The Rongai Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border, offering a quieter, more remote climbing experience. Known for its gradual ascent and panoramic views, this route is ideal for climbers seeking a less crowded trek. The 6-day itinerary allows time to acclimatize while enjoying diverse landscapes, from lush forests to alpine deserts.

Day 1

Nalemoru Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)

Distance: ~8 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Montane Forest

The trek begins with a gentle hike through lush farmlands and pine forests, offering opportunities to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys. The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp, located on the edge of the moorland zone.

Day 2

Simba Camp (2,625m) to Second Cave Camp (3,450m)

Distance: ~8 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Enjoy a steady climb through open moorlands, with expansive views of Kibo Peak. Arrive at Second Cave Camp, where you’ll spend the night amidst the serene wilderness.

Day 3

Second Cave Camp (3,450m) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

Distance: ~6 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland

The trail becomes steeper as you leave the main path, heading toward Kikelewa Camp. The landscape transforms into sparse alpine vegetation, with dramatic views of the Mawenzi massif.

Day 4

Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m)

Distance: ~6 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

A challenging but rewarding trek leads to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, set beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing with a hike around the tarn and enjoy the rugged beauty of this high-altitude landscape.

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: ~22 km | Hiking Time: 12–16 hours | Habitat: Arctic to Moorland

Start your summit attempt around midnight, trekking to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 6

Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,870m)

Distance: ~20 km | Hiking Time: 6–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

The final descent takes you through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest. Arrive at Marangu Gate to collect your certificate, marking the end of your incredible adventure. Return to Moshi for a well-deserved celebration.
