Tour program

Day 1

Jour 1 : En route pour la patrie de Gengis Khan

With a suitcase full of anticipation, we head to the airport and from there to Mongolia.
Your tour guide is looking forward to meeting you and welcomes you warmly after landing at Ulaanbaatar airport. Gather your strength for the day over breakfast and then check into your room and relax a little. In the afternoon, you will get to know the heart of the capital on a city tour: the central Genghis Khan Square, a beautiful example of socialist architecture in Ulaanbaatar. Continue to the Zaisan Monument on a hill on the outskirts of the city, which offers you a wonderful panoramic view of the city. Last but not least, you will visit the winter palace of the eighth and last Bogd Khan. The Bogd Khan was the Buddhist leader in Mongolia. Of the original four summer and winter residences, the Winter Palace is the only one still standing. The former palace is now a museum with many exhibitions and comprises a total of six temples. Before dinner, you will attend a one-hour concert and enjoy the extraordinary sounds of throat singing and the horse-headed violin.

Meals
Breakfast and dinner are included in the price.

Where to stay
Holiday Inn Ulaanbaatar
From the Holiday Inn Ulaanbaatar, you can walk to the central Sukhbaatar Square in around 15 minutes. The spacious rooms of the hotel, which opened in 2017, are furnished in a modern style. Enjoy Mongolian, Asian and Western dishes in the restaurant, which is located in the open lobby, and enjoy your favorite drink in the cocktail lounge.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 15 km.
The Gandan Monastery is the largest and most important Buddhist monastery in the country and is located on a hill in the west of Ulaanbaatar. The splendor of the temples and monastery complex can be seen from afar. As a "living museum", the complex is both an attraction and a vibrant place for the Buddhist faith, which has ample space for practice and teaching. The eagerly used prayer wheels, which are located both outside and inside the buildings, are a beautiful sight. In the monastery, you can experience a Buddhist ceremony together with monks. Southwest of the capital is the Hustai National Park. The name means Birch Mountains. The park offers a typical Mongolian forest and steppe landscape. It is home to many wild animals, including Siberian wapitis, gazelles, red deer and ibex. The area is particularly important for the reintroduction of Tachi horses. They were already extinct in the wild and had only survived in zoos. Thanks to successful breeding, more than 100 animals now live here, but unfortunately you rarely get to see them. You hike through the park for around two to three hours - enjoy the solitude of nature.

Meals
Meals included are breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Accommodation
Khustain Nuruu Yurt Camp
The Khustain Nuruu yurt camp is located at the northern entrance to Hustai National Park, about 100 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar. The yurt camp is located in the middle of the green steppe with sweeping views of the landscape. You spend the night in pairs or alone in 4- to 6-person yurts, which are furnished with traditionally painted wooden furniture. There is a stove in the middle of the yurt. The camp consists of sleeping yurts, a dining room and communal showers and toilets. There is also a souvenir store and various leisure activities.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 110 km.
On the way west to the central region of Mongolia, you visit the ruins of the Khar Bukh Balgas fortress, which is a testimony to the Kidan Empire from the 10th to 12th centuries. You continue to Gurvanbulag, an area where forest, mountains, lonely steppes and the sand dunes of the Gobi Desert meet. This unique area is part of the Khogno Khan Nature Reserve. Here you will visit a nomadic family and spend the night in a yurt camp belonging to a nomadic community. In this way, you will come into direct contact with the inhabitants and at the same time gain deep insights into their culture and everyday life. Don't be shy and ask what you want to know about nomadism - you will be delighted by the hospitality and cheerful way of life of the nomads.

Meals
The included meals are breakfast, lunch and dinner in the nomadic community.

Accommodation
Yurt camp of the nomadic community of Gurvanbulag
The yurt camp of the Gurvanbulag nomadic community is located on the edge of the Chogno-Chan nature reserve. It was founded on the initiative of the community and has been successfully run by nomads since 2009. In this way, the nomads are supported in their traditional way of life and at the same time have the opportunity to earn a living. As a guest at the eco-camp, you will gain a unique insight into modern-day nomadic life and experience the culture at first hand. You will spend the night alone or in pairs in a yurt. Simple pump showers in separate yurts (communal showers) and toilets are available.

Notes
The route covers approx. 210 km.
Yesterday was certainly not enough to experience all the facets of being a nomad. Today you will have the opportunity to spend the day according to your taste: enjoy the tranquility of the Mongolian steppe, hike to the sand dunes, try your hand at archery or help the villagers with the traditional cheese or milk brandy production including tasting. At the end of this day you will know what a real "Khorkhog" tastes like and which tricks you can use to win at the common "Shagai" game with the nomads.

Meals
The included meals are breakfast, lunch and dinner in the nomadic community.

Accommodation
Yurt camp of the nomadic community Gurvanbulag [follow-up overnight].
Yurt camp of nomadic community Gurvanbulag is your accommodation today as well.
Today you will travel to the Ongi Monastery, which lies on both sides of the Ongi River in a small black lava mountain range. The 435-kilometer-long river rises in the Changai Mountains and runs through the Gobi Desert until it flows into the Red Lake. The river is now in danger of drying up: it dried up for the first time in 1998. You visit the ruins of the monastery, because like all monasteries, this complex was destroyed. For around 15 years, a stupa has commemorated the lamas who were killed in the 1930s. Today, a few monks are once again practising in a newly built temple. In addition to a small museum, animal sculptures can be seen on a nearby hill. The monastery was once a center of Buddhist education for medicine, philosophy and astrology.

Meals
Meals included are breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Accommodation
Ongi Monastery Yurt Camp
The Ongi Monastery Yurt Camp is a camp that offers you a high standard of accommodation in the middle of the desert. In addition to the spacious and lovingly furnished yurts, you will find a reception with a souvenir store, a restaurant with international dishes, a meditation room and even internet. You can also pamper yourself in the spa area.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 240 km.
In the Gobi-Gurwan-Saichan National Park west of Dalandsadgad lies one of Mongolia's main attractions: the spectacular Khongoryn Els shifting sand dunes, which are more than 100 meters high and four kilometers wide and stretch between the mountain ranges over a length of 180 kilometers. After you have settled into your yurt camp and freshened up, you climb to the highest peak of the 'singing dune' - enjoy the view! When the wind blows over the dune crest, the grains of sand make a strange humming sound. This is why they are also known as the "singing dunes". Then you slide down the hill again. End the evening with a fantastic view of the golden sand dunes.

Meals
Meals included are breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Accommodation
Gobi Erdene Yurt Camp
The Gobi Erdene Yurt Camp in the Gobi-Gurwan-Saichan National Park offers a direct view of the impressive sand dunes of Khongoryn Els. Enjoy the sunset with a cool drink on the camp's large sun terrace. This desert camp is also powered by solar panels on each individual yurt.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 140 km.
The climb to the top of the sand dune takes around 1 ½ hours and requires a good level of stamina and fitness. Please discuss with your tour guide beforehand whether this hike is suitable for you.
Because it was so beautiful, we drive to the sand dunes again. They look completely different in the morning light. Or have they moved overnight? We visit a camel-breeding family in their ger - the kitchen, living and sleeping tent. There you also have the opportunity to ride the whimsical desert ships. Afterwards, we'll head to a flatter sand dune and in the afternoon you can enjoy some free time in your camp.

Meals
The included meals are breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Accommodation
Gobi Erdene Yurt Camp [overnight stay]
The Gobi Erdene Yurt Camp is also your accommodation today.
About 45 kilometers west of Dalandsadgad lies Jolyn Am, a picturesque narrow valley, also known as the Vulture Gorge. The gorge lies to the east of the Gurwan-Saichan Mountain in the eastern Altai Mountains. The stream that meanders through the valley disappears at the end under a snowfield that is several meters thick after winter and does not completely melt even in summer. You hike through the valley for around one and a half hours and, with a bit of luck, you may see vultures, steppe buzzards and various species of falcon circling in the blue sky.

Meals
Meals included are breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Accommodation
Gobi Bayanburd Yurt Camp
The Gobi Bayanburd Yurt Camp is located 5 kilometers from the provincial center of Dalandsadgad in the southern part of the Gobi Desert. The camp consists of sleeping yurts, a huge wooden dining yurt and communal showers and toilets. You can end the day in the camp's own sauna.

Notes
The driving distance is approx. 210 km.
You say goodbye to the lonely steppes and desert landscapes and drive back to Ulaanbaatar. You arrive in the capital in the afternoon and check into your hotel room. The rest of the day is free for you to shop for souvenirs and take a short walk. Mongolia is famous for its cashmere wool and camel hair products.

Meals
Breakfast and the farewell dinner are included in the price.

Accommodation
Holiday Inn Ulaanbaatar
From the Holiday Inn Ulaanbaatar, you can walk to the central Sukhbaatar Square in around 15 minutes. The spacious rooms of the hotel, which opened in 2017, are furnished in a modern style.
