Évora - Coimbra

On this day, the journey takes you around 260 km north to the historic university and former capital of Portugal. There is also plenty to discover along the way, so make a stopover every now and then, e.g. in the famous pilgrimage site of Fatima. For Portugal, it is the holy city and, after Lourdes, the most important Catholic Marian pilgrimage site, and the atmosphere is accordingly. Or in Tomar, where the mighty monastery castle "Castelo dos Templários e Convento de Cristo" towers above the city. Your overnight stay in Coimbra is picturesquely situated on the Rio Mondego and stretches up a steep hill in terraces. The shopping area is located in the lower "Baixa" district, while the university and the "Sé Velha" cathedral can be seen from afar on the old town hill. Coimbra - Porto

The "Venice" of Portugal, Aveiro, is an ideal stopover on the way to Porto. The lagoon city thrives on its proximity to the sea, with the colorfully painted "Moliceiros", Aveiro's fishing boats and landmarks, moored in the city's canals. You should not miss a visit to Costa Nova. This is certainly one of the most beautiful villages in the area, right on the coast, which is part of the Costa Prata (Silver Coast) region. Only here can you find the small wooden houses and villas in striped design. Situated on an elongated hillside, the facades of the houses are almost exclusively painted in a striped style in bright red, blue, green or yellow. Although it is certainly difficult to continue, today's destination is an experience in itself. Porto, the lively metropolis of the north and center of the port wine trade on the Douro, impresses with its magnificent cityscape and historic old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 2 nights in Porto. Day 7

Porto

Use the day to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city. The main axis of the center is the "Avenida dos Aliados", which looks like a huge square with the town hall and tower dominating the upper end. Also worth seeing in this part of the city is the azulejos (tiled) porch of the S. Bento train station. In the old university district to the west of the Avenida, there are some magnificent city palaces that bear witness to the wealth of the inhabitants. Porto is also home to the highest bell tower in the country, the Torre dos Clérigos, a baroque granite structure measuring an impressive 75 meters. Next to "Sé", the cathedral, which emerged from the origins of a Romanesque fortified church, stands the spacious Bishop's Palace, one of the most beautiful secular baroque buildings in Portugal. To the right of the palace, narrow alleyways and steps lead down to the Douro and the Ribeira district. Take the opportunity to take a trip on one of the many boats on the Douro. From the water, completely new views open up, e.g. of the "Ponte Dom Luis I". The two-storey steel bridge is probably the city's most famous structure, designed by a student of Gustav Eiffel. Among the numerous other sights, the "Bolsa" (stock exchange) stands out in particular, with its simple, cool façade on the outside and richly decorated interior - a masterpiece of stucco art. When you are exhausted from sightseeing, relax with a glass of port wine or a good meal - there is no shortage of either in Porto. (Breakfast).

Day 8

Porto - Braga

Braga, the third largest city in Portugal, has been a bishop's see since the 12th century and is still the religious center of the country today. There is a saying in Portugal that people work in Porto, study in Coimbra, live in Lisbon and pray in Braga. Now that you have visited these four cities, you are well placed to form an opinion. Worth a visit is "Bom Jesus", a much-visited pilgrimage mountain about 5 km to the south. Due to the old trees, the park is particularly beautiful for walks. The climb up the Way of the Cross is more strenuous but worthwhile. 500 steps lead to the baroque Igreja Bom Jesus. The zigzagging pairs of steps are decorated with wall fountains. Braga - Óbidos

A historic city wall surrounds the "Castelo" of the small town and allows a panoramic tour of the surrounding vineyards and windmills. Bright whitewashed houses decorated with blue and yellow flowers, winding alleyways and archways give Óbidos a uniquely romantic and historic atmosphere. It is probably one of the nicest and most atmospheric places in Portugal, straight out of a picture book. One night in Óbidos. If you have booked the charm option, you will spend 2 nights in Óbidos. Óbidos - Sintra
