Morocco Desert Camel Trek: 4-Day Sahara Experience

Departure early in the morning from your riad or hotel in Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m) — the highest road pass in Morocco. Along the way, admire breathtaking panoramic views of mountains, valleys, winding roads, and traditional Berber villages.

Stop to visit several historic kasbahs, including Tamnougalt and the famous Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 16th century. Renowned as one of the best-preserved ksars in Morocco, Ait Benhaddou has been featured in many Hollywood films and series.

Continue the journey through the lush, palm-filled Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river oasis, before reaching Zagora, the “capital of dates.” From there, travel further south to Mhamid, the gateway to the Sahara Desert.

In the evening, enjoy dinner and overnight stay in a traditional nomadic standard desert camp, surrounded by the silence and vastness of the dunes.

After breakfast at the camp, begin your trek on foot from Mhamid, accompanied by your nomadic guide and camel caravan. The journey takes you deep into the Sahara Desert, walking at a gentle pace through vast dunes and desert landscapes.

Pause for tea and lunch in the shade of tamarisk trees, a traditional desert rest spot. After a refreshing break, continue towards the sanctuary of Sidi Naji, a site rich in history and oral tradition. Local custom recalls that this marabout lived here 18 generations ago, making it a place of memory and spiritual significance.

In the evening, the bivouac will be set at the foot of the sand dunes, where you will enjoy dinner and spend the night under the desert sky.

At sunrise, the tents are taken down as the caravan prepares to continue the trek. Walking to the rhythm of the desert sun, you will cross rocky plateaus and open landscapes, following the traditional caravan routes.

Lunch will be enjoyed in the shade of tamarisk trees, offering rest and coolness before the afternoon walk. By late afternoon, you will return to Mhamid, where you will spend your final night in the desert.

After enjoying a traditional Moroccan breakfast in the desert, your driver will take you back through the Draa Valley and across the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. Arrival at your riad/hotel with unforgettable memories of your Sahara trekking adventure.
