Cycling Bavarian Lakes - Local’s call this area “The Blue Land” because of the abundance of sparkling blue lakes. Your tour takes you around the edge of the Bavarian Alps, starting in the spa resort of Bad Tölz which is next to the Isar River. Your tour continues around various lakes, always in sight of the majestic Alps.
Experience authentic Bavaria, with chalets, geranium filled flower boxes and picture postcard scenery. Don’t forget the amazing food and drink you’ll find at beer gardens along the way. The former Olympic city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has a train that takes you up the glacier on Mount Zugspitze.
Tour Details: You should be in fairly good physical shape, since this tour has some hills to conquer before pedalling along the rivers and lakes.

Arrival to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch Partenkirchen – train or cycle to Mittenwald – Isar river valley – Bad Tölz, 59 km
You may take the train upwards to the border city of Mittenwald where you will follow the young Isar River out of the mountain. Enjoy the partly wild-green river passing the village of Grün and Wallgau. Along the Sylvenstein reservoir, you will come to the ski resort of Lengries and the cycle trail will start running almost next to the river to city of Bad Tölz with a fantastic market place.
Bad Tölz – Tegernsee – Bad Tölz, 45 km
Along the long distance cycle trail Lake Constance – Lake Königssee you will come to famous lake in Bavaria, the Tegernsee. Rich people love this lake and half of Munich is going there on the weekends if they will get a room. The lake is surrounded by mountains and from Gmünd you will have a wonderful view. On the return trail, you will pass a monastery with a beer garden on the right place!
Bad Tölz – Lake Kochelsee – Murnau, 45 km
Passing by the former king’s spa resort of Heilbrunn you will come to the famous monastery in the village of Benediktbeuern. This monastery has a long history (1250 years) and part of it are free to visit. Of course they also offer guided tours. Afterwards continue to Lake Kochelsee passing moorlands with a lot of flowers and plants.
Murnau – Train Tutzing – Lake Starnberger – Murnau, 45 km
The village of Murnau is situated next to the lake Staffelsee and we offer you 2 tours today. Take the train to the Lake Starnberg where you return to Murnau passing the „blue land“ with many little lakes. Or you do a roundtrip cycle tour in the blue land
Murnau – Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 35 bis 50 km
Cycling through the large moorland around Murnau will be wonderful. Afterwards you will follow the river Loisach back into the mountains. The trail leads you through an alpine pasture like landscape directly into the city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Restday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
After all that biking, you deserve a rest day! Take time to explore Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You could take a train up Mount Zugspitze, which is the highest mountain in Germany. Another option is to take a local boat trip on Lake Eibsee, or walk through the famous Partnach Gorge. Maybe you just want to relax in the spa garden listening to a concert.
