Emilia-Romagna ─ the most exciting region in Italy for me. If you are looking for culinary and cultural delights, this is the place to be, as the region has an enormous wealth of treasures in this regard. We will see Romanesque and Gothic works of art, enjoy the wistful beauty of the Renaissance and be impressed by the culinary diversity. Come with me on a wonderful journey and you will understand my enthusiasm for the region. Your Kristina Bake

Journey to Bologna

Boarding passes ready? Then you're ready to go. You fly or take the train to Bologna. The lively capital of the Emilia Romagna region is nicknamed "la dotta", the scholar, because it is home to the oldest university in Europe. If time permits, you are welcome to have a look around. We get to know each other over dinner and get in the mood for the coming days. (A)
Today we spend a whole day in Bologna, the capital of Emilia Romagna. Via the longest arcades of any European city (did you know that?) we reach Piazza Maggiore and its palaces, passing the Basilica of San Petronio and Piazza della Mercanzia with its two emblematic towers, Asinelli and Garisenda. We remember that Bologna is home to the oldest university in Europe, visit the Santo Domenico complex and see the former monastery district of Santo Stefano. We then spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing. Take a look around, enjoy an aperitivo and "la dolce vita", as this is simply part of everyday life in Italy. (F)
An excursion into (late) antiquity: Ravenna invites us to visit. We start with a highlight and stop at the Byzantine church of Sant'Apollinare in Classe to be amazed by the fantastic wall mosaics. We then reach the center of Ravenna. There we admire Roman and Byzantine relics and early Christian mosaics in the main western Roman residence and see, for example, the churches of San Vitale and Sant'Apollinare Nuovo as well as the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. Before we leave Ravenna, there is still time for dolci and a cappuccino. Because of course this is also Italy ─ enjoyment, even with coffee and cake. 180 km (F)
We have a lot to discover on the way to Modena. And to taste: the tradition of vinegar production is closely linked to the region around Modena. We taste different varieties of this specialty ─ interesting taste experiences guaranteed. In Modena itself, the cathedral once again boasts magnificent art, for example the stone carvings of the 12th century sculptor Wiligelmo. We move on and see the Palazzo Ducale, which is now the seat of the military academy. In the afternoon we return to Bologna. 125 km (F)
Let's get to know Parma better. And a man named Antonio da Correggio, who left his mark all over the city at the turn of the 16th century. He decorated the dome of the cathedral with monumental frescoes, an interesting contrast to the Romanesque sculptures by Benedetto Antelami. After the lunch break, we devote ourselves to the fantastic frescoes by Coreggio and Parmigianino in two other sacred buildings. A stroll through the old town in the afternoon - this is aperitivo time in Italy. Let's immerse ourselves in Italian life! 210 km (F)
In the morning, everything revolves around the traditional cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano. Of course, we also learn how it is made and taste its incomparable flavor. And what else does Parma stand for for many Germans? That's right, ham. So at lunchtime, we visit the city's ham museum and get to know the finest cold cuts and sausages at a local producer in Langhirano: Parma ham, culatello, salame di felino. In Torrechiara, we visit the fantastically preserved 15th century castle, which contains both medieval and Renaissance elements. Do we remember Benedetto Antelami? We meet him, or rather his art, again in Fidenza. Little is known about his life, but his ingenious works from the late 12th century have survived. In the cathedral of Fidenza we see his artistic work for ourselves. 290 km (F, A)
The whole day belongs to Ferrara. We reach the city quickly and without traffic jams by train. It is inextricably linked with the famous Este family. The dynasty ruled a duchy from Ferrara for more than 300 years. But Ferrara also impresses in other ways: we see the Romanesque cathedral and the Addizione Erculea with the Palazzo dei Diamanti, whose name comes from the façade decorated with diamond motifs. Let's enjoy the lunchtime peace and quiet in Ferrara. In the afternoon, we will have some time to explore on our own before returning to Bologna by train. Over dinner together in Bologna, we discuss our personal highlights of the last few days. 120 km (F, A)
A wonderful week in a beautiful region of Italy comes to an end. From the train station or airport in Bologna you start your journey home. (F) Timetable, flight schedule, hotel and program are expressly subject to change. (F=breakfast, A=dinner)
