel is provided on collection of the vehicle. Please return the car with a full tank to avoid any additional refuelling charges. Any number of drivers can be listed at no additional charge. All drivers must have a valid driving licence printed in English or a valid international licence. When you collect your rental car please ensure you are familiar with and understand the terms and conditions of renting a car.
