Fira is the island's picturesque capital perched on the top edge of the Caldera, 260m above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the island of Nea Kameni. Along the border of the caldera, you’ll come across the renowned villages of Oia - the whole town looks like a work of art as the houses are carved into the lava rock - Imerovigli and Firostefani, which are the best spots for you to get your sunset views.

Naxos’s most popular landmark lies on the neighbouring Palatia Islet; it is the marble gate of an unfinished ancient Greek temple dedicated to the God Apollo. Chora’s built landscape is marked by numerous fortified palaces, which date to the island’s Venetian Period, as Naxos was the seat of the Duchy of the Aegean. Make sure you visit the Bazaios Tower, off Sagri village, the Glezos-Crispi Tower in Chora, the Belonia Tower in Galanado and the Della Rocca-Barozzi Tower in Chora.

Among the white cube-shaped houses of the village, you will see neoclassical and mediaeval ruins of buildings. In the summer, the alleys of the old traditional village become lively with visitors strolling along and shopping or enjoying their meals in tavernas and restaurants. Make sure you visit the church of Panagia [Virgin Mary] Ekatontapyliani, take a trip to the Venetian Castle (13th c.), set on a hill at the centre of the traditional village, visit the Archaeological Museum and see the wide variety of exhibits from the island’s archaeological sites [the sanctuaries of Asklepios (Asclepius) and Pythios Apollo, Dilio etc.] and the remarkable prehistoric finds from the nearby islets of Antiparos, Despotiko and Saliago.
