Día 1

Viajar a Montecatini Terme

Flight to Florence, the largest city in Tuscany. The short drive north around Monte Albano takes you to your hotel in Montecatini Terme. Those arriving by train can travel directly to Montecatini Terme. (A)
We set off for San Piero a Grado. There is an 11th century church on the spot where St. Peter is said to have set foot on the Italian mainland. We then head into the most beautiful areas of Tuscany, the landscapes of cypresses and pines, vineyards and old Tuscan farms. First we reach the town of San Gimignano, which rises strikingly from the gently undulating landscape with its towers. The walk through the medieval streets leads us to the fortifications, from where a wide panoramic view opens up. Enjoy this picturesque place with a gelato or an espresso. In the afternoon, we leave San Gimignano and drive to a fattoria, where we enjoy wine, bruschetta and other delicacies. 245 km (F, I)
Today's excursion takes us by train to Florence, the stronghold of Tuscany. We take a walk through the old town and pass the church of Santa Maria Novella with its beautiful Renaissance façade. In the Basilica di San Lorenzo we visit the Medici tombs designed by Michelangelo. You will then have the opportunity to stroll through the market, which takes place every weekday at San Lorenzo. We arrive at the cathedral, impressively clad in white, green and red marble, in front of whose main portal stands the Romanesque baptistery with the so-called "Door of Paradise". In the afternoon, take the bus to Piazzale Michelangelo. From the terrace adorned with statues, we have a fantastic view of Florence. 100 km (F)
A day in Montecatini Terme that you can spend as you wish. You also have the option of taking a train excursion to Lucca with your tour guide. This ancient town is still completely surrounded by its ramparts and preserves a wealth of art treasures, churches and enchanting squares and streets. We visit the Piazza del Mercato, which was an arena in Roman times, and take a look at the outside of the churches of San Michele in Foro and San Frediano as well as the magnificent façade of the cathedral. You will have plenty of opportunity to set off on your own or hire a bike to ride around the city on the old city walls. If you would like a tip for the evening, we recommend taking the cable car to Montecatini Alto. Enjoy the view from there and a delicious dinner. 65 km (F)
Off we go by train to the city of the "Leaning Tower", Pisa. The Square of Miracles, Piazza dei Miracoli, is truly wonderful. The Cathedral and the Baptistery with the works of Pisano and the Leaning Tower await us here. Due to its yielding ground, the tower began to lean during construction. Today, however, it has been stabilized again and stands securely. According to legend, the Camposanto Monumentale, the sacred cemetery, was filled with earth from the Holy Land and, together with the cathedral and its tower, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We then experience the lively university town on a city walk before returning to Montecatini by train in the afternoon. The rest of the day is free for you to explore. 120 km (F)
Artistic highlights await us in Siena, probably the most beautiful city in Tuscany. With its characteristic tall brick palaces, the city has remained unchanged in its Gothic style. On our tour of the city, we visit the famous semi-circular Piazza del Campo with its marble fountain Fonte Gaia. There are numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city, including the imposing Gothic cathedral with its wonderful marble floor and multi-colored façade. By the way: Siena is known for its wonderful sweet specialties, the almond pastries taste great! 240 km (F)
Organize this day according to your own wishes. Or how about an optional excursion to Florence by train? After a short walk, we reach the train station in Montecatini Terme, from where we travel comfortably to Florence. We quickly reach Piazza della Signoria, a square that almost resembles an open-air museum. It is dominated by the façade of Palazzo Vecchio and the Loggia dei Lanzi, which is home to numerous famous sculptures. The large marble complex of the Fountain of Neptune and valuable bronze sculptures enrich the square, near which is also the entrance to the Uffizi Gallery, one of the largest and most important art collections in the world, which we will visit later. We then walk to the Ponte Vecchio, the oldest of the Arno bridges, where the city's goldsmiths sell their gleaming wares. Stroll through Florence at your leisure until we take the train to Montecatini together in the afternoon. 100 km (F)
Today it's time to say goodbye. On your return journey by train or plane, relive the memories of Etruscan buildings and Gothic cathedrals, green hills and lovely landscapes. If you have decided to take a follow-up vacation, we wish you lots of enjoyment in lovely Tuscany. (F) We expressly reserve the right to make changes to the timetable, flight schedule, hotel and program. (F=breakfast, I=snack, A=dinner)
