Hoogtepunten van Albanië in 6 dagen

Pickup from Tirana International Airport and transfer to the city. 

After arrival we will check in at the hotel, then a walking tour of Tirana. Albania Capital city since 1920. The tour starts from Skanderbeg Square with the mosaics of the National Museum, Et’hem Bey Mosque, the elegant government buildings, Bunkart-2, Fine Arts Gallery, ex-Hotel Dajti, and Rinia Park. Then we walk across “Zhan D'Ark" and “Bulevardi Bajram Curri” boulevards by Lana River’s bridge, (Photo stops) then and we arrive at the ‘Pyramid’. Next is the Prime Minister’s Building (the ex-Communist Party headquarters), and in front of it is the Parliamentary Offices. Beyond Rruga “Ismail Qemali” is the Hotel Rogner Europapark, and a little further the Palace of Congresses and in front of it is the Presidential Building. This building was the Soviet embassy until 1961. At the end of the main boulevard is “Mother Teresa” Square, named to honor the most famous Albanian nun of the 20th century. Around this square we see the Archaeological Museum, the Art Academy and Polytechnic University. This square is a cosmopolitan meeting place. We will pass through the ex-Blok quartier, that was prohibited in communism for the normal citizen, only high ranking officials' families (like Hoxha, etc.) used to live there.

Na het ontbijt gaan we naar Kruja, een van de belangrijkste steden van Albanië vanwege de rol die het speelde in het verzet tegen de Ottomanen. Bezoek het Skanderbeg Museum en kasteel en de oude bazaar. Daarna ga je naar Tirana. Stadstour door Tirana, de hoofdstad van Albanië. After breakfast, the next stop will be in Lezha city. In the ancient pelasgian period it was called Lis (in Roman era Lissus). Visit to its top hill castle where you enjoy the fascinating panorama of the Adriatic Riviera and bronze age ancient city walls, and visit the Mausoleum of Skanderbeg (Albanian National Hero). Afterward, we will continue to Shkodra. A nice landscape with highland (Albanian Alps on the north) is a full contrast. City tour of Shkodra, Old Bazaar, Centrum, Cathedral and Mosque. Visit the Castle of Rozafa and we will enjoy wonderful views of mountains (Albanian Alps), Shkodra’s lake (the biggest in the Balkans), Drini, Buna and Kir rivers with the valleys around from the top of Rozafa castle. Na het ontbijt gaan we verder naar Durres. Deze havenstad is de belangrijkste oude centraal-mediterrane metropool tot de middeleeuwen in de 15e eeuw, toen het werd bezet door de Ottomanen, tot 1912 toen Albanië zijn onafhankelijkheid uitriep en Durres tot 1920 de hoofdstad werd. (Durres is ook meer dan 3500 jaar oud (voor het eerst genoemd in Odisea waar Ulicsus een deel van zijn tijd doorbracht in Taulantia (oude Pelasgiaans-Illyrische naam van Epidamn-Durrah-Durres) op zijn terugweg naar Itaka na de Trojaanse oorlog. Deze stad heeft het grootste Romeinse amfitheater in de Balkan (ongeveer 20.000 zitplaatsen), dat dateert uit het begin van de 2e eeuw en dat we zullen bezoeken met de oude kasteelmuur en byzantijnse bazaar/forum, Romeinse openbare baden, enz. Later gaan we verder naar Berat, een van de oudste bewoonde gebieden van Albanië, meer dan 2400 jaar oud en met een speciale status van UNESCO. Bezoek het kasteel van Berat met het Onufri museum en andere kerken binnenin; de moskee van Berat en de oude brug van Gorica, het Onufri Museum en verschillende kerken en moskeeën. Onufri was een Albanese meesterschilder uit de 16e eeuw. Veel van zijn prachtig geschilderde iconen staan nog steeds in het museum, terwijl andere te vinden zijn in kerken in Albanië en Griekenland waar hij werkte. Drive to Ardenica Monastery, a 13th century Byzantine site locally famed for hosting the wedding of the hero Skanderbeg. We will continue from here to the ruins of Apollonia, an atmospheric set of Roman remains on a remote hillside and once an important city in the region. Later depart to the coastal city of Vlora. Visit the city, including its old town, independence square and monument, where Albanian independence from the Ottomans was proclaimed on November 28th, 1912. Return to Tirana. Overnight at Albanopolis Hotel 4* or similar. (B)
