Day 1

San José

Individual arrival at the airport in San José, reception and transfer to the hotel. An information meeting with the tour guide and handover of the travel documents will take place the same evening or the next morning, depending on arrival time. One night at the Hotel Presidente (upper middle class, national category: 4 stars). Approx. 15 km/0.5 hrs.

Day 2

San José - San Gerardo de Dota

After breakfast and picking up your rental car, you will have time for a short stroll through the city of San José. On the way to San Gerardo de Dota, you can make a detour to Irazú National Park with its 3,432 m high volcano. You then head up to Dota, located at Los Quetzales National Park. One night in the Lodge Sueños del Bosque (functional, national category: 2.5 stars). Approx. 95 km/2 hours (breakfast).

Day 3

San Gerardo de Dota - Las Cruces Biological Station

In the early morning, you have the opportunity to go on a hike in search of the quetzal. Continue over the "Cerro de la Muerte" before descending in serpentines to the small town of San Isidro, 2,800 m below. Continue into the romantic valley of the Río Grande de Térraba, the river with the most water in Costa Rica. Shortly after San Vito, a charming small town of Italian settlers who specialize in growing highland coffee, lies the Las Cruces Biological Station of the OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies). One night at the Las Cruces Biological Station (functional, national category: 2.5 stars). Approx. 190 km/4 hours (breakfast).

Day 4

Las Cruces Biological Station - La Gamba

In the morning, visit the botanical garden, which has tropical ornamental plants and one of the world's most extensive collections of palm trees. There is an observation tower for birdwatchers. Then continue to Golfito. After arrival in La Gamba, dinner. One night in the Esquinas Rainforest Lodge (functional, national category: 2.5 stars). Approx. 100 km/2 hours (breakfast, dinner).

Day 5

La Gamba - Playa Uvita

Behind La Gamba is the entrance to the Piedras Blancas National Park, one of the last rainforests on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. Continue to Palmar Sur. Here you can visit the centuries-old circular stone balls of the indigenous ancestors. Then continue along the coast to Playa Uvita. 2 nights at Hotel Cuna del Ángel (upper middle class, national category: 4 stars), for families with children at Villas Río Mar (middle class, national category: 3 stars). Approx. 120 km/2 hours (breakfast).

Day 6

Playa Uvita

Today you can take a boat tour (optional) from Sierpe to the largest mangrove forest in Latin America: the Térraba-Sierpe wetlands. The protected area between the deltas of two rivers is home to countless birds, crocodiles and turtles. (Breakfast).

Day 7

Playa Uvita - Manuel Antonio

Spend the morning at Playa Uvita beach in the Ballena Marine National Park. On an optional boat tour from December to April, you may be lucky enough to see impressive marine mammals such as humpback whales and dolphins in the wild. Continue to Manuel Antonio. One night at the Hotel Villas Lirio (middle class, national category: 3 stars). Approx. 75 km/1.5 hours (breakfast).

Day 8

Manuel Antonio - San José

Return to San José and drop off the rental car at the international airport or pick up at the separately booked city hotel in San José. Alternatively, you can also extend your stay in Manuel Antonio individually. Approx. 185 km (breakfast).
