We will board a small 12-seater aircraft for a 50-minute flight to visit the famous Kaieteur Falls, which is the world’s highest free-falling waterfall with a single drop. The waterfall is located where the Potaro River plunges 741 feet into the gorge. After spending 2 hours exploring the waterfall from various sites, we will fly back to George Town. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Georgetown for the evening. Please note that the visit to Kaieteur Falls may occasionally be rescheduled depending on the number of people booked for the flight.

We will start our day with a morning flight that will take us over Guyana’s rainforest, which is part of the Amazon jungle. Our destination is Rupununi, where we will be transferred by 4WD jeeps to the Iwokrama Rainforest Lodge and Research Center. This region is known for its incredible rainforest, boasting a remarkable diversity of species. It is also one of the best places to spot Jaguars in their natural habitat.Upon arrival, you will have the afternoon free to explore the trails with a ranger, immersing yourself in the beauty of the rainforest. Later in the evening, we will embark on a thrilling night boat trip to search for the elusive Black Caiman and other fascinating nocturnal creatures that inhabit the area. Remember to bring a little luck with you!

An early boat trip on the Essequibo River offers an opportunity to hear the dawn chorus before breakfast. You then set off on a short boat ride to the base of Turtle Mountain, keeping an eye out for sloth, capybara, caiman and arapaima – the world’s largest freshwater fish – plus red howler, edge-capped capuchin and black spider monkeys. The exhilarating climb to the 290-metre-high summit takes around two hours, but is worth the effort for the breathtaking views. On your return there is time to relax for a while, then as it starts to cool off, you set out to visit the Amerindian petroglyphs at Kurupukari Falls. After nightfall you meander along the river by boat looking for tree boas and tree frogs before making your way back to the lodge for dinner.

Early transfer though Iwokrama Rainforest, which is fast gaining an international reputation for its jaguar population. Stop en route for birding in the mori scrub, an unusual low forest on sandy soil that supports birds such as rufous-crowned elaenia, black manakin and red-shouldered tanager. Continue to Iwokrama Canopy Walkway to watch canopy-dwelling birds plus red howler and black spider monkeys. There are trails to walk, or you can explore the area around the lodge, where deer and agouti are regular visitors. Another major target is the white-winged potoo which can be seen from the canopy walkway after dark.

The forest around the lodge offers good birding, but the main attraction is the canopy walkway, from which you can see birds that would be difficult to see from the forest floor. Among the highlights are several species of parakeet, Caica parrot, Guianan puffbird, waved and golden-collared woodpeckers and three species of antwren. If the trees are in fruit, you may see rare dusky purple-tuft and purple-breasted cotinga.The clearing around the lodge is one of the best places to spot the ‘must-see’ crimson fruitcrow, which often feeds in the nearby trees. A family group of black curassow regularly passes through and, with luck, you should be able to add this usually timid bird to your list.

Welcome the dawn chorus from the canopy walkway and witness the activity as short-tailed nighthawks settle for the day, swifts take to the sky, white-throated and channel-billed toucans yodel, and barred-forest falcons call. After breakfast drive into the forest to seek out Guianian cock-of-the-rock and hear about the uses of jungle plants, then continue to the Amerindian village of Surama, set on a small patch savannah surrounded by rainforest-clad hills. Surama’s inhabitants are mainly from the Macushi tribe and still observe many traditional practices. After settling in, you visit the school, medical centre, church and some village houses. A short trail walk will show you the forest through the eyes of your indigenous guides, and you’ll learn about medicinal plants and their uses. Later, a night walk reveals the mystery of the forest after dark.

Rise before dawn to walk across the savannah and climb Surama Mountain in the cool morning air – the best time for birdlife. After breakfast at a lookout with fine views across to the Pakaraima Mountains, return to the village. A five-kilometre afternoon walk takes you across the savannah and through rainforest to the Burro Burro River, where your guides paddle you in canoes to see giant river otters, tapir, tira, and spider monkeys, before returning to the village for sunset.

Start your day by taking a serene walk through the forest, immersing yourself in the beauty of the breaking dawn. After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will embark on a journey to the Rupununi River. Traveling in a 4WD vehicle or Bedford truck, we will reach the river where a boat awaits to take us to Karanambu Lodge, a special place established by the late Diane McTurk.In the late afternoon, we will venture out on a boat, exploring the river in search of the magnificent Giant River Otters and other fascinating species that call this region home. As dusk approaches, we will continue our boat ride to the ponds, where you will witness the blooming of the giant Amazonia Regis water lily, a truly remarkable sight. During our boat ride back, a spotlight will be used to search for the elusive Black Caiman and other nocturnal animals that inhabit the area. It will be an exciting and memorable experience, observing the wonders of nature under the night sky.

This morning we enjoy a birding walk along the Panorama Trail in the Pakaraima Mountains and also hope to see some poison dart frogs out on the trail as well. After breakfast back at the lodge, you drive to the banks of the Rupununi River. Jabiru stork and toco toucan are often seen on this stretch of road, along with red howler and spider monkeys. From Ginep Landing you take a boat on the Rupununi, where – depending on the water level – may see giant otters, as several family groups live along this stretch of river. Your destination, Karanambu Lodge, is the former home of Diane McTurk, who was known for her work rehabilitating orphaned giant river otters.
In the afternoon you head out by boat to look for otters in the wild and see giant Victoria regia waterlilies bloom at dusk. On the way back your guide will use a spotlight to find nocturnal wildlife.

This morning, we will transfer by boat, with a focus on bird watching along the way, to the Amerindian village of Yupukari. Our destination is the Caiman House, where we will be spending the night. Tonight, you will have the incredible opportunity to embark on a foray on the Rupununi River from the Caiman House Field Station.As a guest, you will have a unique chance to support and actively participate in an ongoing field study of the Black Caiman, which is the largest member of the Alligator family and an endangered species. If the water level permits, you will even be invited to accompany the indigenous crew as they search for and capture these magnificent reptiles on the river.It will be an unforgettable experience, immersing yourself in the conservation efforts and research surrounding the Black Caiman.

This morning venture out onto the savannah in search of giant anteater. Then, after breakfast, transfer by boat to Caiman House Field Station in the Amerindian village of Yupukari, keeping an eye out for giant river otters, black caiman (which can reach more than four metres in length) and arapaima, and birding as you go.

Payment
A 20% deposit must be made at the time of reservation. Payment for the excursion must be made in full at the time of reservation, unless otherwise stated. We accept various forms of payment, including credit cards and online payment platforms.
Cancellation by Participant
You have the right to cancel your booking by notifying Across Caribbean Excursions. The amount of cancellation fees, if applicable, will be determined based on the date you provide notice of cancellation. These fees will be calculated as a percentage of the total price paid for the canceled Tour, product, or service (excluding any insurance products).
Cancellation of a Tour:
(a) If you cancel 90-95 days before the departure of the first product or service, Across Caribbean terms will retain your deposit in accordance with these terms.
(b) If you cancel 30-89 days before the departure of the first product or service in your booking: Across Caribbean Excursions will retain the Deposit in accordance with these Terms. An amount equal to 50% of the remaining payments made for the canceled Tour will be refunded.
(c) If you cancel less than 30 days before the departure of the first product or service in your booking: Across Caribbean Excursions will retain the Deposit in accordance with these Terms, and no further refund will be provided.
Cancellation of a Tour By Across Caribbean Excursions
Tour offered by Across Caribbean Excursions will be guaranteed to depart on the scheduled date when at least one booking secured by a valid deposit has been made for that departure. Across Caribbean Excursions guarantees that all scheduled Tour departures booked and secured with a valid deposit will proceed as indicated on the confirmation, with reasonable itinerary changes as described in these Terms or due to health and safety concerns in good faith. This guarantee does not apply in the case of Force Majeure. Updated Tour and itinerary information can be found on Across Caribbean Excursions’ website or by contacting them directly. Please note that brochures and other printed materials displaying Tour information and departure dates are subject to change and should not be relied upon for the purpose of this guarantee.If Across Caribbean Excursions cancels a Tour before the departure date for reasons other than Force Majeure, and the cancellation is not caused by your fault or negligence, you will have the following options:
(a) Acceptance of a substitute Tour of equal or superior value.
(b) Acceptance of a substitute Tour of lesser value if no Tour of equal or superior value is reasonably available. In this case, you may recover the price difference between the originally purchased Tour and the substitute Tour.
(c) A full refund of all payments made for the canceled Tour.
Liability Waiver
While we take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our guests during excursions, we cannot be held liable for any loss, damage, injury, or inconvenience that may occur. Participation in our excursions is at your own risk. It is recommended to have appropriate travel insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances.Across Caribbean Excursions is not responsible for any incidental expenses or consequential losses incurred by you as a result of the canceled booking. This includes expenses such as visas, vaccinations, non-refundable flights or rail tickets, non-refundable car parking fees, loss of earnings, or loss of enjoyment. The Travel Agency reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to issue a full refund instead of the options mentioned above. If a significant element of a Tour cannot be provided after departure, Across Caribbean Excursions will make suitable alternative arrangements if possible. If suitable alternatives cannot be provided or if you reasonably reject any suitable alternatives, the Travel Agency may provide a refund for unused products or services, as determined at its discretion.
