The Lower Dolpo Trek takes us to a remote and spectacular corner of the Himalayas in the largest district of Nepal occupying 15% of total land area, bound to the east and south by the huge Dhaulagiri and Churen Himal ranges, to the west by Jumla district and isolated from rest of the country by high passes to the south. Lower Dolpo Trek is recommended to trekkers who are used to trekking into great heights and although is a difficult route compensated however by the beauty of the countryside and kindness of the people.
The Tibetan-style villages of Tarap and Phoksumdo Lake boast impressive gompas and monasteries, where yak caravans remain the main form of transportation. Observing different rain shadow landscapes with stunning mountain views, wildflowers, Himalayan blue sheep, snow leopards, and huge birds Himalayan griffon.

Fly to NEPALGUNJ (160m/525ft)
From Kathmandu domestic airport it is a one-hour scenic flight to Nepalgunj, which lies in the southern Nepal border with India and has a hot tropical climate. Overnight at hotel. Meals: Breakfast
Fly to JUPHAL (2490m/8170ft); Trek to DUNAI (2030m/6660ft) 2-3 hours
From Nepalgunj, there are only a few days flight a week in the early morning for the 40 minutes flight to the Himalayan terrain land of Juphal. Flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal is short but exciting. The trail to Dunai descends past the houses heading southeast through fields to reach the village of Dangi Bhara. Passing through the village and continuing between more fields of maize we cross a stream and reach another settlement of Kala Gaura. From here we walk close to the river on its south bank all the way to Dunai. After a short narrowing of the valley, we reach Roop Ghar from where the trail passes beyond the tributary stream on the opposite bank the entrance to the Suli Gad valley. Now crossing broad flat meadow fringed with pine and now small fields we see a large complex of hospital buildings seen on the opposite bank, we go through an entrance of Kani, and moments later we enter the district headquarter of Dunai which is a large village with the paved street lined with houses. Trek TARAKOT (2450m/8038ft) 5 hours; 430m ascent
We follow the trail eastward out of Dunai along the south bank of the Thulo Bheri. Crossing to the north bank and then the south bank again at Lawan the trail passes below the fields of Tarakot to a campsite near the Chyada Khola, just below the fortress of Tarakot village. Overnight at tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek LAINI (3160m/10368ft) 6-7 hours; 810m ascent, 100m descent
Climbing gently through pink fields of flowering buckwheat, we detour south into a side valley with views of Putha Himal, cross the Yalkot Khola and climb to a trail that hugs the south side of the river. Above Tarakot the Thulo Bheri is known as the Barbung Khola. Staying mostly high above the river we climb to 2670m before descending past cypress trees and a white chorten to a 120m long, high suspension bridge at Laisicap (2600m) and after some time we see Kanigaon village high above the trail. Here we can see a bird, white-breasted dippers found only in western Nepal. After visiting the Chhandul Gompa we come back to the main trail and continue through cedar forest as the valley walls start to close in. Three-sided tunnels are blasted out of the rock through the steepest part of the gorge, as the river drops steeply alongside the trail. The gorge finally starts to widen near Laini. Trek NAWARPANI (3545m/11631ft) 5 hours; 500m ascent, 60m descent
Walking ahead for some time we face a stiff climb on switchbacks to a mini pass marked with prayer flags at 3540m from where the trail makes a highly enjoyable high traverse through a very steep gorge eventually descending to cross the cascades of the Tilba Khola (3570m). Now we climb one more ridge and descend to the Chyugur Khola (3520m). A rough stone house under a rock offers cave-like accommodation and we can see Crag martins fly high above the gorge. We cross the suspension bridge to the river’s true left and after some time again to the right bank to reach finally a mule caravan stop of Nawarpani. Trek DO TARAP (4080m/13386ft) 6-7 hours; 630m ascent, 140m descent
As the gorge narrows, we cross to the true left bank and pass a small cave to climb a thrilling section of trail chiseled out of the sheer rock face. Recrossing the Tarap Chu at Tal Tole (3680m) and after passing a narrow slot canyon we climb on the east bank through a classic eroded Trans Himalayan landscape to a chorten on a ridge at Serkam (3870m) from where we descend and cross back to the west bank from a kilometer further we swing into the Sishul Khola to reach a campsite with a cave at 3840m. The trail is rocky as it traverses beneath cliffs to a bridge at 3920m. We cross to the east bank where a huge side valley leads up the Lang Chu to the remote village of Lang. Heading north up the Tarap Chu and climbing slowly alongside the river past mani walls and eroded cliffs we climb to a village of Do Tarap keeping an eye out for blue sheep along this section. The views over the valley are superb and we can visit the surrounding monasteries, the Ribo Bhumpa Gompa, Doro Gompa, and Shipchok Gompa. Overnight at tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek NUMA LA BASE CAMP (4440m/14568ft) 3-4 hours; 360m ascent
Heading west out of Do Tarap we reach a century-old Mekyem Gompa which features a large statue of Maitreya Buddha. Now passing through the Crystal Mountain School the trail continues uphill to Gakar village and the Dorje Phurba Gompa that has a collection of ancient weapons. After some time the trail crosses the Tarap Chu on a wooden bridge that leads to Mondo (4170m) from where the valley divides for the Upper and Lower Dolpo Trek routes. So we take the southern branch, passing the white-walled Jampa Lhakhang to Tok-khyu village at 4180m. We continue on to Numa La Base Camp, tucked in a side valley by a stream. The large white building high on the hill is Sherin Gompa. Overnight at tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek NUMA LA PASS (5290m/17356ft); Trek PELUNG TANG (4465m/14650ft) 6-7hours; 540m ascent, 960m descent
From Numa La Base Camp, we cross the stream on rocks and climb steeply on yak trails up a grassy slope to a ridge with several mani walls and a chorten at 4580m. We continue up the ridge to a grassy knoll and a tiny stream at 4700m dipping into a high glacial bowl (4960m) before crossing a small stream and making the long climb up a moraine to the 5290m Numa La. From this high pass, we have great views of Shey Shikar (6139m) and Kanjeralwa to the northeast, and the tip of Dhaulagiri I (8167m) to the southeast. We descend from the pass into a scenic U shaped, rocky valley. The trail swings sharply left and we move ahead passing yak caravans hauling timber and watching blue sheep and snow leopards in this remote valley which drops down to join another large valley from the east. We follow the river downstream past dramatically eroded cliffs to make a sharp U-turn to the left, swinging into another large side valley. We walk around the ridge into the valley and climb gently to reach pastures at Pelung Tang. The spectacular glaciated peak at the head of the valley is Norbu Kang (6005m). Overnight at tented camp. Trek BAGA LA PASS (5175m/16979ft); Trek DAJOK TANG (4080m/13386ft) 6 hours; 670m ascent, 1330m descent
The trail crosses the stream and switchbacks up a slope to a small meadow known as the high camp at 4740m from where the trail hits the snowline and climbs a ridge to offer fine views of Norbu Kang, before ascending a moraine into a large bowl marked by a chorten of upturned stones. The trail arcs gently around the bowl on a scree slope to several rough cairns atop Baga La. From Baga La, the trail descends steeply in the beginning and then more gently staying high above the right bank of the stream. At 4390m the trail turns a corner and enters a huge valley, making a final descent on steep switchbacks to a beautiful Dajok Tang with a large moraine and numerous waterfalls. Several snowy peaks including Kagmara (5960m) crowd the horizon at the end of the valley. Overnight at tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek PHOKSUMDO LAKE (3620m/11877ft) 3-4 hours; 70m ascent, 270m descent
Following a trail down past views of Sonam Kang to a collection of herders huts from where traverse high above the river through groves of thorny shrubs, juniper, and blue pine into a huge valley topped by the distant snowy range of Kagmara Lekh. After an initial descent, the trail climbs and contour around the hillside to a decorated ridge (3750m) and then see a huge waterfall across the valley. The trail descends gently through the blue pine forest to the chortens and barley fields of Ringmo village at 3640m from where we walk to the stunning shores of Phoksumdo Lake. Overnight at tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek CHEPKA (2670m/8760ft) 5- 6 hours
After an insightful visit, we leave Phoksumdo and descend towards Chepka. The trail goes downhill through a forest of big cedars, past a village of Palam (3280m) which is a winter settlement used by the people of Ringmo village, and then pass through another village of Renje (3010m) to reach finally to Chepka village. Overnight at tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek JUPHAL 4-5 hours
We continue the descending trail through the villages of Sankta (2460m), Kageni (2260m) and Suli Gaad (2070m) respectively to reach Dunai (2030m). Dunai is the headquarters of Dolpa. From Dunai we trek a few more hours to reach Juphal. Overnight at tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Fly to NEPALGUNJ; Fly to KATHMANDU
From Juphal we fly to Nepalgunj and then finally to Kathmandu and drop at the hotel. This is a leisure day which can be utilized by buying gifts and souvenirs for your friends and family. In the evening you will be invited to join FAREWELL reviewing great photos and share experiences of the trip. Overnight at hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

Alpine Club of Himalaya is a trusted trekking and tour operator in Nepal (Registration No: 66893/066/067) dedicated to providing exceptional travel experiences. Our goal is to ensure your satisfaction with our travel and adventure services. Please review the following terms and conditions for booking with us.
General Booking Conditions
Deposit Policy
For trips to Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, a photocopy of your passport and a 35% deposit of the total trip cost are required to confirm your booking.
This 35% deposit is non-refundable and is used to secure hotel reservations, transportation, trekking permits, and other advance arrangements.
The remaining balance must be paid upon arrival in Kathmandu, prior to the commencement of the tour.
Booking a Trip
* A 'trip' encompasses any itinerary or activities, including trekking, tours, expeditions, and other adventure programs that you purchase from us.
* The contract between Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. and the client is established only when we send a confirmation invoice or email to the customer.
* We reserve the right to adjust the prices of trips or tours before the booking is confirmed and the contract is finalized.
Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. will not be responsible for any warranties, collateral agreements, prior agreements, or descriptions of services or conditions beyond those explicitly stated in this agreement.
Cancellation Policy
If you need to cancel your booking with the Alpine Club of Himalaya, please provide us with written notice. We will confirm the receipt of your cancellation request. The amount you will be charged for canceling will depend on how close to the departure date you make your request:
• 60 days or more before departure:
A non-refundable cancellation fee of 35% of the total tour cost will apply.
• 45 to 59 days before departure:
40% of the total tour cost will be charged.
• 30 to 44 days before departure:
50% of the total tour cost will be charged.
• 15 to 29 days before departure:
70% of the total tour cost will be charged.
• 7 to 14 days before departure:
85% of the total tour cost will be charged.
• Less than 7 days before departure:
100% of the total tour cost will be charged.
Please note, no refunds will be provided if you voluntarily drop out once the trip has begun or if you do not use any pre-paid services such as accommodation, transportation, or meals.
Cancellation by Alpine Club Of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd.
Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. reserves the right to cancel any trip, including those guaranteed to operate, before departure due to circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, flight cancellations, strikes, industrial action, wars, riots, illness, quarantine, government restrictions, adverse weather, or other unforeseen events. In such cases, we will provide a refund of the trip price only. If a guaranteed trip is canceled, you will have the option to either receive a full refund or choose an alternative trip of equal value.
Significant alterations do not include changes to airline carriers, flight schedules, or itineraries, as long as departure and arrival dates remain the same. Changes in cabin category or hotel accommodation will be within the same category.
Please be aware that Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. is not liable for any incidental expenses or consequential losses incurred by the client as a result of the booking. This includes costs such as visa fees, vaccinations, non-refundable flights or rail fares, parking fees, loss of earnings, or loss of enjoyment.
Additionally, no refunds will be given if you choose to withdraw from the trip after it has commenced, or if you do not utilize any pre-paid services, including accommodation, transportation, or meals.
Last-Minute Booking
Last-minute bookings for Nepal trips are accepted up to one day before departure. Full payment is required immediately. Last-minute bookings for Bhutan and Tibet trips are not accepted.
Trip Postponement
If you need to postpone your trip, notify us in writing with your new departure date. We will transfer your reservations to the new date at no additional cost, unless there are changes in rates for the new date.
Medical Conditions and Special Requirements
If you have any medical conditions or special requirements, please inform Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. at the time of booking. This includes physical disabilities or any other conditions that may affect your ability to travel. Failure to disclose such conditions may lead to refusal of travel and potential forfeiture of your deposit or even the full trip cost.
Certain trips may not be suitable for clients based on age, physical conditions (such as mobility issues or pregnancy), or mental health. It is your responsibility to verify suitability before booking. Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. will not provide special accommodations unless explicitly agreed upon in writing. We will make every effort to accommodate special requests, including dietary preferences, but such requests are not guaranteed and do not form part of the contractual agreement.
Medical facilities and standards vary by country, and Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. makes no representations or warranties regarding the quality of medical treatment available.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is mandatory for all clients. It should cover personal injury, medical expenses, repatriation, helicopter rescue, and other relevant risks. We recommend purchasing insurance from a reputable provider in your country.
Passport and Visa
Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Nepalese visas can be obtained at the Nepalese Consulate or on arrival at Kathmandu Airport. Visa costs are the client’s responsibility.
Flight Delays and Changes in Itinerary
Please be aware that mountain adventures are subject to unpredictable weather conditions. Bad weather in mountainous regions can lead to delays or cancellations of domestic flights. In such cases, Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. will arrange accommodation (guesthouse) and provide meals (lunch and breakfast) if requested by the client. However, clients are responsible for covering any additional expenses, including those for extra food and accommodation. If you opt for alternative arrangements, such as a helicopter flight to bypass delays, you will be responsible for all associated costs.
Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. is not liable for missed international flights. We will make every effort to assist with alternative arrangements where possible. Additionally, please note that changes to the itinerary may be necessary due to adverse weather conditions or other factors beyond our control during outdoor activities.
Payment Methods
Payments can be made via wire transfer or credit card.
Credit Card Payment
To pay by credit card (Mastercard or Visa), select your trip package, complete the required information on the “BOOK THIS TRIP” form, and pay the specified advance amount. You will receive an invoice and further instructions via email.
Physical Fitness
Good health is essential for a successful Himalayan adventure. Ensure you are physically and mentally prepared to tackle the demands of the trip. We prioritize your well-being and aim to make your journey with us unforgettable and enjoyable.
Guaranteed Departures
Once your trip is booked, we guarantee departure on the scheduled date, regardless of group size. Even if fewer participants join, we will proceed with the trip as planned. Our team at Alpine Club of Himalaya is committed to adhering to your schedule and ensuring a seamless experience.
Risk and Liability
We strive to provide exceptional service and a pleasant holiday experience. However, Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. and its affiliates are not responsible for itinerary changes due to unforeseen circumstances such as government restrictions, natural disasters, political unrest, flight cancellations, or other events beyond our control. Adventure trips inherently involve risks, and clients accept responsibility for any personal injuries, damages, or additional expenses that may arise.
Cost Adjustments
Alpine Club of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. reserves the right to adjust prices posted on our website due to unforeseen factors like exchange rate fluctuations or government actions. We strive to keep published prices accurate and offer seasonal discounts to match your budget and schedule.
Injuries and Evacuations
Our package costs do not include personal insurance. Alpine Club of Himalaya is not liable for injuries or health issues during the trip. Clients should have their own insurance coverage.
Client Responsibilities
Our tour/trek leader has full authority during the trip. Any unlawful behavior may result in immediate removal from the tour, with no refund.
Publicity
We may use photos and videos of clients for promotional purposes on our website, but we respect privacy and will not disclose personal information.
Personal Belongings
While we take measures to ensure the safety of your belongings, Alpine Club of Himalaya is not responsible for lost or damaged luggage or personal items during the trip.
Privacy
The information collected during the booking process is used solely for arranging permits and organizing your trip. We do not share or use your personal details for any other purposes or disclose them to third parties.
Missed or Unused Services
No discounts or refunds will be provided for missed or unused services. This includes situations such as voluntary or involuntary departure from the tour due to illness, family emergencies, late arrivals, or early departures, whether voluntary or involuntary.
Updating of Terms and Conditions
Alpine Club Of Himalaya Pvt. Ltd. reserves the right to update and amend these terms and conditions at any time. Clients are responsible for staying informed about any changes. The most current version of the terms and conditions will be available on our website at www.alpineclubofhimalaya.com and will be applicable in the event of any disputes.
