Stage 1 - 70 km/43 mi 

This stage begins along tranquil coastal paths, past seabird sanctuaries, dunes and fishing villages, before heading inland along the medieval Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela. As you ride, you'll be reminded that this ancient route has been travelled by pilgrims for centuries and walked with passion and devotion by many. Barcelos, on the banks of the River Cávado, is famous for its pottery industry and is steeped in religious and cultural significance. The iconic Barcelos rooster, a symbol of faith and good fortune, originated here - be sure to ask about its legend, which is an integral part of the town's history. While in Barcelos, don't miss the 13th-century Mother Church, and every hour on the hour you'll hear the pealing of bells from the many parishes for which the town is famous. 

Stage 2 - 34 km/21 mi

You will follow the same route that Queen Isabel of Portugal (1271 - 1336) took during her pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Along the way, you’ll cross the Tábuas Bridge, documented since 1135, an important river crossing and part of one of the most significant routes to Compostela in Portugal. Please note that, as you follow the original path, there may be sections where you need to carry your bicycle by hand. Upon reaching Ponte de Lima, the oldest village in Portugal, you’ll be welcomed by its stunning 24-arch bridge. For dinner, enjoy Arroz de Sarrabulho, a hearty rice dish with pork, blood, and spices, offering an authentic taste of the Minho region. 

Stage 3 - 36 km/22 mi

Leaving Ponte de Lima, the route passes the Montaria Waterfall, near the Âncora River—a perfect place to stop and refresh. This day includes the challenging Labruja climb, one of the most demanding sections of the Pilgrim's Way. Its steep gradients and rugged terrain will test your stamina, but the effort will be rewarded with breathtaking views and a deep sense of achievement. The journey continues to the Rubiães Roman Bridge, an ancient granite structure with three arches that spans the riverbanks along historic paths. As you cycle through the tranquil countryside, you may see wildlife such as red squirrels scurrying through the oak and chestnut trees, or a heron near the water. The day ends in Valença, a fortified town on the Minho, where the 17th-century walls offer panoramic views of the river and the cathedral city of Tui in Spain.

Stage 4 - 55 km/34 mi

After crossing into Spain, you’ll cycle north through the Louro River valley, surrounded by pine forests and the stunning landscapes of Galicia. Before reaching Pontevedra, stop at the Monasterio de Santo Domingo viewpoint for panoramic views and visit the medieval bridge of Pontesampaio, where the final battle against Napoleon's army in Galicia was fought. Pontevedra, set on the banks of the River Lerez, is renowned for its well-preserved historic centre. The city is affectionately known as "Boa Vila" (the "Good City") for its welcoming atmosphere, vibrant culture, and livable streets. With pedestrian-friendly walkways and lush green spaces, it’s a delightful place to explore. Don’t miss the farmers' market, where you can taste local cheeses and immerse yourself in the town’s culinary traditions. 

Stage 5 - 40 km/25 mi

Leave the Atlantic coast behind and head inland through lush forests and the valley of the River Gandra. On the way, you'll pass through Caldas de Reis, a charming town ideal for a coffee or lunch break. The final stretch to Padrón, about 15km/9mi, runs gently along the banks of the Valga River. Along the way, you'll pass the Church of Santa Maria de Carracedo and hear the legend of Saint James, who is said to have preached in the hills above Padrón at Santiaguino del Monte. Once in Padrón, take the chance to stop at the Fonte do Carme, near the Church of Santa María do Carme, to take a break, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and drink from the refreshing water to later try the famous pimientos de Padrón. 

Stage 6 - 26 km/16 mi

The final stretch of your journey is truly exhilarating for most, as you’re about to reach Santiago de Compostela. Upon arriving, you'll feel the excitement that all pilgrims experience as they near this medieval sanctuary of Saint James. It's undeniable that Santiago is one of Christianity's most significant and sacred cities, a cherished destination for countless travellers throughout history. Be sure to visit the cathedral – it's a place rich in history, faith, and inspiration.
