Itinerary
The trek to Siklis, the largest Gurung village in Nepal (with Ghandruk being the second largest), offers a picturesque journey through a rarely visited valley. Situated at an elevation of 1,980 m (6,496 ft) to the northeast of Pokhara, Siklis lies in the shadow of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. This trek provides a unique glimpse into traditional Gurung culture, lifestyle, and handicrafts.
As we traverse forests, cross rivers, and camp near small hamlets, the Annapurnas remain a constant backdrop. Unlike the more popular trails, this traditional Gurung village offers a genuine cultural experience, where your visit is as revered as that of a visiting deity. The route from Ghalegaun to Siklis is known as the ecological trek and is managed by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP).
Historically, Siklis is significant as one of the major origins of the Gurung community. Here, you can witness various ritual practices, including the roles of Jhankri (shaman) and Lama (priest), who are central to marriage, death, and daily life. Traditional skills such as alcohol fermentation, weaving clothes and sacks from wild nettle, creating bamboo products, and using traditional water mills and stone grinders are key features of Siklis.
The region is also a haven for birdwatching, with opportunities to spot Nepal’s raptors, including the Lammergeyer with its impressive 9-foot wingspan. The rich flora and fauna, especially the diverse bird species and butterflies, combined with stunning mountain views, make this trek a captivating experience.
Important Note
Your safety is of paramount importance to us at the Alpine Club of Himalaya. We have the absolute authority to cancel the trip or change the itinerary, when deemed necessary or when we have reason to believe your safety is at stake. In these extreme situations, we kindly request that you offer your full co-operation to the trusted leader of the group appointed by the Alpine Club of Himalaya. However, we assure you that we will make every effort to keep to the above itinerary.
For this trek we take a route – POKHARA-BHURJUNG-GHALEGAUN-TARATOP-PARJE-SIKLIS-LAMAKHET-KALIKASTHAN-BEGNAS LAKE-POKHARA.
