О туре

The casual visitor to Botswana could be excused for seeing the country as kilometre upon kilometre of flat, desolate scrubland with little or no surface water. But on closer inspection, coupled with local knowledge, a whole new world will manifest itself, and what is arguably Africa’s finest wildlife destination can be experienced. Botswana is a country the size of France, with over a quarter of its land is set aside exclusively for nature conservation.

Our tour will take us through the vast Kalahari plains We then venture further north, into the magnificent Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland river delta, which spills water from the faraway mountains of Angola into the vast plain of the Makgadikgadi, creating a unique wildlife paradise. We explore the world renowned national parks in fully equipped, open 4×4 vehicles, our route following the age old game migration tracks, depending on the season. We enjoy a game viewing boat cruise on the Chobe River, in Chobe National Park, and finally we visit “The Smoke that Thunders” – Victoria Falls.

Clients may opt to fly out from Victoria Falls or to complete the journey back to Johannesburg, travelling southwards overland. This tour offers the adventure traveller, the photographer, the birdwatcher and the naturalist the ultimate natural paradise.

KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY

DAY 1: KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY

Our adventure starts on departure from Johannesburg at 06h30. Making our way through the dry thornveld of South Africa’s North West Province, we aim to cross the Botswana border at Martins Drift. On completion of customs and immigration formalities, we enter the vast Kalahari plains that stretch as far as the eye can see.

We will cover quite some distance today before arriving at our accommodation, Khama Rhino Sanctuary. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary (KRS) is a community- based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. Covering approximately 8 585 hectares of Kalahari Sandveld, the sanctuary provides prime habitat for white and black rhino as well as over 30 other animal species and more than 230 species of birds.

Tonight we enjoy a catered meal while our guide explains the procedure for the days to come.

Maun

Awaking early, we set off on the first of many open vehicle game drives. We will explore the Khama Sanctuary in search of rhino and the many other species that inhabit this unique environment before returning to the camp for brunch.

We then continue our journey northward into the true wilderness and we pass through numerous remote villages whilst skirting the immense Salt Pans – Makgadikadi. The last part of our journey takes us along the Boteti River and to our stop for the night, the DRIFTERS MAUN LODGE. The Lodge offers comfortable twin bedded units, all with wonderful views over the wide Boteti River – the bird watching is exceptional. Fall asleep tonight to the deep grunts of hippo.

OKAVANGO DELTA

DAY 3 – 4: OKAVANGO DELTA

After an early start, we leave the lodge and head back towards Maun in time to catch your connecting flights into the Okavango Delta.

The Okavango River, emanating from the highlands of central Angola far to the northwest, flows south- and eastwards, before slowing and spreading into one of the world’s only true inland deltas, creating as it does so a unique ecosystem that supports a huge variety of animal and plant life. The sight of a Jacana striding delicately amongst the flowering lilies, the Bee Eater diving to prey on an unsuspecting insect, and of course the familiar cry of the African Fish Eagle – all combine to create the canvas of one of nature’s unique masterpieces. The river, eventually spilling its contents into the vast plains of the Makgadikgadi sands, disappears.

Our comfortable and well appointed camp on the edge of one of the largest lagoons serves as a base from which we explore. We will glide through narrow reed-lined channels by mokoro, walk on uninhabited islands, and picnic in the wilderness, while learning about the animals and plants of the Delta from local guides who have grown up in the area. Through informal interaction with the guides, we will have the opportunity to learn about the local people and their way of life in this isolated wilderness. We will also have time to simply relax and enjoy the views over a glistening lagoon from a beautiful wooden deck, cold drink in hand, go for a walk with our guide, or take a refreshing dip in the pool. One afternoon we enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on a boat. A helicopter flip, to see the vastness of the Delta from the air, is recommended (own expense).

FLEXIBLE GAME RESERVE SCHEDULE KHWAI AREA

DAY 5–8: FLEXIBLE GAME RESERVE SCHEDULE — KHWAI AREA

Starting early, we transfer back to the airstrip to catch a second flight over the vast expanse of the Delta and Moremi National Park, to the Khwai airstrip. Be sure to take in the breathtaking sights of the Delta, and also keep an eye out for the wildlife that inhabits it.

Whilst in the air, our support vehicle will have gone ahead with your luggage. On landing, you will be met by the Drifters ground crew and transported in open vehicle game viewers to our exclusive tented camp on the banks of the Khwai River. This wild experience is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the tour.

For the next four days, we game-drive extensively during the day to stop at hides and waterholes at leisure and to make the most of our time here. We travel in well-equipped, open 4×4 Land Cruisers with our local Motswana guides, exploring the Khwai concession and the famous reserves of Moremi and Savuti. Our route is flexible and depends on the season.

The vegetation is constantly changing – from open plains with palm trees, to marshland, to dense Mopane woodlands or Acacia scrub. This variety of habitats makes for excellent game viewing. The 4x4s aren’t just for show, as the national parks are truly wild places; the roads are just tracks in the sand. We carry only our cameras and day packs, a picnic lunch, and drinks for the road. Towards sunset, we arrive back at our tented camp in the bush, where the ground staff have lit a warm fire to welcome us.

After a hearty meal it is time to retire. Drifting off to sleep to the howl of the distant hyena or the earthy roar of a lion and even the deep grunt of a half-submerged hippo. We stay at an exclusive Drifters tented camp on the banks of the Khwai River, offering a wild yet comfortable experience with permanent tented units and shared ablution facilities. The site is completely secluded and undeveloped – it feels as if we are the first people here, and alone in the world. We bring everything we will need with us and leave nothing behind when we depart.

Our backup crew remains with us throughout, so we can concentrate on the wilderness. Depending on the ever-changing conditions in the National Parks, we might also venture into the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve or the unique Makgadikgadi Pans National Park.

MAUN

Our last morning in the parks, we slowly game drive our way back to Maun. We enjoy an own

supplies, before travelling the short distance out of town to the Drifters Maun Tented Lodge, our stop

MAKGADIKGADI PANS

DAY 10: MAKGADIKGADI PANS

After the early mornings of the last few days, we enjoy a relaxed start at the lodge today, spending

time along the river bank enjoying the tranquillity of the area, or lounging at the swimming pool. For

those interested, we recommend going on a local village walk. Chenoga Village, not far from our

lodge, is not on a regular tourist route, so you have the opportunity to explore an authentic village with

one of our staff from the lodge, who lives in the village.

We have an early lunch, before continuing our journey eastward into the spectacular Makgadikgadi

Salt Pans area. Oceans of golden grass give way to the stark white pans, under a very big sky. We

stop to take in the isolation and serenity of this expanse, before continuing to our accommodation for

the night, Elephant Sands Lodge. Close up sightings of elephants at the water hole are almost guaranteed.

CHOBE RIVER – VICTORIA FALLS

DAY 11: CHOBE RIVER – VICTORIA FALLS

Venturing north today, we leave the desolation of the pans behind and make our way up to the mighty Chobe River. The Chobe area is known for the huge herds of elephants and other animals that are attracted to drink from the river. This afternoon we enjoy an extensive boat cruise within Chobe National Park, gliding close to the banks we hope to approach these animals from the river for close up viewing. Our cruise will explore the Chobe River front and a section of the Namibian side of the Chobe River. Back on land we cross the border into Zimbabwe and make our way to our accommodation in Victoria Falls. The lodge is centrally situated and within walking distance of the falls and other attractions.

VICTORIA FALLS

DAY 12: VICTORIA FALLS

Awaking in the adventure capital of Africa, it is with new excitement that we explore the amazing Victoria Falls. “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, meaning “The smoke that Thunders”. This is the place where, according to ancient traditions, the “Big Snake” or “Nyami Nyami” is in hiding. Your entry fee to the Falls is included in the tour price, and you are free to spend as much time as you like viewing the Falls and exploring the surrounding rainforest. Various other attractions can be visited and activities enjoyed including the tribal village or curio market. Victoria Falls is also home to a multitude of adventure activities, such as an aircraft flip over the falls, a boat trip on the Zambezi River, white water rafting or bungee jumping, but allowance must be made for the extra expense of these optional, but worthwhile, activities.

We spend two nights here, thus allowing you some time to explore the town and all it has to offer, with the freedom to choose the sights and activities that interest you. Tonight we will eat out at a local restaurant (own expense). Relax to the sound of the African night and the distant roar of the Falls and drink a farewell toast to your adventure.

PARTICIPATION

The assistance of clients in the daily activities forming part of the tour is essential. Clients will be expected to assist with the preparation of meals, setting up and taking down of camp (camping tours) and with other necessary daily chores. Clients will further be expected to adhere to the hygiene guidelines and requirements as specified by their guide. Participation in, and involvement of this nature will greatly enhance the degree of satisfaction and enjoyment clients derive from the tour.

GROUP SIZE AND AGE

Our group size usually numbers between 4 and 18 clients. By travelling in small groups, it means that we don’t invade wilderness areas and can avoid wasting time in constantly having to wait for people. It also enables us to maintain a far more personal service to our clients. From our experience our groups are normally made up of international groups of individuals, couples and sometimes groups of friends.

MONEY AND CURRENCIES

Each tour will require different amounts of spending money, depending on the length of the tour and the individual needs of the client. Clients should budget for soft drinks, alcohol, restaurant meals and other items of a personal nature. Credit cards are not generally accepted in countries north of South Africa. Clients are advised to bring spending money in US Dollars and in small denominations. Tipping is part of Africa’s culture, a reward for good service: 10% to 15% is the norm.

TRANSPORT AND DISTANCES

Hino trucks, Mini busses and Land Cruisers are amongst the vehicles operated on the tour, all chosen for their practicality and reliability. Vehicles seat up to 18 clients, depending on the application. The vehicles are not air-conditioned but are designed with customer safety and comfort in mind. Although the daily distances are well balanced, on certain days distances of up to 800 km are travelled.

GUIDES AND INSTRUCTIONS

Drifters’ guides are all full-time, professional guides, chosen for their knowledge of the environment, their experience and ability. All guides are registered with the Field Guides Association and Tourism authorities. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of the group, the guide’s instructions must be adhered to.

ACCOMMODATION

Depending on the tour, accommodation will be provided in tents, lodges, bungalows and rondawels (African style huts). Occasionally you may sleep under the stars. Accommodation is based on twin sharing. Single clients will be paired off with suitable roommates unless a single supplement is paid. When camping, Drifters provide camp beds but for added comfort and insulation clients may wish to bring along an inflatable sleeping mattress.

EQUIPMENT, SLEEPING BAGS AND NECESSARY ITEMS

All tour equipment including cooking and camping equipment, utensils, plates, tents, chairs and the like are provided. Clients are required to bring sleeping bags, small pillows and towels as well as toiletries and other personal items they may require for the tour. Sleeping bags can be hired/purchased from Drifters but this must be arranged prior to departure.

LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE

Baggage on all tours is limited to one large bag (barrel bag or internal framed backpack) weighing a maximum of 20kg and a small hand luggage bag or camera bag per person. In order to prevent complications on vehicles, boats and other transportation, this allowance must be adhered to.

LAUNDRY

A rudimentary laundry service is provided at some overnight stops. This service is only intended as a basic service for clothes and towels. Drifters will not be responsible for any loss damage or destruction incurred when making use of these third party services.

SMOKING

In accordance with South African legal requirements, smoking will not be permitted in our vehicles or in public spaces. We will however make regular stops for photographs and smoke breaks.

VISAS AND BORDERS

Although every possible assistance will be offered, it is the client’s sole responsibility to ensure that they have the required visas and paperwork to ensure trouble free border crossings.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Various optional activities are available during the course of our tours. These include white water rafting, bungee jumping, quad biking, etc. All of these activities are run by independent operators and Drifters cannot be held responsible should they not be available, or for any loss, damage, illness, injury or death suffered whilst participating in any optional activities and which shall be undertaken at the sole risk of the client.

CANCELLATION PROCEDURE

Cancellation of any booking must be received in writing and acknowledged by DRIFTERS. If a booking is cancelled with the consent of DRIFTERS, the latter shall retain the full deposit. Should a person cancel a tour/venture and cannot find an immediate replacement:

b) If DRIFTERS has less than 4 weeks notice, the deposit and in addition a cancellation fee will be payable by the client as follows:

27-21 days 40% of total fare

20-14 days 60% of total fare

13-0 days 100% of total fare

c) If you fail to join a tour/venture or join it after departure, or leave it prior to its completion, no reimbursement whatsoever will be made.

Please Note: Due to the high demand in Gorilla permits for the Uganda tour, the Drifters office will only confirm your tour departure once the permit is secured. Once the Uganda tour booking is confirmed, the Gorilla Permit will be automatically pre-booked and paid for. The guest/s will then be liable for full payment of the permit even if the tour is cancelled.

No provision in this agreement shall be interpreted to the disadvantage of any party, by reason of such party having or being deemed to have structured, drafted or introduced such provision/(s) or by reason of the extent to which any party or its professional advisors participated in the preparation of this agreement, and accordingly the rule of interpretation against the draftsman shall not be applied in the interpretation of this agreement.

All the terms and conditions contained in this agreement, notwithstanding the manner in which they are grouped together or grammatically linked, are separated and severable from each other, if any term or condition is held to be unenforceable by any law or competent authority, such provision shall be severable from this agreement and shall not affect the remaining clauses, which shall remain of full force and effect. All the information contained in any brochure, catalogue or any website (or which accompanies, or forms part of any offer made by Drifters, is subject to alteration at any time without prior notice and Drifters will not be bound to comply exactly therewith.
