О туре

Join Crooked Compass Founder, Lisa Pagotto, on this one-off Founder’s Tour venturing deep into the soul of southwest China, where ancient cultures, dramatic landscapes and rare encounters await. Travelling alongside Lisa, you’ll gain exclusive access and insight that lifts the veil on a part of China few ever truly see.

From the bamboo-scented teahouses of Chengdu to the glassy glacial lakes of Jiuzhaigou and the vivid travertine terraces of Huanglong, the adventure begins where myth and mountain meet. Watch dawn rise over the sculpted rice terraces of Yuanyang, carved by hand through centuries of Hani tradition. Wander through ancient towns where Confucian ideals are etched into temple walls and stone bridges still link stories of dynasties past.

This is not just a journey of places, but of moments. Sip tea with locals in 100-year-old teahouses, feast with Hani villagers in their homes and trace sacred paths through Tibetan monasteries where prayer flags ripple in alpine winds.

And then, Shangri-La. Among blooming meadows and yak-grazed plains, in a land once believed to exist only in fiction, find the stillness of a place lost in time. Here, the story of your journey finds its final chapter, steeped in raw beauty, spiritual rhythm and cultural truth.

Программа тура

Day 1

2nd April 2026 Arrival in Chengdu

Welcome to China. Upon arrival in Chengdu, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to settle in or explore your surroundings. Known as the home of Sichuan cuisine and the giant panda, Chengdu is a blend of modern vibrancy with deep-rooted tradition. This evening, enjoy a traditional Sichuan hot pot dinner, a flavourful introduction to the region’s famously bold and spicy culinary heritage. (D)

Overnight The Temple House or similar

Day 2

3rd April 2026 Chengdu

Early this morning, you will be transferred to the Giant Panda Breeding Centre where you have the opportunity to get up close to these amazing animals. Learn about the conservation efforts and breeding programs run by the centre.

Next, step into the heart of local life at Chengdu People’s Park. Among lakeside pavilions and fragrant tea gardens, discover the city’s slower pace. Stop by the Matchmaking Corner – something you will only experience in China, where elders pin handwritten ‘resumés’ of their children to trees and umbrellas in a lively, informal search for love.

Wander through the Wide and Narrow Alleys, a maze of restored Qing Dynasty streets where traditional courtyard homes meet modern street food stalls, boutique teahouses, and folk performances. As dusk falls, climb into a tuk-tuk and head deep into Chengdu’s culinary underbelly. With a local guide, weave through alleyways and night markets, sampling fiery street snacks, craft noodles, and unexpected bites that define the bold, numbing flavours of Sichuan. (B,D)

Overnight – The Temple House or similar

Day 3

4th April 2026 Chengdu - Jiuzhai Valley

Rise early and step into a world where time feels suspended. Travel to the village of Pengzhen on the outskirts of Chengdu, home to the Guanyin Hall Teahouse, one of the oldest in Sichuan. Tucked beside the slow-moving Yangliu River, this century-old teahouse is a living snapshot of Sichuan’s tea culture. Its soot-blackened rafters, creaking bamboo chairs, and open hearths remain unchanged. Here, locals gather each morning over steaming cups of green tea, smoking pipes, playing cards, and quietly reading newspapers. There is no performance, just the authentic pace of daily life in western China.

Later, board your high-speed train bound for Jiuhuang Station. Travel through Sichuan’s rural heartland as the urban sprawl gives way to forested hills and distant peaks. If time allows upon arrival, stop to explore Songpan Ancient Town. Once a vital military stronghold known as the “West Portal of Sichuan,” Songpan’s stone city walls and fortress gates still stand watch. Winding alleys, watchtowers, and centuries-old dwellings hint at its layered history as a frontier outpost along the Tea-Horse Road.

Continue by road to Jiuzhai Valley, a drive of approximately two hours through rising elevations and shifting terrain. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy dinner onsite as you settle into this remote alpine setting. (B,D)

Overnight – Hilton Jiuzhaigou Resort or similar

Day 4

5th April 2026 Jiuzhaigou

Enjoy the stunning views and colours of Jiuzhaigou National Park, which is the sister park of the United States’ Yosemite National Park. It is best known for its fabled blue and green lakes, spectacular waterfalls, narrow conic karst land forms and its unique wildlife. The water here is impossibly clear and you will have the opportunity to peer down into the depths of these mysterious pools to view ancient trees long since confined to a watery grave. Lunch today is in a local restaurant.

This evening, step inside a traditional Tibetan home come restaurant for an intimate encounter with local life as you enjoy a home-cooked feast with your hosts and some local entertainment. (B,L,D)

Overnight – Hilton Jiuzhaigou Resort or similar

Day 5

6th April 2026 Jiuzhai Valley to Chengdu via Huanglong

This morning, travel to Huanglong National Park, an otherworldly landscape whose name translates to “Yellow Dragon,” inspired by the shape of its sinuous, golden-hued travertine terraces winding through the forested valley. Board your round-trip cable car for a panoramic ascent through alpine terrain, with sweeping views of snow-dusted peaks and dense conifer forests.

At the top lies the Five-Colour Pond, Huanglong’s crown jewel. Framed by untouched wilderness, these brilliant turquoise and jade pools shimmer with mineral-rich waters in vivid contrast to the surrounding forest. Revered as a “fairyland on earth,” this surreal setting lives up to its name in every season.

The park is not only a visual marvel but also a biodiversity haven. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992, Huanglong shelters endangered species such as the giant panda and Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey within its remote and fragile ecosystem. Following lunch at a local restaurant, transfer to the railway station for your return journey to Chengdu by high-speed train, offering time to reflect on the natural wonders of China’s mountainous north. (B,L)

Overnight – The Temple House or similar

Day 6

7th April 2026 Chengdu to Kunming

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Kunming. Known as the “City of Spring” for its mild climate and year-round greenery, Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, a region shaped by diverse ethnic cultures, dramatic landscapes, and centuries of trade along the ancient Southern Silk Road. This city blends the pace of modern China with the traditions of its many minority communities.

On arrival, you’ll be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to rest or explore independently. Dinner this evening, is in a local restaurant. (B,D)

Overnight – Cachet Boutique Hotel or similar

Day 7

8th April 2026 Kunming to Jianshui via Stone Forest

Depart Kunming this morning for the Naigu Stone Forest, a journey of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by road. This striking geological formation is part of the South China Karst, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Towering limestone pillars, sculpted over millions of years by wind and water, rise sharply from the earth to create a maze-like landscape that has inspired myth and legend since the Ming Dynasty, when it was dubbed the “First Wonder of the World.”

On arrival, transfer by electric vehicle to the entrance of the scenic area. From here, enjoy a guided two-hour walk through the Stone Forest along well-marked paths. The route includes some stone steps with gentle ascents and descents. Stone benches are positioned along the way, offering opportunities to pause and take in the surroundings.

After exploring the forest and enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, continue your drive south to Jianshui, a historic town with over 1,200 years of layered cultural heritage. Once an important stop

along the ancient Southern Silk Road, Jianshui is known for its well-preserved classical architecture, tranquil courtyards, and Confucian influence. On arrival, check in to your accommodation and enjoy the evening at leisure. (B,L)

Overnight – Jianshui Heyuan Hotel or similar

Day 8

9th April 2026 Jianshui

Begin the day with a visit to the iconic Double Dragon Bridge. Spanning the confluence of two rivers, this 17-arch structure is hailed as a masterpiece of ancient Chinese engineering. Built during the Qing Dynasty, the bridge remains remarkably intact, a striking testament to the architectural skill and technological advancement of its era.

Continue to Tuanshan Village, one of the few remaining traditional walled villages in southwestern China. Step inside a living relic of Yunnan’s past, where ancient alleyways, stone courtyards, and ornate wooden homes reflect centuries of Han and Yi cultural fusion. Adjacent to the village is the Garden of the Zhang Family, a peaceful estate that showcases refined Chinese landscaping, calligraphy, and ornamental stonework.

In the afternoon, explore Jianshui Old Town, once a major administrative and cultural centre. Walk through the Chaoyang Gateway, a Ming Dynasty structure often called a “Miniature Tian’anmen” for its architectural resemblance to Beijing’s famous square. The gateway stands as a proud symbol of the town’s historical importance.

Visit the 700-year-old Jianshui Confucius Temple, one of the largest and best-preserved in China. Surrounded by cypress trees and lotus ponds, the temple complex offers a deep insight into Confucian teachings and classical Chinese design. It remains a vital cultural site and a nationally protected monument.

Conclude your day at the Zhu Family Garden, an exquisite example of Qing-era residential architecture. Its maze of pavilions, halls, and tranquil courtyards reflects the wealth and status of the influential Zhu family, offering a final glimpse into Jianshui’s elegant past. (B,L)

Overnight – Jianshui Heyuan Hotel or similar

Day 9

10th April 2026 Jianshui to Yuanyang

Depart Jianshui this morning and journey south into the Ailao mountain range, a drive of approximately 2.5 hours. Arrive in Yuanyang, home to some of the most dramatic and intricate rice terraces in Asia. Carved into steep hillsides by the Hani people over more than a millennium, the terraces here span 14 townships and cover over 110 square kilometres.

Yuanyang is not only a marvel of agricultural engineering, but also a region rich in natural bounty, known for its tropical fruits, Yunwu tea, and mineral wealth, including gold. This afternoon, visit the Bada Terraces, where expansive views showcase the layered complexity of Hani ingenuity. Later, if weather permits, take in sunset at Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth) Terraces, the steepest and most dramatic

of all the terrace sites. With their bold contours and vivid reflections, the scene evokes the appearance of an enormous brush painting, shifting in colour and texture as the light fades across the landscape. (B,L)

Overnight – Yuanyang Harve de paix DuoYiShu or similar

Day 10

11th April 2026 Yuanyang

Rise early this morning for sunrise over the Duoyishu Rice Terraces. As the first light spills over the eastern horizon, thousands of stepped paddies reflect the changing sky in silvery blues, pinks, and golds. It is one of the most iconic and atmospheric scenes in Yunnan.

Later, explore Azheke Village, a traditional Hani settlement tucked among lush bamboo groves. Home to the Hani people for over 160 years, Azheke is known for its distinctive mushroom-shaped houses, built from wood and thatch using ancient techniques suited to the mountain climate. The village name itself, meaning “a place where bamboo forests flourish” in the Hani language, reflects the community’s deep connection to its environment.

Wander through the village to gain insight into Hani traditions, architecture, and daily rhythms. This evening, visit a local Hani family for a home-cooked dinner. Share a warm and authentic meal as you experience the enduring hospitality and cultural pride of one of China’s most resilient ethnic communities. (B,L,D)

Overnight – Yuanyang Harve de paix DuoYiShu or similar

Day 11

12th April 2026 Yuanyang to Shangri-La

Depart Yuanyang this morning for the drive back to Kunming, a journey of approximately 4.5 hours through Yunnan’s ever-shifting highland terrain. On arrival at the railway station, board your high-speed train to Shangri-La. The rail journey takes around 5 to 6 hours, climbing steadily into the Tibetan Plateau.

Shangri-La, long romanticised since its appearance in James Hilton’s 1933 novel Lost Horizon, remains a place steeped in mystery and spiritual intrigue. Often described as the edge of the mythical, it is a region where Tibetan culture, dramatic landscapes, and high-altitude serenity converge.

On arrival, transfer to your hotel and settle in for the evening in this unique frontier town. (B,L)

Overnight – Songtsam Shangri-La Linka or similar

Day 12

13th April 2026 Shangri-La

Begin the day with a visit to Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. Often referred to as the “Little Potala Palace” for its resemblance to Lhasa’s iconic structure, the monastery is a living centre of devotion and study. Explore its gilded halls, prayer wheels, and vibrant

murals, then step into the monks’ quarters for a rare opportunity to engage in quiet conversation and gain insight into their daily routines and spiritual practice.

After lunch, travel into the pristine wilderness of Pudacuo National Park. Situated at over 3,500 metres, this high-altitude reserve is home to rare flora and fauna, crystal-clear lakes, and traditional Tibetan grazing lands. Stroll along the shores of Shudu Lake, where yaks and goats graze in alpine pastures, and continue through Militang Grassland toward the still waters of Bitahai Lake. Often called a pearl of the plateau, Bitahai is untouched by development and rich in ecological diversity.

As evening falls, head to Dukezong Ancient Town, one of the oldest Tibetan towns in the region. Join local residents in the town square to take part in a traditional Guozhuang dance, a communal circle dance that reflects centuries of Tibetan heritage and collective joy. (B,L)

Overnight – Songtsam Shangri-La Linka or similar

Day 13

14th April 2026 Shangri-La to Kunming

After breakfast, transfer to the station for your high-speed train journey from Shangri-La to Kunming. The six-hour ride gradually descends from the Tibetan Plateau to the gentler elevations of central Yunnan, offering a window into the province’s diverse landscapes. On arrival in Kunming, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city at your own pace. (B)

Overnight –

Day 14

15th April 2026 Kunming

Spend today exploring the cultural and natural highlights of Kunming, a city long celebrated for its pleasant climate and ethnic diversity. Begin with a visit to Xishan Mountain, also known as the Western Hills. Walk along the winding cliffside paths to reach the Dragon Gate, a series of grottoes and pavilions carved directly into the mountainside overlooking Dianchi Lake. The panoramic views from this sacred Taoist site are among the most striking in Kunming.

Continue to the Dounan Flower Market, the largest fresh flower trading hub in Asia. This vibrant market is a riot of colour and fragrance, showcasing the region’s extraordinary biodiversity and Kunming’s reputation as China’s “Spring City.”

Later, visit Yuantong Temple, one of Yunnan’s oldest and most active Buddhist temples. Dating back over 1,200 years, the temple is unique for its sunken courtyard design and blend of architectural styles, reflecting the fusion of Han, Tibetan, and Southeast Asian influences.

This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner focussing on ethnic minority dishes at the beautiful Cui Fu restaurant. (B,D)
