Caminha | A medieval town, where history flourishes amidst stunning natural beauty

Begin your journey in Caminha, a peaceful riverside town at the mouth of the Minho River, where the sea, mountains, and nature come together in beautiful harmony. Steeped in history, this town invites you to slow down and enjoy a leisurely stroll through its Gothic and Renaissance houses. Behold the main square, featuring the impressive 1551 Renaissance fountain. Explore medieval fortifications and pre-Roman archaeological sites in the town centre. The protected marshes along the Coura River offer fantastic birdwatching, and you can even sip a drink on a relaxing river trip with local fishermen. Don't miss the weekly market, where you can find handcrafted goods from local artisans. End your visit with a peaceful walk along Moledo Beach for a truly enriching experience.

Stage 1 - 17 km/10 mi

Continuing along the Minho River, you will arrive at Vila Nova de Cerveira, famed for its vibrant artistic scene. This charming town, near the Spanish border, is known as the ‘Village of the Arts,’ home to numerous sculptures and the renowned Art Biennale, transforming the town into an open-air gallery. Head inland to explore the medieval castle, where you can trace the region's history while enjoying breathtaking views of the river and lush landscapes. Delve into the narrow streets, where tradition and history unfold, and unwind in the warmth of the local hospitality. Vila Nova de Cerveira offers a perfect mix of nature and culture, making it a must-visit for art lovers.

Stage 2 - 19 km/12 mi

Your walk to Tui will pass through Valença, a historic Portuguese town near the Spanish border. Known for its 17th and 18th-century fortress, Valença features narrow streets, craft shops, and cozy cafés, making it a perfect stop before heading into Spain. Upon reaching Tui, immerse yourself in the city's medieval heritage. Its cobbled streets, elegant homes, and ancient churches reflect its importance as a strategic and religious hub. The Cathedral of Santa Maria, a striking Romanesque-Gothic fortress, dominates the skyline and offers peaceful views of the river and Valença. 

Stage 3 - 33 km/20 mi

Picture yourself walking through O Porriño, a town known for its industrial heritage and high-quality granite. The town’s granite architecture, including the Casa del Concello designed by Antonio Palacios, stands out as a key feature. Venture inland to Redondela, a charming town in Pontevedra, nestled between the River Verdugo and the Ría de Vigo. The town center, with its cobbled streets and historic buildings, exudes authenticity and character. Redondela is renowned for its epic festivals, which celebrate the local culture and the warmth of its people.  

Stage 4 - 20 km/12 mi

On the way to Pontevedra, you'll pass through peaceful countryside and eucalyptus forests, with small villages and stone crosses that evoke the spirituality of the journey. Situated in the heart of Galicia, Pontevedra, also known as 'Boa Vila' (the good city) for its welcoming atmosphere, is renowned for its beautifully preserved historic centre. Be sure to visit landmarks such as the Gothic cathedral of Santa María a Maior and the iconic Burgo Bridge, which showcase the city's architectural beauty. Visit the farmers' market to sample local cheeses and immerse yourself in its culinary traditions. Don't miss pulpo a la gallega, Galicia's iconic octopus’ dish, seasoned with paprika, olive oil and sea salt and often served on a wooden plate. This delicacy reflects Galicia's maritime heritage and is the perfect accompaniment to Albariño wine. 

Stage 5 - 21 km/13 mi

Following the River Lérez, you’ll soon arrive at Caldas de Reis, a charming town on the River Umia, renowned for its thermal waters and ancient Roman baths, making it an ideal place to unwind and rejuvenate. The town’s stone houses, charming squares, and peaceful parks showcase the traditional essence of Galicia. As a key stop on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago, it draws pilgrims in search of calm and reflection. With its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, Caldas de Reis offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and warm hospitality. 

Stage 6 - 19 km/12 mi

As you draw closer to Padrón, a historic Galician town on the banks of the River Sar, you'll be immersed in its rich cultural heritage and its importance on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago. Known as the birthplace of the poet Rosalía de Castro, Padrón's tranquil streets are lined with monumental sites, including the Church of Santiago and the iconic Base of the Apostle, which mark its importance as a pilgrimage stop. Don't miss the opportunity to sample the town's renowned gastronomy, especially the famous 'pimento de Padrón'. While in Padrón, be sure to visit the Fonte do Carme, near the Church of Santa María do Carme, where you can take a break, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and drink from the refreshing waters.

Stage 7 - 25 km/15 mi

The final stretch of your walk is sure to be a thrill as you approach Santiago de Compostela. As you near this medieval sanctuary of St James, you'll experience the same excitement that pilgrims have felt for centuries. Santiago is undoubtedly one of the holiest cities in Christianity and attracts countless travellers from all over the world. On arrival, be sure to visit the Cathedral - a place steeped in history, faith and inspiration that marks the culmination of your incredible journey. It has been a long journey, but it is worth every second!­
