Ontmoet de gids vroeg in de ochtend en reis naar het westen. De eerste stop van de dag is bij Grábrók, een 3.400 jaar oude vulkaankrater, waar je kunt genieten van een 360-graden uitzicht over de hele vallei. We gaan verder naar Eiríksstaðir, ooit de thuisbasis van de wereldberoemde Viking ontdekkingsreizigers, Eirik de Rode en zijn zoon Leif de Gelukkige. In een replica van hun longhouse en levend museum word je ondergedompeld in de manier waarop de Vikingen leefden en in de IJslandse geschiedenis en folklore. We stoppen bij de eerste van vele charmante watervallen in de Westfjorden, de Þingmannaá waterval. Onze rustplaats voor de komende twee nachten is het schilderachtige vissersdorpje Patreksfjörður, een afgelegen dorp met een prachtig uitzicht over de fjord en de Groenlandse Zee.

Begin de dag op een van de mooiste stranden van IJsland, Rauðasandur. Dit 10 kilometer lange iriserende strand dankt zijn naam aan het prachtige roodgekleurde zand dat naadloos overgaat in stromen turkoois zeewater en prachtige fotomogelijkheden biedt. Bezoek het Hnjótur Volksmuseum, een perfecte introductie tot het dagelijks leven in de Westfjorden en de geschiedenis van de landbouw en zeevaart in IJsland. We gaan verder naar Látrabjarg, een van de hoogste zeevogelkliffen van Europa. Dit voorgebergte is ook het meest westelijke punt van IJsland, vanwaar je een ononderbroken uitzicht hebt over de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan en over vogelkolonies zoals papegaaiduikers, alken en zeekoeten, zover het oog reikt. Tijdens onze reis vandaag zien we ook het scheepswrak Garðar, het oudste stalen schip van IJsland. s Avonds gaan we terug naar Patreksfjörður, voor een welverdiende rust na een dag vol avonturen.

De reis van vandaag begint bij de Dynjandi waterval, die algemeen wordt beschouwd als een van de indrukwekkendste en mooiste watervallen van IJsland. Dynjandi heeft een gelaagde structuur die een etherische stroom van kleine watervallen creëert. We reizen verder langs de kustlijn en fjorden naar de fascinerende pier van Önundarfjörður. De pier steekt uit vanaf een prachtig gouden strand tot ver in het water en is een perfecte plek voor een panoramisch uitzicht over de fjord. Tijdens een bezoek aan het dorp Flateyri stoppen we bij een verborgen juweeltje, Gamla bókabúðin of "De Oude Boekhandel". Dit charmante winkeltje bestaat al sinds 1914 en is een geweldige plek om te snuffelen naar unieke souvenirs en te genieten van traditioneel IJslands design op zijn best. We leren meer over de geschiedenis van Flateyri en de verwoestende lawine in 1995, waarbij we naar de lawinebeschermingshekken gaan die zijn gebouwd om de lokale bevolking te beschermen tegen toekomstige tragedies. In de namiddag arriveren we in de grootste stad in de Westfjorden, Ísafjörður, waar we de komende twee nachten zullen overnachten.

This morning we will venture to the 640 meters high mountain of Bolafjall, which sports a steel viewing platform that juts over the cliff with staggering view of the sea and nearby fjords, not for the faint of heart. Visit the restored fishing hut at Ósvör Maritime Museum, to learn about the old days of rowboat fishing and the challenging life in isolated fishing villages in the 19th century.
Afterwards we drive to the village of Suðureyri, where we will enjoy an informative walk around town and have the opportunity to savour delicious seafood sourced from a local producer, which promises to acquaint you with Iceland’s rich heritage and fishing traditions (Excluded summer 2026)
In the afternoon, enjoy free time for leisure in Ísafjörður, or alternatively join an optional addon such as a thrilling ATV tour around Ísafjörður or a visit to the beautiful island of Vigur, a long and narrow island and home to an abundant number of puffins, Artic terns, eiders, guillemots, and more.

Vandaag reizen we langs de fjorden van Ísafjarðardjúp, waar je kunt genieten van ongelooflijke uitzichten - als je geluk hebt, zie je misschien wel een walvis! We bezoeken de Saltverk fabriek in Reykjanes en leren over het proces van zoutproductie, dat 100% wordt aangedreven door geothermische energie. Onze volgende stop brengt ons naar het pittoreske dorpje Hólmavík en het Museum van IJslandse Tovenarij en Hekserij. We leren over de geschiedenis en folklore rondom hekserij en tovenarij in IJsland, een uitgebreide collectie artefacten zoals oude grimoires, rituele voorwerpen en de opmerkelijke IJslandse magische notenbalken waarvan men geloofde dat ze beschermende en magische krachten bezaten. Na een spannende dag vol ontdekkingen reizen we naar de afgelegen Vogur Country Lodge in West-IJsland. Deze overnachtingslocatie is een werkelijk vredige en prachtige plek dicht bij de baai van Breiðafjörður.

Na een lange week met veel ontdekkingen gaan we terug naar de stad Reykjavík, met onderweg een paar prachtige stops. We beginnen bij Hraunfossar of "de lavawatervallen", die worden gevoed door een gletsjerrivier die honderden kilometers aflegt en door lava filtert, waardoor het water uit de lavarotsen lijkt te komen. Daarna bezoeken we een paardenboerderij, waar we oog in oog komen te staan met een van IJslands pluizigste en vriendelijkste inheemse dieren, het IJslandse paard. In de middag verkennen we de hoofdstad, leren we over de geschiedenis en stoppen we bij de vele bezienswaardigheden.

Multi-day fixed departure/SIC tours: A cancellation fee of 20% will be retained by us for cancellations made from 6 to 8 weeks prior to tour start. From 6 weeks until 4 weeks prior to tour start, the fee is 50%. No refund is possible for cancellations less than 4 weeks prior to tour start, or for no shows, and a tour begun, but not completed. GJ-Travel reserves the right to charge a non-refundable booking fee/deposit of up to 20 % in order to secure space on the tour. Final payment is due 6 weeks prior to tour start.
Customized private tours (individuals and groups): Cancellation terms and fees will be stated in the individual price offer. General terms are: EUR 500 non-refundable deposit from moment of booking until 12 weeks prior to tour start, 10% cancellation fee for cancellations 9-12 weeks prior to tour start, 50% cancellation fee for cancellations 5-8 weeks prior to tour start and 100% cancellation fee for cancellations within 28 days prior to tour start or for no shows, and a tour begun but not completed.
Greenland tours:
A deposit of 60% of the tour package price is required to finalise a booking and issue the flight ticket. Unfortunately, we cannot block flight seats and hotel rooms in Greenland without a deposit. Full payment is due 8 weeks before the tour start.
Once the booking is confirmed and up to 8 weeks before departure: Cancellation and changes (of ANY kind) will cost 60% of the tour package price. 8 weeks before departure and until travel date: Cancellation and changes (of ANY kind) will cost 100% of the tour package price.
Trips to Greenland are always subject to weather, fog and ice conditions. Therefore the sequence of the day tours and excursions in Greenland is subject to change, or if needed, an alternative excursion will be operated if available. In addition, delays and flight cancellations between Iceland and Greenland can happen. Therefore we strongly recommend you buy travel insurance in the country of residence to cover any additional travel expenses should your flights be delayed or cancelled due to weather. We recommend not to book any international flight directly after a trip from Greenland. Ideally, stay a minimum of two nights in Iceland after the Greenland trip to avoid the risk of missing an international flight.
Complaints:
Every effort will be made to provide you with the best holiday possible. Should you, for any reason, not be satisfied with the services provided during your stay, please inform our tour guide or a member of our staff so that the situation can be rectified immediately. If you do not bring the complaint to our attention within 24 hours of the problem occurring and give us the opportunity to put things right, we will not be held responsible for the problem. Important Liability:
Guðmundur Jónasson Travel cannot take responsibility for defaults or delays caused by contracting parties. We reserve the right to change routes, itineraries or timetables without prior notice should road, weather conditions or operational situations so dictate. Some tours may also be operated in reverse. No liability is accepted for losses or expenses due to delays or changes of arrival or departure of flights or other services, injury, sickness, accident, strikes, damage, negligence, weather, war or other causes beyond the control of Guðmundur Jónasson Travel. Guðmundur Jónasson Travel can not accept responsibility for arrangements other than those paid for in advance as part of a Guðmundur Jónasson Tour. Extra excursions taken during one of our tours will be the responsibility of that individual operator.
We strongly recommend that all travellers to Iceland have general travel insurance issued in their country of residence. This insurance should also cover all activities, i.e. horse riding, white river rafting, mountain biking etc. which are part of their tour. Your contract will be governed by Icelandic law, and any disputes will be dealt with in the courts of Iceland.
