Take two great powers, in this case the Roman Empire and the naval power of Venice, and let them rule the same region one after the other. The result? An incredibly charming blend of culture and history. Now let's add a nature park or two and our dream trip to the edge of the Balkans is complete. I look forward to seeing you! Your Angelika Meißner

Journey to Split

After arriving at Split airport, we first settle into our hotel in nearby Trogir. (A)
The Roman Emperor Diocletian was a son of Dalmatia. He left behind an ambivalent legacy. Praised for his reform of the Roman Empire, he is also known in many regions of Europe as a persecutor of Christians. We follow in his footsteps in the lively port city of Split, from his former palace to his mausoleum, today's cathedral. During our walk, we quickly realize that, in addition to the Romans, the Venetians in particular left their architectural mark on their "Spalato". Later in the day, we stroll through the small town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site like Split. 70 km (F, A)
In the morning, we set off for Plitvice and leave the coastal region for the time being. The highlight of the day is the incomparable mosaic of turquoise lakes, waterfalls, cascades and green islands in the Plitvice Lakes National Park. We enjoy this unique spectacle of nature to the full before checking into our hotel in the late afternoon. 270 km (F, A)
In Zagreb, we walk from the Wilhelminian-style buildings of the new town via Jelacic Square and Dolac ─ the green market ─ to Kaptol Square. It is visibly dominated by the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. We then head to the Upper Town, which is now the political center of the country. We arrive at our spa hotel in the late afternoon. 175 km (F, A)
A touch of Habsburg! We explore Ljubljana on the trail of 5,000 years of settlement history. Roman heritage and a picturesque old town with Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau façades await us in the elegant Slovenian metropolis. In Postojna, nature has built its own cathedrals. The 20-kilometer deep Adelsberg Cave is one of the largest and most fascinating cave systems in Europe. We then reach our hotel in Opatija. 260 km (F, A)
The towns of the Istrian peninsula are art-historical jewels, polished over centuries. In Pula we see the Roman amphitheater, one of the best preserved in the Mediterranean. During a photo stop in the small town of Rovinj, we notice the unmistakable Venetian influence. After lunch near Porec with typical local cuisine, we reach the old town of Porec and visit the Euphrasian Basilica with its mosaics from the 6th century. Back in Opatja, we stroll through the old town and see many villas from the Habsburg era, such as Villa Angiolina with a park full of sculptures and exotic plants. If you prefer to mingle with the locals, join them in one of the town's coffee houses. 270 km (F, M)
From Opatija and past Rijeka, we head back south along the coast to Senj, a small town and a pirate's nest feared by the Venetians for centuries. Zadar looks back on 2,000 years of history, which the town is happy to present to us. The most important building is the two-storey round church of Sveti Donat, built on the foundations of the Roman forum. 360 km (F, A)
Deep gorges, karst landscapes, rolling green hills. All this awaits us in the Krka National Park. The Krka River makes its way over seven large waterfalls, through rapids and lakes before flowing into the sea 46 meters below. A place for a rustic lunch. Varied views are guaranteed! We spend the afternoon in Sibenik, which was built in terraces on the limestone cliffs at the mouth of the Krka River. Here, the Cathedral of St. James, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and probably the most beautiful Renaissance building on the eastern Adriatic, is a delight. 195 km (F, M)
Island hopping in the Adriatic! Early in the morning, we cross over to the island of Hvar, visit Stari Grad, which was founded by the Greeks, and enjoy the lifestyle of the "fairytale town" of Hvar. Architecture, nature and climate combine here to create an idyllic overall picture. Later in the day we drive over to the Peljesac peninsula, where we stay in Orebic. 270 km (F, A)
How do I create an open-air air conditioning system when I build a town in the 13th century and have no electricity? In the island capital of Korcula, an ingenious and simple solution was found. The streets were laid out in a herringbone pattern. You can feel the mild wind on your skin as you stroll through the alleyways. Back on the Peljesac peninsula, we marvel at the mighty medieval walls in Ston. 150 km (F, A)
Today's excursion takes us to the third country on this trip: Montenegro, the land of the black mountains. We explore the Bay of Kotor, one of the most beautiful bays in the world, which penetrates 20 kilometers deep into the land. Rugged cliffs are reflected in the emerald green water and small beaches are framed by palm trees and oleanders. In the town of the same name, Kotor, we stroll through narrow alleyways to fortress towers and hear about the region's eventful 2,000-year history. 180 km (F, A)
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik opens up a magnificent showcase of history. Surrounded by medieval city walls and fortifications lapped by the sea, the old port city shines with eternal beauty. We take plenty of time for the "old" Dubrovnik. We stroll along the "Stradun" to the Dominican monastery, from there to the harbor and the Cathedral of the Assumption. Directly opposite is the Rector's Palace, the seat of the once independent Senate. If you like, you can discover great photo opportunities by walking along the city wall, which is around two kilometers long. 50 km (F, A)
Today we say goodbye to the Adriatic coast and start our journey home. Unless you wish to extend your vacation by a few days. (F)
