Colors, Culture & Canyons: A Journey through Salta and Jujuy

After breakfast, we begin our journey south from Salta along Route 68, passing through the lush Lerma Valley and its charming historic towns. As we move forward, the landscape begins to change dramatically until we reach the stunning Quebrada de las Conchas (Shell’s Gorge), where millions of years of wind and water erosion have sculpted fascinating rock formations like The Amphitheater, The Devil’s Throat, The Toad, and The Castles.

We continue toward Cafayate, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of the Calchaquí Valleys, known for its high-altitude vineyards and unique microclimate. Upon arrival, we visit a local winery to learn about the region’s winemaking traditions and enjoy a tasting of Torrontés, the signature white wine of northwest Argentina, praised for its floral aroma and refreshing character.

After some free time for lunch and to explore the town at your leisure, we transfer to our accommodation in Cafayate to rest and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

After breakfast, the morning is free to enjoy Cafayate at your own pace. You may choose to explore its quaint streets, visit a local crafts market, or simply relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere of the town.

In the early afternoon, we begin our return journey to Salta, once again traveling through the spectacular Quebrada de las Conchas, where the colorful rock formations offer a new perspective in the afternoon light. As we leave the canyon behind, we pass through the fertile Lerma Valley before arriving back in the city.

After an early breakfast, we begin an unforgettable day traveling through some of the most stunning landscapes in northwest Argentina. Our route runs parallel to the famous Train to the Clouds, following the path through the Quebrada del Toro, with its dramatic canyons and rugged mountain scenery.

We continue ascending into the high Andes until we reach the remote village of San Antonio de los Cobres, located at an impressive 4,080 meters above sea level. Here, we take a break to enjoy lunch and taste some traditional dishes from the region.

After lunch, we hit Route 40 and cross into the dazzling Salinas Grandes, one of Argentina’s most impressive salt flats, located right on the border between the provinces of Salta and Jujuy. The vast white expanse creates an almost surreal backdrop – perfect for unforgettable photos.

We then begin our descent via the Cuesta de Lipán, a winding mountain road with breathtaking views and, if we're lucky, sightings of condors gliding overhead.

By late afternoon, we arrive in the charming village of Purmamarca, nestled at the foot of the famous Hill of Seven Colors, where we will spend the night.

Today is a free day to enjoy the peaceful charm of Purmamarca at your own pace. In the morning, we suggest taking a walk along the scenic Paseo de los Colorados, a short trail that loops behind the Hill of Seven Colors and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

In the afternoon, you may choose to visit the nearby town of Tilcara, located just 20 minutes away. There, you can explore the Pucará de Tilcara, an ancient pre-Inca fortress, and wander through the lively town center with its handicraft markets, cafés, and museums.

This flexible day is perfect for connecting with the natural and cultural beauty of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

After breakfast, we check out and take our belongings with us as we continue our journey through the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Our destination today is Humahuaca, where we’ll visit one of the region’s most stunning natural landmarks: the Serranía del Hornocal, also known as the 14-colored mountain. From the viewpoint, we’ll take in the vast, multicolored hills that stretch across the horizon – a geological wonder that offers a deeper understanding of the region’s unique landscape and natural history.

The panoramic views from Hornocal are simply breathtaking, making it a highlight of any trip to northern Argentina.

After visiting the viewpoint, we return to the town of Humahuaca, where we check in to our accommodation and enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.

Today, we travel deep into the heart of the Iruya Valley, a remote region where time seems to stand still. This full-day excursion takes us through a striking transition zone between the high desert and the lush mountain jungle. Along the way, we cross mountain passes reaching up to 4,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes.

We pass through the High Valleys, where ancient communities learned to thrive by building terraced fields on the mountain slopes, using spring water from the hilltops for irrigation. These millennia-old agricultural traditions are still in use today, offering a glimpse into a way of life that remains deeply rooted in the land.

Our destination is the picturesque town of Iruya, nestled in the heart of the mountains. Its cobbled streets, colonial-style houses, and breathtaking setting make it one of the most magical places in northern Argentina.

This unforgettable journey covers approximately 240 kilometers round trip, with departure around 9 a.m. and return to Humahuaca by 6 p.m.

At the scheduled time, a transfer will pick us up to begin our journey back to the city of Salta, retracing our path through the stunning landscapes of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

The city of Salta truly deserves a full day to be explored. You can stroll through its charming colonial streets, visit the impressive Cathedral and museums. 

If you’re up for a day trip, we highly recommend visiting the picturesque town of Cachi, located in the heart of the Calchaquí Valleys. The road there is an adventure in itself, with breathtaking views along Cuesta del Obispo and the Parque Nacional Los Cardones. Once in Cachi, you’ll discover cobblestone streets, adobe houses, and a tranquil atmosphere that perfectly reflects the soul of northwest Argentina.
