Itinerary

This is a very different way of getting to know Guatemala, as it is not a traditional cultural trip, but, on the contrary, on this trip you will have hiking, nature, river adventures, bird watching, speleology, and archeology. Fourteen days of pure adventure like no one else in Guatemala.

Tour program

Day 1

Arrival in Guatemala City

Arrival Guatemala and transfer to Antigua Guatemala, to your hotel in Antigua Guatemala at the scheduled time.

Start point

Aeropuerto Internacional La Aurora (GUA), Finca San Isidro, Guatemala, Guatemala, Guatemala

Day 2

Pacaya volcano Hiking

Come and see the Pacaya Volcano: the most active volcano in Guatemala at 2,500 meters (more than 8,000 feet). Witness spectacular views of the lagoon of Calderas and three other volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. The surrounding area is an experience unto itself, composed in large part of humid forest and rocks.

After a walk through volcanic sand paths, with great views of the volcanoes and unique vegetation, you´ll arrive at the plateau where you can see the main crater of the volcano. Today, you can't visit the crater of the volcano for security reasons, but you will see the lava (if active) and some steam baths created by the heat of the Pacaya Volcano.

At the volcano, you'll have the opportunity to get an up-close look at the volcano. After a thrilling day of exploration and dramatic views, you will arrive back at your hotel in Antigua Guatemala. Afternoon free for your own walk or walking with your tour guide.

Day 3

Antigua - Ram Tzul, Baja Verapaz

This trip from Antigua can take about 4 hours and 30 minutes, traveling between the mineral-producing mountain ranges used in Guatemala.

Ram Tzul is a Private Natural Reserve and Eco-Hotel (https://goo.gl/maps/bZoweuuKUBNrfffE6) that was born, more than two decades ago, from the desire to have a place of rest and communication with my family. I was managing a tourist property in the Biotopo area and fell in love with the place. One day walking through the virgin mountain forests with my son Gerardo Abel, founder of the reserve, we discovered a beautiful hidden waterfall, protected by its difficult access and enriched by a magical legend. It immediately captivated our spirit and heart and we identified with it. We decided to preserve the majesty of that beautiful place, share nature and protect the life that flowed there among forests, orchids, flora and fauna to turn it into "A SANCTUARY DEDICATED TO THE UNIVERSE, NATURE AND MAN". With this idea in mind, I looked for a way to acquire this property inherited from family to family for more than 150 years, without an access road and without being known by the local people. Talking with the owner, he told us: "Legend has it that in this place lives "RAM TZUL" - the spirit of the mountain. For us Ketchi, he is the God who protects nature and life. This is a magical place that envelops its visitors with its breeze of peace and plenitude. The breeze of the Rubel Chaim waterfall (rain of stars), is spread by the daughter of Ram Tzul, Princess "Raxcoj" (rainbow) who lives in the high pool of the waterfall and on full moon nights becomes "Kanti Lemtzuunk", the silver snake with crystal horns that spreads life in the forest. After a brief pause the owner added: tradition says that one day a person would arrive who would watch over the conservation of this place and its four waterfalls, forests, flora and fauna, reveal its existence and share it with all nature lovers..... And so I acquired that mountain and we named it RAM TZUL- spirit of the mountain-. Some time later the Quetzal Biotope closed to the public and the tourist property I managed needed a new attraction. We made a trail to the Rubel Chaim Waterfall and it was a success. Later, visitors returning from the waterfall suggested that because of the isolation of the place, they should at least have something to drink and a roof to rest under. We decided to make a rustic roof. Friends from the South Coast sent me large bamboo poles 40 meters high, the Taiwan Mission sent technicians and my son Gerardo designed the project. An artistic and unique bamboo structure was raised and became the Restaurant, then little by little the rooms were made and from the desire of a place to share with my family a beautiful Natural Reserve and an Eco-hotel named Ram Tzul - spirit of the mountain - A SANCTUARY DEDICATED TO THE UNIVERSE, NATURE AND MAN.

Day 4

Ram Tzul - Coban - Lanquín

Today they will leave Salamá for the department of Alta Verapaz, specifically Cobán, where they will make a visit according to their requirements. In the afternoon, departure to Lanquín, directly to your hotel.

Day 5

Rafting in Cahabon river

Today you will enjoy the site and rafting on the Acahabon River. In the afternoon, return to your hotel in Lanquín. (https://goo.gl/maps/Ndb9cZAYRzXmfPYq8)

Río Cahabón offers the best opportunity for whitewater rafting in Guatemala. The river rapids cover a variety of difficulty levels, ranging from class I to IV – all but the most difficult rapids. Much of this 7.5-mile (12 km) route has class III and IV rapids.

If you visit during the rainy season (from June to February), you’ll get to experience the rapids at their best, gushing with recent rainfalls. But you can enjoy rafting the Cahabón at any time of year. This tour will provide you with rafting equipment, and the guide will give an overview of safety information before you get in the water.

As you speed past the banks of the river, you’ll get to see some of the area’s wildlife. Keep an eye out for Guatemala’s tropical species. Iguanas and toucans are common sights.

Please note: Everyone who takes this tour must know how to swim. No one younger than 12 is allowed to go rafting.

According to the researchers in charge of the investigation of the archaeological site, the site was inhabited in 500 BC and reached its maximum splendor during the late classic period. Its location near the San Pedro Mártir River made it the central trade route for transporting products of great importance such as cacao and cotton textiles. The kings of Waka are among the oldest dynastic lines in the Classic Maya world.
