Tour program

Day 1

Arrival in Leh

Your Ladakhi adventure kicks off the moment you touch down at Leh Airport. A friendly Alkof Holidays representative will be there to greet you with a warm smile and whisk you off to your cozy hotel in Leh. After a seamless check-in, the rest of the day is yours to unwind – a vital step for acclimatization.

Leh boasts a breathtaking altitude, soaring from a mere 200 meters to a staggering 4,000 meters in just one hour!  This dramatic shift can be exhilarating, but remember, it's important to prioritize your well-being.  Rest and relaxation are key to proper acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the thinner air and higher elevation.

As the afternoon sun softens, we'll gently ease you into Leh's charm with visits to the majestic Leh Palace, a powerful symbol of the region's history. We'll also stop by the serene Shanti Stupa, a gleaming white monument offering panoramic views, and the vibrant local market, a bustling hub where you can soak up the local color. After a delicious dinner, you'll retire to your hotel for a restful night's sleep, preparing you for a full day of exploring Leh's wonders tomorrow.

Start point

Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL), Ladakh, Leh, Ladakh 194101, India

After a delicious breakfast, we'll embark on a drive towards Sangam, the majestic confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers.

En route, prepare to be amazed by the perplexing phenomenon of Magnetic Hill. Here, defy gravity as your vehicle appears to climb uphill with its engine off!  This optical illusion is sure to spark conversation and ignite your curiosity about Ladakh's unique landscapes.

Next, we'll pay our respects at Gurudwara Paththar Sahib, a serene gurudwara nestled amidst breathtaking mountain vistas.  Built in the 16th century to commemorate the visit of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, this tranquil space offers a window into Ladakh's rich cultural tapestry.

As the afternoon unfolds, we'll reach the awe-inspiring Sangam. Witness the dramatic convergence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers, their waters merging to forge a powerful path through the heart of Ladakh.  This confluence symbolizes the lifeblood of Ladakh, a region where the Indus River serves as a vital lifeline despite the limited rainfall.

On our return journey, we'll make a stop at the Ladakh Hall of Fame, a poignant tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.  This museum houses a collection of memorabilia, biographies of eminent military figures, and artifacts from the Kargil War, offering a deeper understanding of Ladakh's historical significance.

By the end of this captivating day, you'll have experienced a slice of Ladakh's history, mystery, and natural wonders, leaving you eager to explore even more tomorrow.

Our day begins with an early start as we embark on a thrilling journey towards Nubra Valley. Brace yourselves, for we'll be conquering Khardung La, the world's highest motorable road, perched at a staggering 18,380 feet (5,602 meters) above sea level.  Nicknamed the "Pass of Lower Castle," Khardung La offers breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks, a testament to the incredible feat of engineering by the Border Roads Organization.

Conquering this pass is an achievement in itself, and the sense of accomplishment will surely fuel your excitement for Nubra Valley.  Upon reaching this captivating valley, often referred to as Ladakh's "orchard," you'll be greeted by a sight unlike any other – the stark beauty of the Hunder Sand Dunes.  These wind-sculpted dunes create a mesmerizing contrast against the backdrop of the rugged mountains.

Here, you'll have the unforgettable opportunity to experience a camel ride on a Bactrian camel, also known as the "shaggy double-humped camel."  These gentle giants are a unique feature of the Nubra Valley landscape, adding to the charm of this offbeat destination.

As the day winds down, we'll check into our comfortable camp or hotel, providing a haven of relaxation amidst the captivating scenery.  The evening is yours to unwind and soak in the serenity of Nubra Valley, perhaps reflecting on the day's adventures and eagerly anticipating what tomorrow holds.  A delicious dinner will be served before you settle in for a restful night's sleep, preparing you for another exciting day exploring Nubra Valley's hidden gems.

After breakfast, we'll embark on a captivating journey to Turtuk, a village nestled amidst the majestic confluence of the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges.  This remote outpost, overlooking the glistening Shyok River, is home to the fascinating Balti people, renowned for their unique culture and traditions.

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Balti life.  Sample their delectable cuisine, brimming with local flavors and spices.  Learn about the village's intriguing history, once under Pakistani control before being reclaimed by India in 1971.  Stand atop the village and gaze upon the nearby Pakistani border, a poignant reminder of the region's past.  Many families in Turtuk have relatives residing just across the border, creating a unique sense of divided yet connected communities.

Turtuk is a haven for photographers, offering breathtaking landscapes and captivating cultural scenes.  Be sure to capture stunning images of the village, the surrounding mountains, and the vibrant life that unfolds here.  This hidden gem is also famous for its delectable apricots, a true local treat.  In the evenings, witness the captivating sword dances, a vibrant tradition performed during celebrations and weddings.  As the saying goes, "only smiles are sweeter than apricots in Turtuk," and this warm hospitality will surely leave a lasting impression.

By the end of the day, we'll return to Nubra Valley, carrying with you unforgettable memories of this culturally rich and historically significant village.

After a fortifying breakfast, we'll embark on a scenic journey towards the enchanting Diskit Monastery.  This imposing structure perched atop a hill offers panoramic vistas of the surrounding Nubra Valley.  Explore the ancient chambers and soak in the tranquil atmosphere, learning about the rich Buddhist heritage of the region.

Following our visit to Diskit Monastery, we'll begin our return journey towards Pangong Tso, with a stop at the Shyok River along the way.  This mighty river, a tributary of the Indus, snakes through the rugged landscape, adding to the dramatic scenery.

As we arrive at Pangong Tso, also known as Pangong Lake, prepare to be mesmerized by its breathtaking beauty.  This high-altitude lake, nestled amidst towering mountains, is renowned for its pristine turquoise waters and mirror-like surface.  The surrounding landscape offers a photographer's paradise, with opportunities to capture stunning images of the lake reflecting the snow-capped peaks.

In the evening, we'll check into our comfortable camps located near the lake.  Imagine falling asleep under a blanket of stars, with the majestic Pangong Tso shimmering beneath the moonlight.  A delicious dinner will be served before you settle in for a peaceful night's sleep, ready to fully experience the magic of Pangong Tso tomorrow.

After a delightful breakfast savored amidst the stunning backdrop of Pangong Tso, we'll bid farewell to this captivating lake and embark on our return journey to Leh.

As we traverse the scenic landscape, we'll make a stop at the illustrious Hemis Monastery, one of the largest and most prominent gompas in Ladakh.  Delve into its ancient chambers, marvel at the intricate murals, and witness the serene atmosphere that pervades this sacred place.  Hemis Monastery is also renowned for its vibrant annual festival, the Hemis Tsechu, where masked dances and colorful ceremonies come alive.

Our exploration continues with a visit to the magnificent Thiksey Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliffside.  This architectural marvel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Indus Valley.  Explore its labyrinthine corridors, admire the towering Buddha statue, and gain insights into the monastic way of life.

No journey through Ladakh is complete without a visit to the Shey Palace, a former royal residence perched atop a hill.  Once a symbol of Ladakh's regal past, the Shey Palace offers a glimpse into the region's rich history and cultural heritage.

Upon reaching Leh, the rest of the evening is yours to unwind and recharge.  Stroll through the vibrant local market, savor a cup of traditional Tibetan tea at a cozy cafe, or simply relax at your hotel, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of your Ladakh adventure.  A delicious dinner will be served before a comfortable night's sleep, preparing you for your departure the next day.

Today, we trade our wheels for boots as we embark on a captivating hike to the charming village of Yangthang.  After breakfast, we'll take a scenic 1.5-hour drive to Likir, the starting point of our adventure.

Here, the trail unfolds, running parallel to a motorable road that ascends towards Phobe La, a mountain pass perched at 3,580 meters.  As we conquer this pass, the road gives way to a captivating descending track that leads us through a scenic gorge.  This path eventually brings us back to civilization, offering stunning views of the quaint village of Sumdo nestled below.

Our adventure continues as we leave the road once more, this time tackling the ascent towards Chagatse La, another pass standing at 3,630 meters.  A sturdy wooden bridge will help us cross a refreshing stream, and with each step, the charming village of Yangthang will come into closer view.

By the afternoon, we'll reach our destination, where a comfortable campsite awaits amidst the breathtaking scenery of Yangthang.  Imagine sipping hot tea with fellow adventurers, sharing stories of the day's hike while surrounded by the majestic Himalayan peaks.  A delicious dinner will be served under a canopy of stars, making this a truly unforgettable experience.  As darkness descends, you'll settle into your camp, ready for a restful night's sleep before exploring Yangthang's hidden gems tomorrow.

Today's adventure takes us on a scenic hike to the captivating village of Hemis Shukpachen.  The walk is relatively shorter compared to yesterday's trek, allowing you to savor the beauty of the landscape.  Our journey will lead us across Tsermangchan La, a mountain pass standing tall at 3,720 meters.  Conquering this pass will reward you with breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Hemis Shukpachen is a village steeped in rich cultural heritage, where myths and mysteries intertwine with daily life.  As you enter the village, you'll be greeted by a unique sight – a grove of juniper trees left undisturbed by the villagers.  Local superstitions endow these trees with a special significance, adding to the village's enigmatic charm.

Hemis Shukpachen offers a glimpse into an authentic Ladakhi way of life.  Here, you'll find traditional houses and even a couple of guesthouses and homestays, should you choose to immerse yourself in the village's atmosphere for a longer duration.  Spend some time interacting with the locals, learning about their customs and traditions, and soaking up the tranquility of this off-the-beaten-path destination.  This evening, enjoy a delicious meal prepared using fresh local ingredients, followed by a comfortable night's rest under the starlit sky.  Hemis Shukpachen promises an unforgettable experience, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for Ladakh's cultural tapestry.

Today's trek tackles Meptak La, a challenging pass perched at 3,980 meters. As you conquer this ascent, be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.  Reaching the other side, we'll arrive at the charming village of Ang.  Take a moment to soak in the local atmosphere and perhaps interact with some of the friendly villagers.

Our journey continues with a short walk from Ang to Tingmosgang, a relatively larger village compared to those we've encountered on previous days.  Here, you'll have the opportunity to experience Ladakhi village life on a larger scale, observing local traditions and perhaps even sampling some regional delicacies.  This evening, settle into comfortable accommodation in Tingmosgang, where a delicious dinner awaits. As you rest under a blanket of stars, reflect on the challenges and triumphs of today's trek, and eagerly anticipate what tomorrow's adventure holds.

Today's adventure offers a delightful contrast of landscapes. We'll embark on a trek towards the village of Tia, situated to the west.  The path is relatively easy, especially after crossing a bridge that leads us southwards.  As we conquer Bongbong La, a pass standing at 3,600 meters, be prepared to be mesmerized.

Here, the landscape transforms into the otherworldly Moonland.  Arid, barren slopes sculpted by wind and time create an uncanny resemblance to the lunar surface.  This awe-inspiring spectacle will leave you speechless, understanding why this region is so aptly named.

After capturing countless photos of this unique geological wonder, we'll take a short 30-minute walk to reach the road.  From here, we'll enjoy a scenic drive to the historic 11th-century Lamayuru Monastery.  Perched spectacularly on a mountainside, surrounded by dramatic peaks, this ancient monastery is a masterpiece of Buddhist architecture.  Explore its labyrinthine corridors, admire the exquisite murals, and soak in the spiritual atmosphere that pervades this sacred place.

Our journey concludes with a return to Leh, where you can unwind and reflect on the diverse experiences of the day.  From the lunar-like landscapes to the architectural marvel of Lamayuru Monastery, this day has been a captivating exploration of Ladakh's natural and cultural wonders.  A delicious dinner will be served at your hotel in Leh, followed by a comfortable night's sleep as you prepare for your departure tomorrow.
