Tour program

Day 1

Welkom op Corsica

You fly to Bastia and drive to the hotel. In the evening we get to know each other over dinner. Welcome to Corsica! (A)
Our vacation begins in Bastia, the lively port city in the north of the island. We stroll through the narrow streets and across the squares bordered by palm and plane trees and finally reach the old harbor, which is dominated by the two towers of the baroque Saint Jean-Baptiste church and the citadel. We continue along the southern part of Cap Corse, the peninsula that lies like an outstretched index finger in the north of Corsica and gives the island its characteristic shape. We stroll through Erbalunga, one of Corsica's most beautiful and probably most painted villages. Fishermen's houses line the picturesque alleyways and the small harbor, which has been guarded by a Genoese tower since the Middle Ages. In Saint-Florent, we stroll along the lively promenade to the marina before continuing to Calvi in the afternoon. 160 km (F)
We drive along the Corsican north coast towards Balagne, which is considered the garden of Corsica. Gnarled olive trees, figs, palm trees and blossoming citrus plantations accompany us on our way to small, romantic villages that have retained their special, typically Corsican atmosphere and original charm to this day. Strategically located on steep slopes or high up on the mountains, they offered protection from pirates in the Middle Ages. And that's why we enjoy the breathtaking views over the azure Mediterranean today. We return to Calvi. The mighty citadel, which towers over the old town and marina, is impressive. Here you can linger in one of the restaurants and cafés and enjoy the fantastic panorama over the bay. 130 km (F)
Today we turn our attention to the west coast of Corsica. On our journey, we catch sight of the Gulf of Porto with the Calanches of Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We can't get enough of the volcanic rocks with their bizarre shapes and nature's play of colors: blue, green, red. Sea, maquis, a fairytale forest of stone. Along the Gulf of Sagone, past the ancient Greek city of Cargèse, we reach Ajaccio in the evening. What a day! 170 km (F, A)
Today we take a look at the island's capital. With its spacious squares and boulevards and many cafés, Ajaccio is almost sophisticated. Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born here in 1769, is still omnipresent. Not only three heroic monuments and his birthplace commemorate the great Corsican, but squares and boulevards are also named after the emperor and members of his family. We take a look at the Maison Bonaparte. In a small, inconspicuous alley, we find the house where he was born, now a museum. We go inside and learn interesting facts about Napoleon and the history of France. Afterwards, enjoy the city a little more at your leisure. (F)
Our program includes one of the most remarkable historical sites in the Mediterranean: Filitosa. A cult site with impressive menhir statues was found on a hill, which tell of the early settlement of Corsica. After a stop at the Gulf of Valinco, we approach the most Corsican of all Corsican towns: Sartène. High on a hill above the fertile Rizzanese valley is the medieval old town, protected by thick defensive walls, which was built by the Genoese in the 16th century to protect the inhabitants from the Saracens. The cool-looking stone houses still seem to hold many a secret today... We then drive through a gentle landscape until the view opens up to the bay of Roccapina. A dream beach is bordered by a row of rocks that resembles a large reclining lion. 150 km (F)
Now the windswept cliffs of Bonifacio, which drop vertically into the sea, await us. Don't forget your camera, there are countless postcard motifs along the way! But first we have to reach the medieval upper town. From here, we can enjoy the view across to Sardinia or down into the natural harbor that the wind and weather have carved into the chalk cliffs. And then there is the dizzyingly steep "Escalier du Roi d'Aragon", carved into the cliff face. In the afternoon, we drive north over the Col de Bavella, back to the starting point of our journey. 240 km (F, A)
"Au revoir, la Corse!" From Bastia airport you can take your flight home or extend your vacation on the "Island of Beauty" for a few more days. (F) Flight schedule, hotel and program are subject to change. (F=breakfast, A=dinner)
