Day 1

Excursion d'une journée à Katmandou.

Bouddhanath

The Bouddhanath Stupa is popular as one of the largest stupas on Earth and is located on the eastern borders of Kathmandu. The stupa was constructed in the 14th century on an octagonal base and is encircled by prayer wheels carved beautifully with Buddhists prayers. It also holds the ever-present Buddha eyes on all four sides of the stupas. Festooned with colorful prayer flags hung from the base to the top of the stupa, it makes the set beautiful. Observing monks, with a maroon outfit and shaven heads chanting mantras in the serene set will amaze anyone.

Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square is brimming with the oldest temples and old Palaces that reflect the by-gone era of monarchial rulings in the country. It is heavy with the feeling of nostalgia and reminiscences of days gone by. Built-in unique Pagoda style, the temples and Palaces are opulently decorated and lavishly carved with intricate designs. One of them was constructed in the 3rd century and will truly fascinate you. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace in the Square, built by King Pratap Malla, was used for royal ceremonies till 2001. We can also notice the abode of Kumari (Living Goddess). At the top of it, all is the most attractive beautiful carvings of erotic arts in the Bhagwati Temple, Shiva Parvathi Temple, the Saraswati temple and more.

Swayambhunath Stupa

Swayambhunath lies 3 km west of Kathmandu and is set on a hillock, bestowing from its location the views of Kathmandu Valley. It is the most popular and the holiest Buddhist stupas in Nepal and holds several other shrines. Embracing Hindu temples as well, the area of Swayambhunath Stupa is a mark of religious tolerance between Hindus and Buddhists. Also popular as ‘The Monkey Temple’, here you will see spinning prayer wheels and Buddha’s eyes on the four sides of stupas. The atmosphere at the stupa is serene and tranquil, bringing with it the coruscate offerings of peace.

Pashupatinath Temple

The Pashupatinath Temple, perched 5 km east of Kathmandu, is one of the holiest temples of Hindus all around the world and is devoted to Lord Shiva. The pagoda style temple holds golden roofs with silver doors and is set on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. The temple is filled with devotees on different occasions including the Maha Shivaratri festival to worship the stone Linga, a symbol of Lord Shiva. You can also observe the rituals of cremation of the Hindus at the bank of the river.
