Welcome to Sumatra, home to the famous orangutans, or 'forest dwellers' if you translate the Indonesian term. Before you have the opportunity to meet these endangered animals for yourself, your tour guide will first take you through the city of Medan. You will visit the Sultan's Palace, built in 1888, which once served as the seat of the city administration. Although the sultan no longer has any political power today, he is regarded as a symbolic figure for the local population. Then drive to the large mosque. It was built in 1906 and is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the country. You will then travel on to Bukit Lawang. On the way, take a break at a palm oil and rubber plantation.

Hike through the Leuser National Park on a three-hour tour in search of the orangutans, the main attraction. In the morning, drive to Berastagi, which is known for its pleasantly cool climate, flowers, orchids, fruit and vegetable cultivation. The 'markisa' or passion fruit is particularly popular here and is pressed into a refreshing juice. Berastagi is also home to the Karo-Batak people, who have remained true to many of their traditions and rituals and still hold extraordinary wedding ceremonies and funeral rituals that can last for days. In Berastagi, you will visit Lumbini Park, where a Buddhist temple rises up, visually reminiscent of the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar. Afterwards, you can indulge your senses with some exotic fruits at a fruit market. From there, drive to the Gundaling hill near the town, which offers you a wonderful view of Berastagi against the backdrop of the two active volcanoes Sibayak and Sinabung. You will be back at your hotel in the afternoon.

Today you will continue towards Samosir. On the way there, you will get to know a Karo-Batak village and its inhabitants and see the Sipiso-piso waterfall. You have the opportunity to visit a longhouse and the old palace of the Batak Simalungun kings. In Simarjarunjung, you will have a sweeping view over Lake Toba, the largest lake in Indonesia. You can also gain an impression of the local tea production in Pematang Siantar. From Parapat, a ferry will finally take you across to the Samosir peninsula, where your next hotel is located.

Surrounded by volcanic cliffs, you drive along the largest crater lake in the world, which is 100 km long. Experience the everyday life of the villagers, for example in Tomok, where you can see the old burial sites of former Sidabutar kings. The sultan's city of Yogyakarta is considered the cultural center of Central Java. Numerous Javanese traditions and arts such as batik, gamelan and Javanese dance are cultivated here.

Prambanan temple complex and dinner with a performance of the Ramayana ballet in Purawisata (A)
In the afternoon, you will visit the Hindu temple complex of Prambanan, which dates back to the 9th century. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The complex consists of eight main temples surrounded by numerous smaller individual temples. The three largest shrines are dedicated to the three gods Shiva the Destroyer, Vishnu the Preserver and Brahma the Creator. Then drive to Purawisata. There you will experience a dance performance of the Ramayana ballet while you enjoy your dinner.
Drive to the world heritage site of Borobudur. Let yourself be guided through the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world and learn more about the history behind this incredible architecture. Constructed from solid volcanic and river rock, the temple was built using only human power, a process that took 75 years. The former importance of this impressive temple can be guessed from the pictorial reliefs. A bicycle awaits you at the exit of the temple, allowing you to experience the Javanese landscape up close as you ride to a local village. Gain an impression of the everyday life of the villagers and treat yourself to a refreshing coconut in a plantation. Visit the nearby Mendut Temple by car, which is home to three impressive stone statues. A little further on, the Pawon Temple is known for its simple yet beautiful symmetry. You then drive back to Yogyakarta.

At the train station in Yogyakarta, board the train to Mojokerto (07:25 - 11:23). Enjoy the view on the scenic route to East Java. From Mojokerto, continue by car through exotic nature. After a four-hour drive, you will have reached the mountain village of Ngadisari, which lies at an altitude of 1,700 m in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Enjoy the cool mountain air.

Today you get up at around 02:30 and drive through the outer caldera to Penanjakan (2270m). The glowing sun behind the volcano will stay in your memory forever. You will then drive back into the caldera to the foot of the volcanic crater, where horses will take you up the mountainside to a staircase that leads to the crater rim (2329 m). Then breakfast at the hotel and onward journey to Surabaya.

Today you have to get up early so as not to miss one of the most spectacular natural phenomena on your journey through Java. At 04:30 you will be picked up in an off-road jeep and after a 1.5-hour drive through the mountain and plantation landscape you will reach the base camp Paltuding at an altitude of 1850 meters. From there, you walk the last 3 km uphill until you reach the crater rim at an altitude of 2385 meters after about 1.5 to 2 hours. On the way, you will meet locals carrying 80 kg baskets of sulphur on their shoulders down the mountain. As you will see at the top, the smoking sulphur fields lie not far from the turquoise-blue crater, surrounded by a wonderful view from the top of the volcano. You will then begin your descent and be taken back to your hotel.
Today you will drive to the Gunung Kawi temple, which is located at an archaeological site. The temple elements were carved into the rocks in the 11th century and, together with the long staircase (315 steps) that leads you down through rice terraces into the small river valley, are surrounded by a mystical aura. The Tirta Empul water temple is very popular with the Balinese because of the sacred water that is fed into the bathing pools from natural springs. Kintamani offers a fantastic panorama over the open caldera of Mt. Batur (1412 m), with its lava fields and crater lake. On the way back to Ubud, take a break at a coffee plantation. Learn how the most expensive coffee in the world, Luwak coffee, is produced and try different types of coffee. In Tegalalang you have the opportunity to take a photo of the most beautiful rice terraces Bali has to offer.

Jeep tour through ancient lava flows of the Batur volcano
While other tourists leave it at this sight, you drive down into the caldera and let four-wheel drive jeeps take you into the lava fields. On foot, you explore the lava flows of past eruptions from 1834 and 1964 and follow the paths to a cave in the middle of the lava rock.
Explore the artists' town of Ubud on your own. Visit one of the very interesting art museums, such as Museum Puri Lukisan, Museum Neka or Museum Antonio Blanco. Take a walk through the monkey forest or through the surrounding rice fields. Stroll through the fabric market or through small boutiques and beautiful jewelry stores. In the evening, you can watch traditional Balinese dances such as the kecak or barong dance in the center of Ubud.

You set off early in the morning to explore the western part of the island of Bali. If you are an early riser, you will reach the rice terraces in Jatiluwih before the usual tourists arrive. The picturesque terraced fields are part of the Suabk irrigation system, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Take a short walk through the terraces and enjoy the fresh morning air in nature. From there, drive through the mountains to Bedugul. Before you visit the wonderful water temple by the lake, visit the colorful market in Candikuning, which sells fresh fruits, vegetables, spices and exotic flowers. You then drive to the Alas Kedaton monkey forest, which is home to hundreds of monkeys that, according to local beliefs, are the guardians of a small temple located in the middle of the forest. The famous Tanah Lot temple is located on a volcanic rock off the southwest coast. At low tide it is possible to walk over to the rock. The day tour ends back in Ubud.
Your tour today takes you to the center of Bali, to the village of Guliang Kawan. On the way there, you will visit a traditional market to buy the ingredients for lunch later on. In Guliang Kawan, you will be welcomed by the villagers with coffee and tea. In a subsequent cooking class, you will learn about everyday Balinese eating habits and forms of preparation and get an impression of the exotic ingredients and the extraordinary culture. After lunch in a hut on the edge of the rice fields, you can watch the farmers at work in the fields. Depending on the season, you will learn how the farmers in Bali plant or harvest their rice and how the irrigation system for wet rice cultivation works. Visit another village, Pengelipuran, which has preserved its traditional Balinese architecture to this day. Then drive to Sanur / Nusa Dua to your beach hotel, where you can relax for the rest of the day.
