Visit its two largest cities of Christchurch and Dunedin, Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook National Park, the gateway to Fiordland National Park, Te Anau. Then Queenstown's excitement and adventure before heading north to the unique West Coast Glacier region. Finally, cross the Southern Alps on board the world-famous Tranz Alpine Scenic Train back to Christchurch. A fitting end to your 'taste of the south'. Day 1

Arrive into Christchurch City also known as the 'Garden City'

Private transfer Christchurch airport to your accommodation

On arrival, you will be met by a private driver and delivered to your Christchurch accommodation.


Welcome to Christchurch City

Christchurch, New Zealand's garden city is steadily being transformed into a vibrant urban destination. Encompassing a large green belt, it is known for its wide tree lined avenues and lush gardens. A great way to explore is to take the double-decker hop on/hop off bus for an easy way to see the sights - or ride a historic tram across town to the renowned botanic gardens and the unique cardboard Transitional Cathedral.

Day 2

Collect your rental car this morning, then you'll enjoy a scenic drive through Canterbury and the MacKenzie Country

Christchurch to Mt. Cook National Park

Today you'll drive through the heart of the South Island, crossing the vast Canterbury plains. Catch your breath in Geraldine before continuing through Fairlie. Ascending Burkes pass you'll come to the picturesque lakeside town of Tekapo.

Follow the road and take in the view of Aoraki Mt Cook (New Zealand's tallest mountain) from the shores of Lake Pukaki, known for its glacier fed turquoise blue color. Continue along the lake to your final destination Mt Cook Village. Please note there are no food or shops at Mount Cook you will need to stock up prior to arriving in Mount Cook if you wish to self cater.

Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre

A tribute to New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary - humanitarian, ambassador and one of the world's greatest explorers - the centre showcases the Aoraki Mount Cook region and its people within a comprehensive museum as well as a 126-seat custom-designed theatre and Digital Dome Planetarium.

Day 3

Head across the Waitaki valley to the east coast and south to Dunedin

Mt. Cook National Park to Dunedin

Today you'll leave Mt Cook National Park and travel past Twizel, one of the locations for the Lord of the Rings films. Go through Omarama - gliding capital of New Zealand - but be sure to stop at The Wrinkly Ram, a great local cafe also offering sheep shearing demonstrations. Driving through the Waitaki Valley follow the hydro power generating system towards the east coast.


Stretch your legs in Oamaru, known for its white stone buildings constructed with the local Oamaru Stone. If you were a little late off the mark this morning you may get the chance to see the blue penguins come ashore at dusk.

Continue south down the coast to Moeraki, and take a detour towards the beach to see the Moeraki Boulders, a unique geological feature well worth a look. As you arrive in Dunedin, take in the city’s Edwardian and Scottish heritage reflected in the buildings around the city centre - The Octagon.

Day 4

Drive through rich farmland heading west to Queenstown

Dunedin to Queenstown

This drive takes you through the heart of the historical Otago Goldfields . The townships of Lawrence, Roxburgh and Alexandra - once booming mining towns in the late 1800's gold rush - now sleepy sun-traps bearing the little resemblance to their bustling past. However, some buildings do remain as do the original shafts and workings. In more recent times Alexandra has become the 'stone fruit capital' of New Zealand -  with the ideal climate for the trees. It is also a great place to buy some of the local produce. The road follows the South Island's longest river, the Clutha River, and at Clyde you will see one of the largest hydro power stations harnessing its energy before passing through the Gibbston Wine Valley to arrive at your destination today, Queenstown.

Day 5

Today experience the thrilling Shotover Jet before a sumptuous Kiwi BBQ at Walter Peak

Queenstown

Although celebrated as New Zealand's ‘adventure capital’ Queenstown offers far more than a fast paced action-packed holiday. Settled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath a soaring panorama of the Remarkables Mountain Range, this alpine town is surrounded by a plethora of historic, gastronomic and scenic wonders.


Shotover Jet Boat Adventure

Riding the iconic ‘Big Red’ Jet Boat through the narrow Shotover Canyon is an exhilarating experience not to be missed.  Your skilled jet boat driver pushes the boat to 85 kph, skimming across shallow water and past towering canyon walls.  This 25 minute white water ride includes 360 degree spins and maximum thrills.


TSS Earnslaw cruise to Walter Peak including gourmet BBQ dinner and a farm tour 

Go back in time on this return trip to Walter Peak High Country Farm aboard the historic TSS Earnslaw Steamship. You'll be greeted off the boat and guided through beautiful lakeside gardens to the charming homestead.


Here you'll enjoy a gourmet BBQ dinner which your chef will prepare in front of you. The seasonal menu includes an expansive array of local produce, including succulent meats cooked on the outdoor rotisserie and a selection of delicious vegetables and salads. Finish your meal with an irresistible dessert, New Zealand cheeses and freshly brewed tea and coffee. After dinner, an entertaining and informative demonstration gives you a glimpse of life in the high country. 

Day 6

Cross New Zealand's highest sealed road to Wanaka and onto the West Coast

Queenstown to Franz Josef Glacier (via Wanaka)

From Queenstown you'll cross the Crown Range - the highest sealed road in New Zealand - to arrive in the Alpine town of Wanaka, gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park. Skirting the shores of both Lake Wanaka and Hawea, you will enter the small town of Makarora. Stop at Blue Pools for a 1 hour return walk through native beech forest to a glacier-fed swimming hole. Continue on through the remote seaside settlement of Haast before heading up the wild West Coast - a 600 km stretch of bush and native rainforest. Fox Glacier welcomes you first, then comes your destination for the night - Franz Josef township.

Day 7

Head north take the Tranz Alpine train to Christchurch

Franz Josef to Greymouth Train Station

Today you’ll head north through the historic gold mining region of Hokitika. Known for its Greenstone (Pounamu) this seaside town has a rich history dating back to the 1860’s. Head to the coast and take in the endless sea-views or pick up a souvenir at one of the many craft shops. Continue on to Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast and the starting point for the next leg of your journey - the Tranz Alpine Scenic Train. Drop your rental car at the Greymouth Train Station depot located inside the train station building before boarding your train to Christchurch.


TranzAlpine Scenic Train: Greymouth to Christchurch

Considered one of the world's great train journeys, the TranzAlpine Scenic Train takes you from Greymouth to Christchurch. You'll travel across the South Island from the west to the east coast through Arthur's Pass National Park. From the comfort of your carriage see lush beech forest, deep river valleys and the spectacular peaks of the Southern Alps. Descend to the windswept Canterbury Plains before arriving in the city of Christchurch.


Private Transfer Christchurch Train Station to Accommodation

On arrival into the Christchurch train station you will be met by a private transfer driver and taken to your accommodation.

Day 8

Depart Christchurch today

Private transfer to Christchurch airport

Your private transfer will collect you from your accommodation and transfer you to Christchurch Airport in time for your departing flight.

60-21 days prior to travel: 55% Tour Total Cost is forfeited

20- 8 days prior to travel 70% Tour Total Cost is forfeited

7 days or less prior to travel 100% forfeited


T&Cs as of 22nd September 2020: 

If cancelled more than 45 days prior to travel: Loss of deposit.

If cancelled 44-21 days prior to travel: 55% of Total Tour Cost non-refundable

If cancelled 20-8 days prior to travel: 70% of Total Tour Cost non-refundable

If cancelled 7 days or less prior to travel: 100% of Total Tour Cost forfeited 

T&Cs: 

A non-refundable deposit of 20% of the tour cost or NZ$250 per person, whichever is greater, is required to secure your booking. Any prepaid items (such as flights) will also need to be paid at time of booking.

For tours booked to depart within 45 days full payment is required at the time of booking.

Cancellation up to 45 days prior to departure:

If you cancel your tour at any time prior to 45 days before your tour commencement the deposit portion is non-refundable as are any additional fees collected.

Cancellation 45 - 21 days prior your tour commencement date:

If you cancel your tour 60-21 days prior to your tour commencement date a cancellation fee of 35% of the total tour reservation value plus any cancellation fees applied by other providers such as accommodation, car rental and other activities. Plus the above deposit values

Cancellation 20 - 8 days prior your tour commencement date:

If you cancel your tour 20-8 days prior to your tour commencement date the cancellation fee will be 70% of the total tour reservation value, plus any cancellation fees applied by third-party providers that are subject to cancellation terms.

Cancellation 7 days or less prior your tour commencement date:

If you cancel your tour 7 days or less prior to your tour commencement date a cancellation fee of 100% of the total tour reservation applies.

NOTE: while we understand that cancellations may at times be unavoidable we highly recommend you purchase adequate travel insurance to cover you for this.
