Renaissance Monument

Museum van Afrikaanse Beschaving Markten

Na het ontbijt begin je aan een stadstour door Dakar en omgeving. Begin met een bezoek aan het Afrika Renaissance Monument, een 164 voet hoog standbeeld dat in 2010 werd onthuld, dat over Dakar uitkijkt en hoger is dan het Vrijheidsbeeld. Dit ooit controversiële bronzen standbeeld is nu een populaire attractie, met een wijzende man, vrouw en kind als symbool voor hernieuwde Afrikaanse hoop. De kleding van de vrouw is aangepast naar een meer bescheiden lengte, om culturele gevoeligheden weer te geven.

Bezoek vervolgens Independence Place, het hart van Dakar, waar je langs het presidentiële paleis en de belangrijkste kathedraal komt. Ga vervolgens naar het Museum van de Zwarte Beschaving, een enorm complex van vier verdiepingen dat de droom van de eerste president van Senegal, Leopold Sedar Senghor, vervult. Het museum schetst de oudste beschavingen van Afrika tot de rest van de wereld, met architectonische inspiratie uit impluvium hutten gevonden in Casamance.

Vertrek voor een boottocht van 20 minuten naar het charmante maar beruchte Goree Island, dat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. Verken de rustige straten met pastelkleurige gebouwen uit het koloniale tijdperk. Een van de meest opvallende gebouwen hier is het House of Slaves, dat de tragische geschiedenis van Goree documenteert. Bekijk de "Door of No Return", waar miljoenen doorheen gingen op weg naar de slavernij.


De tour omvat een bezoek aan het etnografisch museum en een lezing over de geschiedenis van Goree. Je kunt ook een bezoek brengen aan MariamaBâ, de Elite High School voor meisjes, genoemd naar de beroemde Senegalese schrijfster. De school werd in 1977 opgericht door Leopold Sedar Senghor, de eerste president van Senegal, en is opgedragen aan MariamaBâ, een schrijfster en feministe die streed voor vrouwenrechten in Senegal. De school laat elk jaar 50 best presterende vrouwelijke studenten uit heel Senegal toe, die worden geselecteerd op basis van hun prestaties in het toelatingsexamen voor de nationale middelbare school.


Na de lunch keer je terug naar Dakar en breng je een bezoek aan het Pink Lake, een zeldzaam natuurfenomeen dat bekend staat om zijn roze kleur die wordt veroorzaakt door micro-organismen en een hoge zoutconcentratie. Interactie met vrouwen die zout oogsten en een bezoek aan een nabijgelegen Fulani dorp. Ga tot slot op tijd door naar Saly om 's avonds te zwemmen in de oceaan.

SALY - BANDIA - SALY

Rijd naar Bandia Park, waar je talrijke inheemse diersoorten van Senegal tegenkomt, waaronder buffels, antilopen, impala gazellen, apen, schildpadden en krokodillen, maar ook witte neushoorns, kudu's, elanden, kaapse elanden, giraffen, struisvogels en zebra's. Stop bij de krokodillenpoel, waar dieren komen drinken en buffels zich wentelen in de modder. Je zult ook talloze vogelsoorten zien, waaronder kleine neushoornvogels, blauwe reigers, arenden, merels en ijsvogels. Keer op tijd terug naar het hotel voor een korte excursie op de Somone Lagoon om het prachtige landschap te bewonderen en zeldzame riviervogels te spotten. Deze avond is er gelegenheid om te zwemmen en andere strandactiviteiten te doen.

The first visit will be to the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, honoring the life of the prominent Pan-Africanist who chose to live and work in Ghana. We continue to Independence Square, where you will see the enclosed flame of African Liberation, lit by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961. Next, visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the final resting place of Ghana’s first president. Set in attractive gardens, there is an adjoining museum that contains photos, artifacts, and insight into Dr. Nkrumah’s life. Hoogtepunten: Teshie Fancy Coffin Shop


Na het ontbijt checken we uit bij ons hotel en gaan we verder oostwaarts naar Akosombo. Onderweg bezoeken we de Teshie Casket/Coffin Shop waar uniek ontworpen kisten worden gemaakt die het geloof van de mensen in het leven na de dood weerspiegelen. De winkel werd in de jaren 1950 bijna per ongeluk gestart door Seth Kane Kwei. Hij maakte draagstoelen, ook wel nesten of Sedan Chairs genoemd, die worden gebruikt om stamhoofden te vervoeren op traditionele festivals. Eén stamhoofd, die een draagstoel in de vorm van een cacaoboon had besteld, stierf onverwacht voor het festival, dus werd hij in de draagstoel begraven.


Kort daarna stierf zijn oma, die haar eerste overzeese vliegreis had gepland, en ook zij werd begraven in een kist in de vorm van een vliegtuig. "De derde fantasiekist was voor een visser die begraven werd in een kano. Zo ontstond de industrie van de mooie doodskisten. Rijd verder naar Kumasi en kom laat in de middag aan; transfer naar het hotel en check in.

KUMASI

Hoogtepunten: 3 ambachtelijke dorpen van het Ashanti-rijk


Geniet vandaag van een schilderachtige rit door verschillende dorpen met Ashanti-huizen in culturele stijl op het omringende weelderige platteland, dat een scherp contrast vormt met de hedendaagse stad Kumasi. Rijd door Ejisu, het huis van Nana Yaa Asantewaa, de koningin-moeder van Ejisu die in 1900 vrouwelijke Ashanti-krijgers aanvoerde in een gevecht tegen de Britten. Rijd verder en bezoek de drie ambachtelijke dorpen. Adanwomase is ons eerste ambachtsdorp waar we zien hoe het beroemde Kente-doek met de hand wordt gemaakt op weefgetouwen in een eeuwenoude traditie die al generaties lang wordt doorgegeven. Bekijk de Kente patronen die elk een betekenis hebben. Je krijgt de gelegenheid om aankopen te doen. We kunnen een beleefdheidsbezoek brengen aan het opperhoofd van deze gemeenschap te midden van drummen en dansen of hun cacaoplantages bekijken (moet van tevoren worden geregeld). We gaan verder naar het dorp Ntonso waar ambachtslieden met de hand patronen op een katoenen doek stempelen om Adinkra textiel te maken. Zwart-op-zwart en zwart-op-rood Adinkra textiel wordt gedragen bij begrafenissen en andere plechtige gelegenheden; leer hoe de zwarte verfstof in het dorp wordt gemaakt van de bast van bomen en maak je eigen Adinkra sjerp om mee naar huis te nemen. Je kunt ook grote stukken Adinkra doek kopen die in het dorp met de hand zijn gemaakt.


Ons laatste dorp is het houtsnijdorp Ahwiaa, bekend om de getalenteerde ambachtslieden die koninklijke krukjes, wandelstokken en vruchtbaarheidspoppen van hout maken; je kunt er allerlei handgesneden voorwerpen kopen. We rijden verder naar Central Kumasi, dat een hele verzameling Britse koloniale gebouwen heeft en het hart vormt van de Ashanti-cultuur. We genieten van een rit door de stad met monumenten gewijd aan de nagedachtenis van het grote Ashanti-volk op weg naar een bezoek aan de Okomfo Anokye zwaardplaats, een belangrijk symbool van Ashanti-eenheid dat de plek markeert waar de gouden kruk "uit de hemel neerdaalde" en al meer dan 300 jaar op zijn plaats staat. Volgens de legende zou het Ashanti-koninkrijk instorten als het zwaard ooit zou worden verwijderd. Keer vroeg in de avond terug naar je hotel.

Assin Manso Slavenrivier

Wandeling door Elmina Township

Vandaag vertrekken we voor nog een avontuur in de kustgebieden van Ghana - Elmina & Cape Coast. Onderweg stoppen we bij Assin Manso, de begraafplaats van twee voormalige slaven uit de VS en Jamaica wier stoffelijke resten in augustus 1998 werden herbegraven tijdens Ghana's eerste Emancipatiedag. Een bezoek aan "de Slavenrivier" of "Donkor Nsuo" biedt de kans om de plek te zien waar gevangen Afrikanen werden gewassen voordat ze werden opgesloten in de Slavenkastelen in afwachting van verscheping naar Amerika en het Caribisch gebied.

Geniet deze avond van de vele kleurrijke vissersboten die hun dagelijkse vangst in de haven brengen en maak van de gelegenheid gebruik om je te mengen onder de plaatselijke bevolking op de nabijgelegen markt. Op korte afstand van de markt bezoeken we de botenbouwers, die nog steeds kleurrijke vissersboten bouwen met behulp van traditioneel gereedschap en eeuwenoude methoden. Vandaag bezoeken we het kasteel van Cape Coast, dat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. Het kasteel is een tot nadenken stemmend monument voor een schrijnende periode in de geschiedenis van de regio. Je maakt een emotionele reis door het kasteel dat meer tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen vasthield dan enig ander in de regio, terwijl je de kerkers en de beruchte „Deur of no return” bekijkt. Er is een belangrijk historisch museum binnen, dat de geschiedenis van het kasteel en van Cape Coast zelf verklaart. After breakfast, you will check out of your hotel for a visit to the Kakum National Park, Ghana’s most famous park. Take a brief walking tour on the forest floor where you will learn how our ancestors lived in the forest. See birds, butterflies and perhaps catch a glimpse of the forests of over 40 species of mammals including monkeys and the reclusive forest elephant.

Proceed to the canopy walk. Kakum is home to Africa’s only aerial walkway through the tree canopy, 1000-foot-long and even-bridge walkway with viewing platforms that reach heights over 150 feet above the ground. Arrive in Accra late afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

confirm a reservation the following deposit and final payment terms must be strictly adhered to

Tour Deposit & Final Payment

Deposit Due Per Person is $500 or 25% of tour cost, whichever is greater. We reserve the right to

request additional deposits as required by hotels and suppliers for peak periods such (but not

limited to) Christmas, New Year, Easter, and other holidays. Final Payments are due 45 days

before Tour begins. For reservations received within 45 days of commencement of services, the

entire amount is to be submitted at the time of confirmation. Reservations received within 45 days

of the start of the tour may be subject to a non-refundable rush-booking fee of no less than $125

per person to cover additional expenses incurred to expedite booking.

Cancellation Terms

Continent Tours’ cancellation policy is applied as follows:

 Cancellations made 45 days or more prior to the start of the tour will be charged a

cancellation fee of 15% of tour cost with a minimum payment of $ 400 per traveler.

 Cancellations made 44 to 30 days prior to the start of the tour will be charged a cancellation

fee of 20% of the tour cost with a minimum payment of $475 per traveler.

 Cancellations made 29 to 17 days prior to the tour start date will be charged a cancellation

fee of 25% of the tour cost with a minimum payment of $ 700 per traveler.

 Cancellations made 16 days or less prior to the tour start date will be charged a cancellation

fee of 100% of tour cost, No Refund.

 Trip Cancellation Insurance Is Recommended

Domestic flight tickets are non-refundable when alternate (land) arrangements are made.

No-shows, late arrivals, voluntary changes, or cancellations by travelers of tour days or services

during a tour are non-refundable. Cancellation insurance is recommended.

Prior to the start of the tour, Continent Tours reserves the right to cancel a tour and will provide a

full refund of all payments. Continent Tours has never canceled a tour but would do so at its sole 

discretion should travelers’ safety be of concern. Continent Tours is not responsible for expenses

incurred by travelers in preparing for a trip that is eventually canceled.

Once travelers are at the destination in Africa, Continent Tours will provide comparable alternate

tour arrangements, if the cancellation of a particular tour is deemed necessary. Should travelers

elect not to accept these alternate arrangements, this will constitute voluntary refusal of services,

and no refunds will be given. Pro-rata refunds will be made if alternate arrangements are not

comparable to the original tour services. Please note: Domestic flights may be replaced by ground

transportation if the domestic flight schedule renders flights impossible within the constraints of a

tour and/or the tour dates; in this case, the missed flights are non-refundable as the ticket price will

be used to make alternate land arrangements.

Insurance

Travel insurance while not mandatory is highly recommended and is not included in the tour price.

Tour Prices

Continent Tours prices are stated in U.S. Dollars (USD) and are subject to change until a tour

deposit is received.

Prices do not include international travel to/from Africa, passport fees, entry visa fees, excess

baggage charges, airport taxes, immunizations or other medical fees, non-specified meals,

alcoholic or other beverages, insurance, tips for tour staff, laundry, and other personal expenses.

Responsibilities

It is Continent Tours’ responsibility to provide the services listed with each tour itinerary.

Continent Tours includes this information with every price quote.

All lodging is double occupancy, bed & breakfast; including private baths. Comparable hotel

substitutes will be provided if planned accommodations are not available. For single occupancy, a

single supplement will be applied. Day rooms are not included unless specified. Hotel check-in

and check-out times are 2:00 Pm (1400 hours) and 12 noon (1200 hours).

Continent Tours reserves the right to make itinerary modifications or to change hotels or other tour

components, if these are deemed necessary or advisable for the continuation of the tour, for safety

and security reasons, or to prevent delays that would be detrimental to the tour or its members.

Continent Tours is not responsible for delays or consequences of any delays due to circumstances

beyond Continent Tours’ control. Continent Tours will make every effort to provide alternate and

comparable services if changes are made.

Scheduled domestic flights are sometimes postponed or canceled; Continent Tours is not

responsible for these inconveniences and will, where possible, use the ticket price of missed

domestic flights to make land arrangements. If clients opt to refuse land arrangements Continent

Tours will reimburse the cost of the air tickets when these amounts are refunded to Continent Tours

by the air carrier.

All luggage should have sturdy identification tags and should always be locked. Continent Tours

personnel will assist travelers with lost luggage formalities at the airport. Continent Tours will also

make every effort to forward lost luggage to its owner during the tour; any costs incurred in

forwarding luggage are the responsibility of the traveler. Please note: baggage limits on domestic

flights vary but are usually limited to one item of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and one carry-on bag.

Additional services required as a result of international flight schedule changes, illness, or

emergencies are the responsibility of the traveler. Continent Tours personnel will do endeavor to

assist travelers who may need to make new flight arrangements. This is done as a courtesy and

implies no responsibility on the part of Continent Tours to find or make new arrangements. The

costs or penalties for any such arrangements are the sole responsibility of the traveler.

Continent Tours’ guide has the ultimate recourse of removing a traveler from a tour at any time, if

that person’s continued presence is deemed harmful to him/herself or others, or if it adversely

affects the quality of the tour and/or the enjoyment of the group. A pro-rata refund will be made

for missed activities, contingent upon refunds provided by suppliers.

Travelers must procure their own passport, entry visa(s), and health documents.

Travelers agree to comply with local laws and regulations and to respect cultural practices

observed during the tour. Travelers understand that living conditions and practices in West Africa

and Central Africa may not be the same as in their home countries.

Travelers are expected to be on time for all tour activities; there are no refunds for missed activities.

If travelers miss any flights or other scheduled departures, the responsibility and the cost of

rejoining the tour will be theirs.

Travelers with special needs or disabilities must inform Continent Tours at the time of booking;

failure to disclose in advance any physical or other restrictions, or the need for special

accommodations, will make it impossible to meet those needs. When informed, Continent Tours

will make every effort to accommodate travelers and will inform travelers of local conditions they

will likely encounter.

For their own safety as well as for the smooth operation of their tour, travelers are expected to

follow their Tour Leader/Guide’s requests and instructions; any problems encountered during the

tour should be brought to the guide’s attention immediately, so that the guide may remedy the

situation. If the guide is unable to do so, or you are not satisfied with the remedy, please contact

the Continent Tours office and report the problem.

Tips and gratuities, while not mandatory, are accepted as recognition of quality service by guides,

drivers, restaurant personnel, and others. These tips and gratuities are not covered by tour fees and

are entirely at your discretion. Tips for luggage porters are the responsibility of Continent Tours’
