Tour program

Day 1

San José

Arrival at the airport, welcome by a representative of our agency and transfer to the hotel. One night at the Hotel Balmoral (upper middle class, national category: 4 stars). Approx. 17 km.

Day 2

San José - Turrialba

Early morning drive to the 3,432 m high Irazú, the highest volcano in the country, and short hike to the craters. Then stop at the Basilica of Cartago, whose Byzantine-influenced architecture with warm wood tones creates a very special atmosphere. After lunch, enjoy the thermal springs in the picturesque valley of Orosi. You then continue through coffee and sugar cane plantations to Turrialba. One night at the Hotel Villa Florencia (middle class, national category: 4 stars). Approx. 120 km (breakfast, lunch).

Day 3

Turrialba - Tortuguero

Early morning drive over a magnificent mountain range to Guápiles, where you change buses. Continue past extensive banana plantations to the boat landing stage. Drive through the canal network, one of the most exotic jungle areas in Costa Rica. After lunch, visit the village of Tortuguero and the small information center about the "green turtle". One night in the Evergreen Lodge (middle class, national category: 3 stars). Approx. 70 km (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Day 4

Tortuguero -Sarapiquí

At sunrise, take a leisurely boat trip through the small canals of the national park. On the way through swampy palm groves, canals and lagoons, you will have the opportunity to spot monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, turtles, river otters and sloths. After breakfast, return by boat to the landing stage and continue by bus to Sarapiquí. Lunch in Guápiles on the way. One night in the Tirimbina Lodge (functional, national category: 2 stars). Approx. 100 km (breakfast, lunch).

Day 5

Sarapiquí - La Fortuna/Volcano Arenal

In the morning, a two-hour riding tour on well-maintained paths around the Hacienda Pozo Azul. Alternatively, you can take part in a hiking tour. In the afternoon, drive through the fertile plain of the north to La Fortuna. The most important crops are pineapple, papaya, yuca and citrus fruits. 2 nights in the Hotel Campo Verde (middle class). Approx. 110 km (breakfast).

Day 6

La Fortuna/Volcano Arenal

After breakfast, drive to a traditional farm and get to know Costa Rican rural life. Lunch on the farm. The afternoon is at your leisure at the foot of the Arenal. The volcano has a classic cone shape and is one of the most beautiful volcanoes in Costa Rica. (Breakfast, lunch).

Day 7

La Fortuna/Volcano Arenal

After breakfast, end of the trip or transfer to your connecting hotel (some for a fee). If you have booked the round trip "Cloud Forest & Red Macaws" or "A flying visit to Nicaragua" directly afterwards, you will travel directly to Manuel Antonio or Liberia today (please only book this combination in the module). Approx. 230 km (breakfast).
