Ga op een buitengewoon avontuur over het adembenemende Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland, van de uitgestrekte Canterbury Plains tot de majestueuze Southern Alps. Deze reis biedt een ongeëvenaarde kans om het uitgestrekte en indrukwekkende Mackenzie Basin te verkennen en je onder te dompelen in de serene schoonheid van de gletsjermeren en besneeuwde bergen. Als we ons avontuur voortzetten, volgen we de Waitaki rivier naar de kust, dwars door het uitgestrekte "big-sky country" van Central Otago. Hier rijden we over het iconische Otago Central Rail Trail, een route die bekend staat om zijn pioniersgeschiedenis en prachtige terrein. Onze eindbestemming is de levendige stad Queenstown, gelegen aan het prachtige Lake Wakatipu. Queenstown, dat bekend staat als de 'Adventure Capital of New Zealand', biedt een scala aan activiteiten en is de perfecte plek om je verblijf te verlengen. Dag 1

Christchurch - Port Hills

Welkom bij Otautahi Christchurch. Vandaag vinden we onze fietsbenen met een opwarmrit langs de prachtige Port Hills met uitzicht op Banks Peninsula. We volgen de verharde Summit Road, rond de kraterrand van een uitgedoofde vulkaan met panoramische uitzichten over de stad, de besneeuwde Southern Alps en de levendig blauwe Lyttelton Harbour. We rijden naar Godley Head waar de overblijfselen van de verdedigingsbatterij uit WO2 uitkijken over de Stille Oceaan voordat we naar de havenstad Lyttelton rijden. Onze rit volgt dan de kustlijn, met veel korte brutale klimmetjes en een paar leuke afdalingen tussen de baaien. Als we Governor's Bay bereiken, laden we de fietsen in bij de aanlegsteiger en stappen we in het busje om naar Christchurch en ons hotel te rijden, waar we aan het eind van de middag aankomen. Dag 2

Christchurch naar Lake Tekapo

After breakfast, we load up our gear and drive to the small settlement of Cave on the edge of the Canterbury Plains with a coffee stop at Pleasant Point. This area, New Zealand’s only “flat” land, is wide open country with braided rivers teeming with trout and salmon. The Canterbury Plains are also rich in sheep and dairy farming and today’s ride finds us traveling through a pastoral landscape. Today our ride takes us up the Little Opawa River Valley and over the Waratah Saddle, winding through rolling farmland. We then head towards the tussock covered hills and over the Mackenzie Saddle (785m/2575ft) which cuts through the ranges and gives us our first views of the vast arid Mackenzie Country, where rivers flow through sweeping tussock plains with a backdrop of the snowy alps. We head northwards to meet the main highway at Dog Kennel Corner, a memorial to the importance of sheep dogs, prior to formal fencing of farmland. Here we load up to drive the final 15km along the main road to Tekapo. In early summer this road is lined with lupins creating an incredible splash of colour to the arid landscape. Upon arrival in Lake Tekapo, we take in views of the amazing turquoise water and the Southern Alps from the Church of the Good Shepherd. Dag 3

Lake Tekapo naar Aoraki/Mount Cook

Today we join one of New Zealand's Great Rides, the Alps to Ocean cycle trail, starting from Lake Tekapo and following alongside vivid hydro canals to reach a high terrace overlooking Lake Pukaki and the surrounding mountains. The trail then dips down to meet the lakeshore, offering incredible views of Aoraki/Mt Cook. We join an easy flowing trail as we round the bottom of the lake before before crossing the wide-open Pukaki Flats to reach the hydro town of Twizel where our ride ends. After lunch, we load up the bikes and drive into Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park where you will be awed by NZ’s highest peaks. Once we arrive in Mount Cook township, there will be an opportunity to take a walk to see amazing panoramic views. Choose between a climb to the Red Tarns or a shorter walk to Kea Point. You can also visit the Edmund Hilary Museum or the interesting Department of Conservation visitor information centre. Be sure to admire the setting sun on the Southern Alps and take in the vast starry skies after dark. Cycling Stats: 57km, +305m (27% Paved, 73% Gravel)

Aoraki/Mount Cook naar Lake Ohau

This morning, we begin with an option of walks including, the Mueller Lake Lookout via the Hooker Valley Track, the Tasman Glacier Viewpoint, or even the Sealey Tarns Track if you are up for a challenge. (The full Hooker Valley Track is closed at the first swing bridge until April 2026. A new second bridge is being installed. You are still able to walk out to the Mueller Lake Lookout before the first bridge.) After retracing our steps, we'll return to the van and transfer to the southern end of Lake Pukaki to continue our journey by bike. This afternoon's ride takes us alongside vivid blue canals towards the beautiful Lake Ohau. Following a fun cycle trail, we'll speed around the lake shore to our lodge accommodation for the night. Relax on the deck with a glass of wine and take in the stunning lake and alpine views. Hiking Distance: Mueller Lake Lookout via Hooker Track: 1.8km/30min; Tasman Glacier Viewpoint : - 3km/45 mins (includes 300 steps); Sealey Tarns Track: 5.3km/3-4hr (2,200 steps 550m elevation gain); Cycling Stats: 41km, +245m (58% Paved, 42% Gravel)

Meer van Ohau naar Oamaru

Today we head away from the Alps and cycle towards the Pacific Ocean, beginning near the Benmore Dam. Our route takes us along a quiet back road around the picturesque Lake Aviemore, part of the impressive Waitaki Hydro Electric scheme, crossing the dams at either end of the lake. We will rejoin the Alps to Ocean trail through Kurow, where we'll load up and transfer through to the unique formations at Elephant Rocks. Back on the bikes we'll continue on a mix of trail and gravel roads through to the historic Victorian town of Oamaru. Oamaru boasts some of New Zealand's oldest and most beautifully restored buildings, along with a thriving art scene. You can explore the creative Steampunk Museum, visit the Penguin colony (best seen at dusk), and enjoy fresh seafood for dinner. Cycling Stats: Morning ride : 44.3km, +356m (59% Paved, 41% Gravel) Afternoon ride : 46.1km, +464m, (25% Paved 75% Gravel)

Oamaru naar Ranfurly

Today's ride takes us into the heart of Central Otago, starting with a climb over Macrae's Pass, which rewards us with sweeping views of the Taieri Plains. Departing from the rural town of Palmerston, we travel through farming country to reach New Zealand’s largest operational gold mine and the historic settlement of Macraes, established in the 1850s. We'll pause for lunch at the historic Stanley's Hotel before a fast descent leads us to Hyde, where we join the iconic Central Otago Rail Trail. The smooth, flat gravel trail allows us to make quick progress into Ranfurly, passing interesting railway relics, riding through gorges, and crossing old viaducts. Dinner tonight at a typical rural Kiwi pub! Cycling Stats: 91km, +1374m (46% Paved, 54% Gravel)

Dag 7

Ranfurly naar Queenstown

Onze laatste dag staat in het teken van klassiek gravelrijden als we verder rijden langs het Central Otago Rail Trail. Dit gemakkelijke pad voert ons door weidse landschappen en stelt ons in staat om de pioniersgeschiedenis van de regio te ontdekken. Terwijl we over talloze viaducten, spoortunnels en met de hand gegraven afgravingen rijden, bewonderen we het vakmanschap van de vroege kolonisten. Als we het hoogste punt van de route bereiken, fietsen we door de schilderachtige Ida Valley en de Pooleburn Gorge, om aan te komen in het historische dorp Ophir. De tocht eindigt in Alexandra, waar we in een plaatselijk café kunnen proosten op de fietsprestaties van deze week voordat we naar Queenstown rijden. In Queenstown nemen we afscheid en zetten we je af in het centrum van de stad. Annuleringsbeleid

Cancellation Policy as of Wednesday 9th October 2024

If you wish to cancel your tour, you must notify AS in writing where after the cancellation will take effect subject to the following:

- If cancellation takes place more than 70 days prior to your departure date your full deposit will be forfeited.

- If cancellation takes place within 70-35 days prior to your departure date 50% of the tour price will be forfeited.

- If cancellation takes place less than 35 days prior to your departure date 100% of the tour price will be forfeited.

Variations to the conditions outlined in clauses 3, 4 and 5 may apply. Please refer to individual trip notes for details. The tour price is quoted as a package. No partial refunds or credit will be given for services not used. Any amount forfeited, which has not then been paid to AS by you, may be recovered from you by AS as a debt due and payable.

Amendments/Transfers

AMENDMENTS: To make amendments to your tour arrangements, you must notify AS in writing. Each amendment to your tour arrangements will incur a $100 administration fee and you will be liable for any increase in airfares or operational expenses occasioned by the amendment.

TRANSFERS: If you wish to transfer from one tour to another, you must notify AS in writing after which the transfer will take effect subject to the following. Transfers may only be made to another tour to commence within 12 months of your original departure date and the following transfer charges will apply:

- If your notice is received more than 70 days prior to your original departure date, a $100 transfer fee will apply. In addition, any increase in airfares or operational services or extra permit/deposit penalties will apply: or

- If your notice is received within 70-35 days prior to your original departure date, 25% of your original tour price will be forfeited: or

- If your notice is received within 34-8 days prior to your original departure date, 50% of your original tour price will be forfeited: or

-If less than 8 days prior to your original departure date, 100% of your tour price will be forfeited.

A deposit of $400 per person should be paid once the booking is confirmed

• The remaining balance must be paid 70 days prior to the trip departure

• The total amount should be paid immediately if the booking is confirmed and the trip departure is within 70 days.

Cancellation Policy applicable to all bookings made before the 9th October 2024

If the client cancels a trip:

• Outside 60 days of the departure date you will forfeit your full deposit.

• Between 60-30 days prior to departure you will forfeit 50% of the tour price.

• Within 30 days of departure you will forfeit 100% of the tour price.

If you wish to transfer from one Adventure South tour to another, you should notify Adventure South in writing and your transfer will take effect subject to the following. Transfers may only be made to another tour to commence within 12 months of your original departure date and the following transfer charges will apply:

• If your notice is received more than 30 days prior to your original departure a $100 transfer fee will apply.

• If your notice is received within 30-8 days of your original departure date, 25% of your original tour price will be forfeited and the remainder transferred to the departure nominated by you.

• If your notice is received within 7 days of your original departure date, 100% of your original tour price will be forfeited.
