Tilicho Lake
A house of freshwaters- Tilicho Lake is the highest elevated water land of the world situates at 4,949m (16,237ft) above sea level. Surrounded by Tilicho, Nilgiri, Khangsar, and Muktinath peaks, this lake reflects snowcapped mountains in the cold, clear turquoise waters.
Apart from the picturesque views of the mountain ranges throughout, Tilicho Lake carries some religious significance as well. Hindus believe that Tilicho Lake is the ancient Kak Bhusundi Lake mentioned in the epic Ramayana- a holy book in Hinduism. The sage Kak Bhusundi is believed to have first told the happenings of Ramayana to Garuda - king of birds, near this lake. The sage took the form of a crow while telling the story to Garuda. Crow translates to Kak in Sanskrit, hence the name Kak Bhusndi for the sage.
In the past few years, Tilicho Lake has become the destination of one of the most popular side trips of the Annapurna Circuit trek spending approximately 3–4 days more. Some of the teahouses are built between Manang village and Tilicho Lake; therefore trekkers need not stay camping during the trip. The final approach to the lake is done in a day hike from the lodge at Tilicho Base Camp.
