After picking the agreed meeting point in Bangkok early, drive to the former capital of Ayutthaya and visit the ruins of this once vast island city, which was largely destroyed by an invading army 250 years ago. Today, the haunting ruins hint at its former glory, as seen at temples such as Wat Yai Chaimongkhon, Wat Phanan Choeng and Wat Mahathat - where the roots of trees have engulfed the head of a Buddha. Hop on a traditional longtail boat and enjoy a scenic cruise around the island, seeing the ruins of the city from a different perspective. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Phitsanulok to check in at the hotel. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure Overnight stay in Phitsanulok.

PHITSANULOK - LAMPANG - CHIANG MAI (350 km - 5 uur)

After breakfast at the hotel, take the road towards Lampang. On arrival, visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang. This large Lanna-style temple is prominently located on a hill surrounded by walls. Climb the Naga Stairs and explore the complex with seven buildings and a sacred tree. Admire the bronze Buddha statue in the ordination hall and the relic of Buddha in the golden chedi. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Chiang Mai, popularly known as the 'Rose of the North'. Check in on arrival and the rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps explore the city at your own pace or enjoy a relaxing Thai massage (not included in the price). In the evening, take a stroll around the bustling night bazaar or enjoy an evening sampling a khantoke dinner, a traditional northern Thai feast combined with a selection of traditional cultural performances (optional, not included). Overnight stay in Chiang Mai.

CHIANG MAI (80 km - 2 uur)

After breakfast at the hotel, visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of the most revered temples in the country. This sacred place is located on a hilltop from where you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over the city. To reach the temple, you have to climb a 309-step Naga staircase. Alternatively, you can take the cable car (included in the price) to reach the temple. This spiritual sojourn is followed by a visit to the shopper's paradise that is the famous San Kamphaeng Road, a 10 km stretch of road flanked by stores selling locally made goods such as pottery, silverware, lacquerware, handmade saapa paper, sculptures, jewelry, woodcarvings and silk products. In some stores you can even watch the artisans at work. Look out for the celadon ceramics and silverware, both of which are usually of excellent quality. After a local lunch at a local restaurant, return to the hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure. Overnight stay in Chiang Mai.

CHIANG MAI - LAMPHUN - SUKHOTHAI (370 km - 5 uur)

After breakfast at the hotel, bid farewell to Chiang Mai and drive to Lamphun, home to one of the most important temples in the north, the thousand-year-old Wat Phra That Hariphunchai. Visit the temple and admire the Buddha statues and impressive stupas, including a 46-meter-high golden Lanna-style chedi and a 21-meter-high Haripunchai-style chedi. Turn onto the road again and head south to Sukhothai Historical Park, which covers the ruins of the first capital of Siam. Sukhothai was founded in the 13th century and means 'dawn of happiness'. It proved to be the beginning of a golden age for Thai culture under the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, who is credited with the creation of the Thai alphabet. The historical park contains the ruins of almost 200 buildings, including dozens of temples. The complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is divided between the ruins inside the walls and moat and those outside. Overnight stay in Sukhothai.

SUKHOTHAI - LOPBURI - VERTREK BANGKOK (480 km - 7 uur)

After breakfast at the hotel, you leave Sukhothai for Lopburi. This historic town is famous for the macaque troops that roam the streets as if it were the jungle. Visit the ruins of the ancient Khmer temple of Phra Prang Sam Yot and the adjacent Brahman shrine of San Phra Kan, known as the 'Monkey Temple'. Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant en route and continue to Bangkok where you will be transferred to your hotel. Breakfast and lunch are included in the price
