Travel to Edinburgh and on to Stirling

After your arrival in Edinburgh between 2:40 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., we make our way together to Stirling, our accommodation for the next six nights. We will already experience the barren highlands during the drive. The picturesque historic town of Stirling in central Scotland is an excellent base for excursions to the Highlands, the east coast and the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. The medieval Stirling Castle stands on a rugged volcanic rock in the heart of the old town. The medieval old town developed around the castle and invites you to linger with its many small cafés and stores. 50 km (A)
After breakfast, we visit Stirling Castle. It has always been true that whoever controls Stirling Castle is lord of the Scottish Highlands. Even today, the castle towers over the picturesque old town, offering sweeping views of the plain and an excellent opportunity to learn about the country's turbulent history. Next on the day's program is Glasgow. After the decline of heavy industry and shipbuilding, the city has spruced itself up in recent years and become a cultural capital that is attracting more and more visitors. On a short city tour interspersed with walks, we see a mixture of yesterday and today. Of course, the highlights such as George Square with its impressive monuments to Victorian prosperity and the cathedral are not to be missed. In the city center we are amazed at the hustle and bustle. 98 km (F, A)
Our journey takes us to St. Andrews, known as Scotland's most powerful spiritual center and home to the country's oldest university. St. Andrews is also the home town of golf. We visit the grounds of the enormous cathedral ruins with their partly very well preserved walls. From the tower of the "St. Rules Tower" we have a fantastic view of the listed, historic town and the nearby coast. We continue to Scone Palace. The Moot Hill, which derives its name from the Gaelic Tom-a-mhoid, is where the Stone of Scone was kept, on which the kings of Scotland were crowned. The Scottish coronation throne also stood here when King Edward I took the stone and had it carved into his own royal throne in Westminster Abbey in 1296. We visit the castle with its beautifully furnished interiors and "breathe" historical air. After the tour, we follow a British tradition and enjoy tea and scones, a pastry that is served with afternoon tea. 210 km (F, A)
A long and eventful day lies ahead of us. We drive into the deserted mountain world of the West Highlands. Through the historic "Valley of Tears", Glencoe, we reach the large geological collapse zone known as the "Great Glen". Here, one loch follows another from west to east, partly connected by barrages. We visit Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness, a picturesque castle that was once hotly contested. Its well-preserved ruins are still a popular attraction today, stimulating our imagination and reminding us of the battles of the Scottish clans in the past as well as the sea monster Nessie. 495 km (F, A)
Blair Castle, the former residence of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl, presents us with the baronial style. The castle at Blair Atholl has always stood out for its strategic location at the entrance to the Grampians and the northern route to Inverness. Blair Castle is also home to the Atholl Highlanders, the only legal private army in Europe. Today, however, it is a purely ceremonial bodyguard. During this visit, we get to know the castle's rooms and enjoy the charm of the estate. We stop for lunch in the pretty little town of Pitlochry. A visit to a whisky distillery is of course a must on a trip to Scotland. We start with a tasting of the "water of life" and then gain an insight into the traditional methods of whisky distilling. 85 km (F, A)
We've saved the best for last: Edinburgh! How to describe the elegance, dignity and vibrancy of this city? Take a look for yourself. We drive over the Forth Road Bridge, from where we have a good view of the famous Forth Railway Bridge. This bridge is known the world over for its cantilever design and is the main link from the Scottish Lowlands to the Highlands. We have planned to visit the Old Town, the New Town and Edinburgh Castle today. We stroll along the Royal Mile, past bagpipe sellers, kilt makers and street artists. 190 km (F, A)
In the morning, it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to the hospitable Scots. Together we make our way back to Edinburgh Airport and fly back home between 12:45 and 15:00. 50 km (F) Flight schedule, hotel and program are subject to change. (F=breakfast, A=dinner)
