From Krimml via Salzburg to Passau

The Hohe Tauern National Park gives its name to this wonderful cycle route. The views of its snow-covered peaks will inspire you right at the start of your journey. The river valleys of the Salzach, Saalach and Inn lead you through diverse flora and fauna and take you to high culture, unknown gems, authentic cuisine and unadulterated customs. This impressive diversity makes the Tauern Cycle Path a true feast for all the senses.


Details of your trip along the Tauern Cycle Path

A visit to the largest waterfalls in Europe should definitely be on your program - admission to the Krimml Falls is included in the tour price. You cycle through the Hohe Tauern National Park to your first stage destination near Kaprun. Your cycling vacation continues via Saalfelden and Lofer to the Mozart city of Salzburg.


At Oberndorf, take a look at the "Silent Night Chapel" and cycle on to Burghausen, where the largest castle complex in Central Europe awaits you. In Upper Austria, follow the Inn to Braunau, Obernberg and Schärding. Stroll along the colorful Silberzeile in the baroque town and treat yourself to an ice cream or coffee and cake in one of the many cafés. A few kilometers separate you from the picturesque three-river city of Passau.



Highlights along the route from Krimml to Passau

The Hohe Tauern National Park: The largest national park in the Alps is home to Austria's highest mountains, fascinating flora and fauna and spectacular panoramas on an area of over 1,800 square meters. The National Park Worlds Museum near Mittersill provides interesting insights into the creation and history of the protected area. Above all, enjoy the magnificent views and fantastic mountain scenery!

The festival city of Salzburg: let yourself be captivated by the birthplace of Mozart! A stroll through the Mirabell Gardens will take you back to times long past, while one of Salzburg's typical pastries will sweeten the moment. The old town with the Getreidegasse, the cathedral and many other sights is simply a feast for the eyes!

The three-river city of Passau: the green Inn and the black Ilz flow into the blue Danube - a spectacle that is best experienced in Passau from above, for example at the Veste Oberhaus. The largest Catholic church organ in the world awaits you in the cathedral and the alleyways of the old town have a Mediterranean flair. The city owes this to the Italian architects who rebuilt Passau after a devastating fire in the 17th century.


Interesting facts about cycling along the Tauern Cycle Path

Six cycle stages, each 50 to 60 kilometers long, lead from Krimml to Passau - you will cover around 300 kilometers along the entire route of the Tauern Cycle Path. You start the day with a hearty breakfast at your accommodation so that you can tackle the sporting challenges full of energy. Our local contacts will take care of the daily transportation of your luggage.

Day 1

Arrival to Krimml

Take a walk to the largest waterfalls in Europe today.

Today's stage takes you through the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Oberpinzgau. Snow-covered three-thousand-meter peaks will accompany you all the time. Lush green meadows and cozy little villages alternate and provide a fairytale backdrop. In Kaprun you can also visit the high mountain reservoirs.

You should take a refreshing swim in Lake Zell. Via the castle village of Maishofen and Maria Alm with its famous pilgrimage church, you will quickly reach Saalfelden, where you can enjoy your lunch break. Other highlights on your way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and the Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach.

On today's day tour you will cycle through the tranquil Saalach Valley. Bad Reichenhall in the small German corner will enchant you with its Bavarian flair. Just a short distance more and you have reached the Mozart city of Salzburg. The rich cultural offering will inspire you. You should plan enough time for a stroll through the old town and a visit to Mozart's birthplace.

Oberndorf with the "Silent Night Chapel" and extensive floodplain forests lead to Tittmoning. From here you follow the "Unterer Inn Nature Adventure Trail" to Burghausen. A magnificent old town and the largest castle complex in Central Europe are the most outstanding features of this town.

You can cycle comfortably along the Inn cycle path to the Gothic town of Braunau. Further along the route you will come across many bird colonies that nest near the river bank. You cycle along the German-Austrian border to your overnight stay in Obernberg with its well-known market square and baroque buildings or to the spa town of Bad Füssing.

The tour continues along the Inn, where the famous Reichersberg Abbey is located. In Schärding you should take another break at the baroque market square before you reach your destination, Passau. A river cruise would definitely be a fitting end to your cycling trip.
