In the early spring, this usually barren area comes to life with the blooming of numerous desert adapted flower species. The old Bushmen believed the flowers represented the souls of departed springbok.

День 12

Day 15-16: Okavango Delta

It is with great excitement that we cross the border into Botswana and travel the short distance to the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta and a truly unique spectacle of nature.

The Okavango River, emanating from central Angola, far to the northwest, flows south- and eastwards, before slowing and spreading into one of the world’s only true inland deltas, creating as it does so a unique ecosystem that supports a huge variety of animal and plant life. The sight of a Jacana striding delicately amongst the flowering lilies, the Bee Eater diving to prey on an unsuspecting insect, and of course the familiar cry of the African Fish Eagle – all combine to create the canvas of one of nature’s unique masterpieces. The river, eventually spilling its contents into the vast plains of the Makgadikgadi sands, disappears.

Our comfortable and well-appointed camp on the edge of one of the largest lagoons serves as a base from which we explore. We will glide through narrow reed-lined channels by mokoro, walk on uninhabited islands, and picnic in the wilderness, while learning about the animals and plants of the Delta from local guides who have grown up in the area. Through informal interaction with the guides, we will have the opportunity to learn about the local people and their way of life in this isolated wilderness. We will also have time to simply relax and enjoy the views over a glistening lagoon from a beautiful wooden deck, cold drink in hand, or take a refreshing dip in the pool. We will enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on a boat. A helicopter flip, to see the vastness of the Delta from the air, is recommended (own expense).

Meals: B L D; B L D

Day 18

Makgadikgadi Pans

After the early mornings of the last few days, we enjoy a relaxed start at the lodge today, spending time along the river bank enjoying the tranquillity of the area, or lounging at the swimming pool. For those interested, we recommend going on a local village walk. Chenoga Village, not far from our lodge, is not on a regular tourist route, so you have the opportunity to explore an authentic village with one of our staff from the lodge, who lives in the village.

We have an early lunch, before continuing our journey eastward into the spectacular Makgadikgadi Salt Pans area. Oceans of golden grass give way to the stark white pans, under a very big sky. We stop to take in the isolation and serenity of this expanse, before continuing to our accommodation for the night, Elephant Sands Lodge. Close-up sightings of elephants at the water hole are almost guaranteed.

Meals: B L D

Included Highlights / Activity:

– Visit to Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Day 19

Kasane - Victoria Falls

Venturing north today, we leave the desolation of the pans behind and make our way up to the mighty Chobe River. The Chobe area is known for the huge herds of elephants and other animals that are attracted to drink from the river. Renowned for its Elephant herds, these majestic animals are known for the absolute gentleness and love of their young and affection for their herd. This afternoon we enjoy an extensive boat cruise within Chobe National Park. Gliding close to the banks we hope to approach the animals from the river for close up viewing. Our cruise will explore the Chobe riverfront and a section of the Namibian side of the Chobe River. Back on land, we cross the border into Zimbabwe and make our way to our accommodation for the night. The lodge is centrally situated and within walking distance of the falls and other attractions.

Awaking in the adventure capital of Africa, it is with new excitement that we explore the amazing Victoria Falls. “Mosi o Tunya “, meaning “The smoke that Thunders”. On this day we include your entry into the falls and leave you to admire this wonder of the world.

During our stay various other attractions can be visited like the tribal village or curio market. Vic Falls is also home to a multitude of adventure activities such as an aircraft flip over the falls or a boat trip on the Zambezi River, white water rafting or bungee jumping, but allowance must be made for the extra expense.

We spend two nights here, thus allowing clients some time to explore the town and all it has to offer by themselves. Tonight we will eat out in a local restaurant (own expense). Relax to the sound of the African night and the distant roar of the falls and drink the farewell toasts to your adventure.

Meals: B (Lunch and Dinner own expense)

Clients will further be expected to adhere to the hygiene guidelines and requirements as specified by their guide. Participation in, and involvement of this nature will greatly enhance the degree of satisfaction and enjoyment clients derive from the tour.

GROUP SIZE AND AGE

Our group size usually numbers between 4 and 18 clients. By travelling in small groups, it means that we don’t invade wilderness areas and can avoid wasting time in constantly having to wait for people. It also enables us to maintain a far more personal service to our clients. From our experience our groups are normally made up of international groups of individuals, couples and sometimes groups of friends.

MONEY AND CURRENCIES

Each tour will require different amounts of spending money, depending on the length of the tour and the individual needs of the client. Clients should budget for soft drinks, alcohol, restaurant meals and other items of a personal nature. Credit cards are not generally accepted in countries north of South Africa. Clients are advised to bring spending money in US Dollars and in small denominations. Tipping is part of Africa’s culture, a reward for good service: 10% to 15% is the norm.

TRANSPORT AND DISTANCES

Hino trucks, Mini busses and Land Cruisers are amongst the vehicles operated on the tour, all chosen for their practicality and reliability. Vehicles seat up to 18 clients, depending on the application. The vehicles are not air-conditioned but are designed with customer safety and comfort in mind. Although the daily distances are well balanced, on certain days distances of up to 800 km are travelled.

GUIDES AND INSTRUCTIONS

Drifters’ guides are all full-time, professional guides, chosen for their knowledge of the environment, their experience and ability. All guides are registered with the Field Guides Association and Tourism authorities. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of the group, the guide’s instructions must be adhered to.

ACCOMMODATION

Depending on the tour, accommodation will be provided in tents, lodges, bungalows and rondawels (African style huts). Occasionally you may sleep under the stars. Accommodation is based on twin sharing. Single clients will be paired off with suitable roommates unless a single supplement is paid. When camping, Drifters provide camp beds but for added comfort and insulation clients may wish to bring along an inflatable sleeping mattress.

EQUIPMENT, SLEEPING BAGS AND NECESSARY ITEMS

All tour equipment including cooking and camping equipment, utensils, plates, tents, chairs and the like are provided. Clients are required to bring sleeping bags, small pillows and towels as well as toiletries and other personal items they may require for the tour. LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE

Baggage on all tours is limited to one large bag (barrel bag or internal framed backpack) weighing a maximum of 20kg and a small hand luggage bag or camera bag per person. In order to prevent complications on vehicles, boats and other transportation, this allowance must be adhered to.

LAUNDRY

A rudimentary laundry service is provided at some overnight stops. This service is only intended as a basic service for clothes and towels. Drifters will not be responsible for any loss damage or destruction incurred when making use of these third party services.

SMOKING

In accordance with South African legal requirements, smoking will not be permitted in our vehicles or in public spaces. We will however make regular stops for photographs and smoke breaks.

VISAS AND BORDERS

Although every possible assistance will be offered, it is the client’s sole responsibility to ensure that they have the required visas and paperwork to ensure trouble free border crossings.
