Off to Gdansk

You will reach Gdansk during the day by train or plane. On arrival, transfer to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may have time to explore the city on your own. In the evening, we will get to know each other over dinner and get in the mood for a few interesting days in the north of Poland. (A)
The mighty Hanseatic city of Gdansk shows itself from its best side: when Poland's king traveled to Gdansk, he entered the city center through the High Gate. During our city tour, we will also walk from there via Langgasse and the Long Market with the Neptune Fountain to the Artus Court. The architectural heritage of the Hanseatic League is also obvious to us, as this is where the city's merchants met to do business, but also to celebrate. At the Green Gate, which opens onto the water, we see the Long Bridge over the Mottlau and the city's landmark, the Crane Gate. The elegant Frauengasse with its very own terraces in front of the houses leads to St. Mary's Church, the largest brick church in the world. The afternoon is at leisure. Our tip: How about a visit to the National Museum? Here hangs Memling's triptych "The Last Judgement", whose curious story even led to diplomatic entanglements. (F)
We set off early and drive to Malbork ( Marienburg ), the most powerful fortress in Europe in the Middle Ages. Today, the imposing red-brick complex is considered the largest medieval fortress in Europe. Here we delve deeper into the history and culture of the Teutonic Order. The Grand Master's Palace in particular, with its battlements and towers, embodies the former courtly splendor. In the afternoon we reach the lively city of Olsztyn, the historical center of the Warmia-Masuria region. We admire the imposing Olsztyn Castle, the city's landmark. This jewel is closely linked to the work of the famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Strolling through the lively market square, surrounded by beautiful buildings, we enjoy the flair of the old town. In a café we learn about former Königsberg marzipan, which is produced here in the traditional way. You can look forward to a little sweet tasting. Today's day ends in the evening in Sensburg - our home for the coming nights. 390 km (F, A)
Chapels along the way greet us on the way to the pilgrimage site of Swieta Lipka. The place, which is called Heiligelinde in German, is still one of the most famous places of pilgrimage for the cult of the Virgin Mary in Poland. The local basilica with its cloister is one of the most important baroque monuments in Poland and is truly impressive. We listen to a short interlude on the ornate organ. Not far away is the former military situation center Wolfsschanze near Ketrzyn (Rastenburg), which we visit together. An eerie place. Amidst the ruins of the former bunkers, which are now covered in moss and lichen, there is a small memorial to July 20, 1944. After this (gruesome) historical stop, we relax on a boat trip together on one of the Masurian lakes. The land of Masuria boasts over 3,000 lakes connected by small rivers and canals and is one of the last natural regions in Europe. In the evening we enjoy the peace and nature at a barbecue evening together (weather permitting). 280 km (F, A)
When you think of Masuria, you think of dense mixed forests, wild meadows, extensive heathland and numerous watercourses and clear, deep lakes - that's how you feel, isn't it? Today we'll see for ourselves and experience this vast, pristine landscape on a visit to the Johannisburg Heath, the largest forest area in former East Prussia. The dense coniferous forests are broken up again and again by a variety of deciduous trees, which present their wonderful play of colors in autumn. Around Wojnowo/Eckersdorf we see typical wooden houses and visit the monastery of the Old Believers. Here we learn that in the 19th century, Filipinos who had to leave Russia because of their faith settled here. Let's end this visit on a romantic note: we glide along the Krutynia River in a punt under a network of green treetops and then discover the region up close on an easy hike. Before arriving at our hotel, we spend the afternoon in the well-known town of Nikolaiken. 80 km (F, A)
Today we leave Masuria and return to Gdansk through the Warmia region. In the morning, we first visit the magnificent architecture of Heilsberg Castle - actually the castle of the Warmian bishops in the town of the same name, before we have the Baltic Sea firmly in our sights again in Frauenburg. Here we meet again with the life of the great astronomer Copernicus, who worked here for a long time and was buried in the imposing cathedral. At the foot of the cathedral hill is a water tower, the construction of which began in the late Middle Ages. It was in operation from the end of the 16th century and supplied the cathedral hill with drinking water using an ingenious shovel technology - this technology was unique and there was only one other system in Europe at the time that provided fresh water in this way. Nowadays you have a fantastic view of the Vistula Lagoon from this tower - let's see for ourselves. We arrive back in Gdansk in the evening and review the experiences of the last few days over dinner in a restaurant. Of course, a glass of "Goldwasser" is a must for a toast. 260 km (F, A)
Eventful days lie behind us. The train or plane will take you back home from Gdansk. (F) Timetable, flight schedule, hotel and program changes are expressly reserved. (F=breakfast, A=dinner)
