Can you cycle on Madeira? Surely you have this thought too, as the island is known as a hiker's paradise. But we can reassure you that it works very well with us! You can circle almost the entire island on beautiful panoramic roads. Where it gets too mountainous, we help out with transfers. And so you can enjoy the summer climate all year round amidst exotic flora and fauna. Along the way are wonderful parks and gardens, tranquil bays and spectacular cliffs. But culture is not neglected either. As early as the 15th century, the Portuguese settled the island in the middle of the Atlantic and left behind stately quintas and monumental fortresses. Spend a wonderful week with us on the island of flowers. The landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the culture of the ancient seafarers and, above all, the hospitable Madeirans will inspire you!

Details of the route on the island of flowers

During the five daily stages, you will explore the most diverse corners of the island of flowers. Your first accommodation is in Caniço, for the start a transfer will take you to Camacha. Along the mountain road, you set your sights on the east coast and the picturesque Porto da Cruz. Take a look at the traditional farmhouses in Santana before tackling the stage on the east coast and arriving in São Vicente.

On day 4, you will explore the mountains of Madeira from Paúl da Serra, accompanied by magnificent views and grazing flocks of sheep. Once you arrive in Porto Moniz, you will have earned a dip in one of the natural swimming pools. The west coast of Madeira ahead of you is particularly picturesque. Enjoy the inviting sandy beach in Calheta before embarking on the last stage to Funchal. Make sure you stop at the Cabo Girao viewpoint - the panorama is incomparable! Before your journey home, take a ride on the famous Teleférico do Funchal, a cable car that runs from the old town to the mountain village of Monte.

The highlights of your cycling vacation on Madeira

Between sugar cane mills and volcanic beaches in Porto da Cruz: the small fishing village is beautifully nestled between the famous Eagle Rock, green forests and the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can enjoy the sea, typical local cuisine in authentic restaurants and, if you wish, a cultural program. In addition to sugar cane mills, you will find the "Engenhos do Norte" factory, where rum is produced.

The Skywalk at Cabo Girão: at a height of 580 meters, there is a top-class viewing platform. Look over the edge of the glass construction, where the steep cliff drops several hundred meters into the depths.

The island capital Funchal: Situated in a bay, the capital of Madeira enchants visitors with its charm and lively atmosphere. The city is arranged like an amphitheater, yet nature is never far away. Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores or stroll through the colorful Rua de Santa Maria.

Things to know about your vacation on the Portuguese island

Madeira is suitable for cycling almost all year round, and the mild temperatures allow you to take a break from everyday life even in winter. The stages vary greatly in length from 25 to 50 kilometers, but Madeira is characterized by a very hilly topography - experience in the saddle and a good level of fitness are recommended! As compensation, you can enjoy wonderful views over the island and the Atlantic Ocean during your breaks.
