Welcome to Ireland!

Experience the unique beauty of the Emerald Isle with us on our study trip to Dublin! You will be enchanted by the picturesque landscape as soon as you approach the airport. "Cead mile failte" - A hundred thousand times welcome to Ireland! On arrival, transfer to the hotel. In the evening we get to know each other better over dinner. Let the journey begin! (A)
Our first stop is Kilkenny. From the castle, which once belonged to the famous Butler family, to the cathedral, we walk through a colorful and lively book of Irish history. Here a Gothic cathedral, there the old market, around the corner the brewery and right next to it the courthouse and who knows, maybe we will find traces of the witch of Kilkenny, who was up to mischief here in the Middle Ages. The journey continues to the Rock of Cashel, which rises majestically 60 meters above the plain. We explore the collection of buildings of early Irish Christianity, the spectacular ruins of which tell of a history of well over 1000 years of the rock! From here - with a good view over the golden valley - the Irish high kings once ruled the south of the country before the rock passed to the church. Breathtaking! 250 km (F, A)
In Midleton, we delve into the secrets of the production of "uisce beathas", the "water of life", known to us as "whiskey". We explore the historic production site and, of course, taste one of the excellent Irish drops! We continue to Cork, the undisputed center of the south. The former "Rebel City", which resisted the English in the War of Independence, was dressed up as the European Capital of Culture a few years ago. We get to know the city and have enough time to look around on our own. 160 km (F)
The landscape slowly changes. The fuchsias and broom bushes are increasingly joined by palm trees. Wow! An unmistakable sign that we are approaching the Atlantic and the Gulf Stream. We visit Bantry House. The gardens were laid out in Italian style over seven terraces. From the top garden, we enjoy the breathtaking view over the Bay of Bantry. In the house, we take in the impressive collection of art treasures. Then we do as the Irish do and enjoy tea and scones during a break. In Glengarriff we cross over to Garinish Island and admire what Annan Bryce and his gardener have created over decades of work: they have turned a barren rock into a garden of the world! Continue to Tralee. 235 km (F, A)
What can you say about Ireland's most popular scenic road? We make up our own minds and enjoy the ever-changing landscapes between sea, coast and mountains on the Ring of Kerry. In between, we drink an Irish coffee, look forward to photo stops with great views, gaze out over the vast Atlantic next to Charlie Chaplin's memorial and are welcomed by John Kissane on his sheep farm. Here we are given an impressive demonstration of how he works with his herding dogs and sheep in the mountainous terrain. We then drive through Killarney National Park and enjoy ─ if it is dry enough ─ a walk through the parklands of Muckross House. 230 km (F, A)
Early in the day, from the romantic beach at Inch, we look south and see the landscape where we were traveling yesterday. Today we head to the Dingle Peninsula, past the fishing town of the same name, a lively place with colorful houses, stores and cozy streets. With its almost untouched nature and flaming fuchsia hedges, the peninsula is not only of colorful beauty, but also exceptionally rich in early Christian remains. Archaeologists have counted around 2000 oratories, beehive huts, megalithic tombs, high crosses, stone circles, ogham stones and ring forts. Our gaze falls on the Blasket Islands and we wonder how people were able to live on these barren little rocks until 1953. We leave Dingle and, with a short stop in the village of Adare, make our way to Lahinch. On the way to Limerick we make a photo stop at the Treaty Stone and learn why Limerick has gone down in history as the city of the broken treaty. The evening is at your leisure. 280 km (F)
Today we visit the famous cliffs of Moher, up to 214 m high, experience Irish music tradition up close and marvel at the extraordinary landscape of the Burren. First we head for the cliffs of Moher, look down and let the wind blow around our ears. Pretty high! Buffeted, we make the short journey to Doolin, where Sheila and Christy are already waiting for us in their house. We immerse ourselves in the cozy and private atmosphere in front of the crackling fireplace and listen to the traditional music played by Christy and a friend. Afterwards, Sheila treats us to salmon, cheese and a glass of wine. We listen to their stories and feel like friends. Then it's off to the Burren. Often described as a lunar landscape, the Burren is a high plateau of porous limestone that at first glance seems to be almost devoid of life. At second glance, however, it is astonishing to see the rich flora that has managed to establish itself here, hidden in the sheltered nooks and crannies of the limestone slabs. In the middle of this landscape stands the over 5,000-year-old Poulnabrone Dolmen, a megalithic portal tomb that exudes an air of magic and is reluctant to reveal its ancient secrets. 90 km (F)
Today we explore the lively and vibrant port and university city of Galway, the gateway to the northwest of Ireland. Here, where Kennedy once gave his famous speech, we learn more about the traditional Claddagh rings and the moving story of the mayor who sacrificed his own son for justice. In addition to these interesting stories, we also have enough time to explore the city on our own. 100 km (F, A)
After five days on the Atlantic, we head back east. In the former monastery complex of Clonmacnoise, we delve once again into the history of early Irish Christianity and marvel at the huge, elaborately designed Celtic high crosses that await us here. Once in Dublin, we continue with a panoramic city tour and photo stops. We get to know Dublin from different eras and quickly realize that the River Liffey divides Dublin into two halves. The north side is known for the shopping streets of O Connell and Henry Street, the General Post Office and Custom House. The south side, on the other hand, often appears more upmarket to the visitor, with the elegant pedestrian and shopping street of Grafton Street, St. Stephens Green Park and the two cathedrals of St. Patrick's and Christ Church. Along Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square, we discover the typical Georgian Dublin of the 18th century and take in the special streets! A highlight of our trip is a visit to St. Patrick's Cathedral, built in 1213 and the largest cathedral in Ireland. We review our trip over a final dinner together. 230 km (F, A)
It's time to say goodbye to the Emerald Isle. Drive to the airport and return flight to the departure airport. (F) Flight schedule, hotel and program are subject to change. (F=breakfast, A=dinner)
