We head straight to “unearthly” Joshua Tree National Park today! Ride past its namesake trees, count cactus varieties, and maybe spot a jackrabbit or desert bighorn sheep. Marvel at the twisted, spiky trees straight out of a Dr. Seuss illustration at the junction of three of California’s ecosystems: the Colorado Desert, the Mojave Desert, and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. An optional climb is available for those who want some extra altitude and a good view of the Salton Sea. Spend two nights connecting with local history and nature in the desert at the Campbell House Inn – a homestead dating back to 1925 – or 29 Palms Inn.

Get “up close and personal” with the Joshua Tree’s plants, animals, and geology on a relatively easy day hike in the park. Head out from massive Jumbo Rocks past eerie Skull Rock, the Face Rock “mimetolith”, and Split Rock. There’s plenty of time for taking photos today as you admire the views, explore desert washes – look for animal tracks! – cacti and other desert flora. There should be ample time in the afternoon to explore 29 Palms or relax around the pool before dinner. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Keer terug naar Joshua Tree en rijd dan door Box Canyon naar Mekka

Two days is not enough to experience the diversity here, so we return to Joshua Tree once more. Savor a ride out through the south end of the park today. Stop for a walk through one of the most prolific cholla (cactus) gardens in the southwest and pay homage to some truly massive palm trees. Keep an eye out for desert tortoises and wildflowers as you descend out of the park. Continue your epic downhill cruise (check out today‘s stats!) outside the park through beautiful Box Canyon all the way to Mecca. Marvel at the robustly irrigated and diverse agriculture of the Coachella Valley as well as the hyper-salinized Salton Sea, while we shuttle (~1hr) to the Borrego Valley. Spend the next two nights at the Borrego Springs Resort and Spa or the Borrego Valley Inn.

Wandel door de canyons van Anza Borrego State Park

Welcome to Borrego Springs! Artsy, unpretentious, historic, charming, and tiny (pop. 3500), it is the only town in California that is surrounded by a State Park. In 1776, Anza Borrego State Park’s namesake Juan Bautista de Anza led 240 soldiers and colonists (over half were children) along with some 1,000 livestock through this valley on an epic journey northward from Mexico, eventually establishing present-day city of San Francisco. We get acquainted with the area on a couple of relatively short hikes. Play “peek-a-boo” in a relatively small siltstone canyon known as “The Slot.” Explore an oasis in the desert at Borrego Palm Canyon. Listen to the wind rattling the palm leaves while you keep your eyes peeled for the desert bighorn sheep who frequent the area. Stay another night at Borrego Springs Resort and Spa, or the Borrego Valley Inn.

Hike: “The Slot” – 1-2 miles, relatively flat.

Hike: Palm Canyon” – 3 miles and +/- 500ft gain.

Ride Borrego Springs! To the west, steep desert mountains rise against a foreground of fiery ocotillo blossoms. Colorful but formidable badlands guard the way to the Salton Sea to the east. In between, the desert is dotted with the fascinating sculptures of Ricardo Breceda. Admire gorgeous views as you cruise up into the hills on a more difficult route or keep to the flatter valley roads and spend more time viewing sculptures. Shuttle (~1.5hrs) to Palm Springs and enjoy a date milkshake (or another flavor) while we check-in at the Best Western Plus Las Brisas.

Today we cycle through Palm Springs to commune with another palm canyon. Home to the rich and famous of the “Rat Pack” era, the Palm Springs of today boasts the best that urban life has to offer. The Rat Pack may have moved on, but the city’s style has not. Palm Springs is as cool as it gets in the middle of a desert! Check out the retro architecture, sports cars, window shops, sweet cafés, Elvis’ honeymoon hideaway, and a larger-than-life Marilyn Monroe. After lunch we will return you (albeit reluctantly) to the “real world”.

The responsibility of Bicycle Adventures and/or its agents is limited. Bicycle Adventures hereby gives notice that it acts only in the capacity as an agent for the tour participant in all matters, including payment, connected with lodging and meal services, sightseeing tours, and other suppliers of service and transportation, and Bicycle Adventures has no personal liability for payment therefore, either primarily or secondarily, other than as the agent for the tour participant.

In the event that it becomes necessary or advisable for any reason whatsoever to alter the itinerary or arrangements, such alterations shall be made. Bicycle Adventures reserves the right to cancel any tour prior to departure for any reason. In case of such a cancellation, Bicycle Adventures will place recoverable funds into credit on file in the guest's name, to be used toward any future trip of the guest's choice for which space is available. This shall release Bicycle Adventures from any further liability. Bicycle Adventures is specifically not liable for non-refundable airplane tickets and other personal expenses incurred in preparation for a trip that is canceled.

Bicycle Adventures reserves the unilateral right not to accept or retain as a tour participant any person whose condition or general deportment, in Bicycle Adventures' sole judgment, impedes the operation of the tour or affects the rights, welfare, or enjoyment of other participants. Should such a person be required to leave a tour, it will be treated as leaving a tour early per our cancellation policy. Should a traveler be removed from a trip, they will not be refunded any portion of their trip fee even if that portion is unused. They will also be responsible for arranging and paying for all expenses related to returning home and/or changing their travel arrangements. Bicycle Adventures' obligations with respect to any funds received shall be those of a debtor and not a trustee.

There are certain risks and dangers inherent in any form of adventure travel. Bicycle Adventures assumes no responsibility or liability for any claims or damages, for any reason, arising from these risks. Guests are responsible for choosing a trip that suits their abilities, fitness level, and state of health.

A Release, Indemnity Agreement and Assumption of Risk form must be signed by each guest and returned to our office prior to the start of their tour. If the unaltered and signed Release, Indemnity Agreement and Assumption of Risk form is not received in the Bicycle Adventures office when due, Bicycle Adventures has the right to consider that reservation cancelled and resell your space.

Bicycle Adventures reserves the right to cancel your trip and resell your space if your final payment has not been received by the due date. Terms and conditions of any tour may be amended only by an officer of Bicycle Adventures.

Tour prices are per person, in United States dollars, fixed regardless of the number of people on a trip (no tier pricing), fixed regardless of foreign exchange fluctuations, and are the same if you are arriving alone or with others (no single surcharge). Prices include lodging; all meals as indicated in the trip descriptions; drinks and snacks from the van; maps and written route directions; all support vans and trailers as required; taxes; all gratuities to waiters (except for items that you pay for) and baggage handlers; leadership; all maintenance on rental bicycles; all park entrance fees; sea kayaking, rafting, canoe rentals, wildlife cruises, boat rides, snorkeling, horseback riding, and tourist attractions where noted in the trip descriptions; and ferry boat tickets where the ferry ride is part of a day's standard itinerary.

Excluded from the Trip Price are items of a personal nature such as alcoholic beverages, any discretionary gratuities for your trip leaders, excursion boat rides you charter, museum and tourist attractions entrance fees you purchase, food and beverages you purchase, room service charges, some meals where indicated in the trip descriptions, telephone calls you make, laundry, parts to repair your personal bicycle, and repairs to your personal bicycle done in a bicycle shop..

Accommodatie

Door het aantal gasten op elke reis te beperken, vergroten we onze keuzemogelijkheden en kunnen we terecht in een aantal kleinere, bekroonde bed & breakfasts en landelijke herbergen die een grotere groep niet zou kunnen herbergen.

De accommodatie is gebaseerd op twee personen die een kamer met eigen badkamer delen. Als je solo reist op een van onze reizen en je staat ervoor open om een kamer te delen met een andere soloreiziger van hetzelfde geslacht, dan betaal je vooraf 50% van de toeslag voor een eenpersoonskamer. Als we je een kamergenoot kunnen toewijzen, krijg je dat bedrag terug. Je kunt een eigen kamer en bad garanderen als je de volledige toeslag betaalt. Soms bestaat een kamer met twee bedden uit één bed plus een opklapbed of slaapbank. Bel ons kantoor om te zien of dit van toepassing is op de reis en datum die je kiest.

Vervoer

Je bent altijd welkom om mee te rijden in het busje - uitleg is niet nodig. Sommigen willen een lift voor maar een paar kilometer; anderen hebben de hele reis in het busje gereden. Het is jouw vakantie - jij beslist.

We gebruiken een vloot van speciaal bestelde en aangepaste 15-persoonsbusjes. De meeste hebben een zevenliter V-10 motor, een hoge achterasverhouding en een zwaar trekhaakpakket om een busje vol mensen efficiënt te kunnen verplaatsen met een grote aanhanger vol bagage en eten. Elk busje heeft ook professionele fietsenrekken voor zwaar gebruik bovenop een op maat gemaakt, stalen platform op het dak.

Verzekering

Verzekering is niet inbegrepen. Reisverzekering is verplicht voor deze reis. Zorg ervoor dat je voldoende verzekerd bent.

Maaltijden

Alle maaltijden behalve één lunch en één diner zijn inbegrepen in de kosten van je rondreis. Op de dagen dat je alleen moet eten, zijn er voldoende opties op loopafstand van onze locatie.

Bij Bicycle Adventures eten we graag goed. Elke avond eten we samen in het beste restaurant in de omgeving. Als we iedereen een stukje moeten pendelen om bij die speciale plek te komen, dan doen we dat. Bij de meeste restaurants bestel je wat je wilt van het menu. Behalve alcohol is alles inbegrepen, zelfs voorgerechten, salade, soep en dessert. Het ontbijt wordt meestal verzorgd door de hotels en herbergen waar we verblijven, maar als er een plaatselijke plek is die bekend staat om het goede ontbijt, dan vinden we die en word je getrakteerd op een voedzame maaltijd om je dag mee te beginnen. De lunch wordt verzorgd in een staatspark of een soortgelijke schilderachtige omgeving halverwege de rit. Gasten zijn altijd verbaasd over de verscheidenheid en kwaliteit van de lunches die we bereiden. Naast broodbeleg en koude dranken bieden we vers fruit en verse groenten en warme lunches zoals tortellini met pesto of veggie burrito's. Als je de voorkeur geeft aan een bepaald soort eten of drinken, laat het je reisbegeleider dan weten en wij zorgen ervoor dat we precies de juiste lunch bereiden om je energie voor de rest van de dag op peil te houden.

Gedurende de dag zijn water, vruchtensappen, frisdrank, energierepen, fruit en snacks verkrijgbaar in de bus. Een koud biertje uit onze koelbox wacht op het einde van de dag, en je kunt de hoogtepunten van de dag herbeleven tijdens onze wijn- en kaasparty voor het diner.

Onze gidsen zijn geselecteerd en opgeleid voor een ongeëvenaarde persoonlijke service. Hun achtergronden variëren, maar allen delen een liefde voor het buitenleven en, het belangrijkste, een verlangen om mensen te helpen het beste uit hun vakantie te halen. Er zijn verschillende ski-instructeurs, een politiek analist, een Emmy-winnende journalist, en een universiteitsprofessor, onder anderen. Bijna allemaal zijn ze afgestudeerd aan de universiteit.
